5:04 am
a cruise ship that was stranded at sea with coded 1000 patients on board has been allowed to dock in florida the dam had been turned away by south american countries russia has sent a plane load of facemasks and other medical supplies to the u.s. after president donald trump accepted an offer of aid from moscow and here in germany more than 1000 people have now died there are nearly 880000 confirmed cases . well one of those people who has had coronavirus and recovered from it is my colleague here at sam balls sam we are so glad to have you back in the studio you're looking well but how are you feeling feeling much better it was obviously pretty sick for a bit. perfectly know back to health so what kind of symptoms were you showing that led you to believe that you might have the virus is about 3 weeks ago and had a fever i just it wasn't too bad and i measured my temperature was about 38 degrees it's pretty convinced i had it then you know current of our sneeze going around.
5:05 am
the fever and lots of aches and. a normal flu at that stage but the thing that sort of made me convinced that i had cried a virus was i had nothing in the nose no runny nose or anything like that every time i've had the flu it's always sort of had something to do with. this is probably a virus. and then after that the thing that really convinced of it was the nausea people talk about this before i couldn't ate and sleeping was even difficult to see groggy would wake up in the not and you know where i was pretty convinced credit. test how easy was it to get that test here in germany as a lot of people can probably agree with me it's pretty difficult. had the symptoms . get a test so i went down to one of the 6 official testing places and. got there and
5:06 am
how early what about 6 hours in line before i finally got to see a doctor and i was really systematic that stage fever really so really tired really nor was. it started to come and the doctor said you know they were going to test me because i just had a script strict criteria see they had to be direct contact so when you do. or you had to have been to a red zone to compare from italy or china basically said i didn't make those 2 because i didn't know where i got it from. the test. was pretty despondent and you know you can imagine you've been standing in line. pretty sad coughing sputtering everywhere. to get the tests it was really lucky a sort of fortune really i went to the doctors the next day with a girlfriend who was also probably getting the kind of hours that stage and general practice just offered he said he had
5:07 am
a few tests going around it is practice and he just offered a test as pretty much and we had the results in the next 24 hours and went to the test itself actually like is it a swab. how they go about doing the test i was not expecting it. he pulled it out and you know just a little cotton swab and just come in the mouth a little gentle pocono's or something you know you look up and he shoves it up you know until it comes back down your throat but solid as well as quite uncomfortable but it was all over within a matter of seconds you know let's head up shoved in the foot and shoot and it was blood for a few days after the. call. 6 hours later did you say 24 hours later you got a call saying that you tested positive as positive and so what advice could you offer to somebody who right now feels they might have symptoms that could potentially be coronavirus what would you say to somebody about what they should do
5:08 am
in terms of next steps i was pretty lucky because i had such a mild case i really was i mean really sick for 2 days the other days i was sort of ok but 2 days i was bedridden so my advice would be like to become and not freak out in the early stages because you're probably going to be ok. and seek the medical attention that you need it was quite easy to get medical attention when you needed it and the german health authorities were in constant contact with you. you know sometimes things are those of the social in what around friends when i was definitely infectious and we were you know shaking. and. contract and. on sam it's wonderful to have you back in the studio thank you so much for sharing your experience and us thank you. well around the worlds of the coronavirus is heading both rich and poor but the knock on effects of quarantines and lockdowns are impacting some more than others let's take a look at how the crisis is affecting life for the most vulnerable. in

found chat groups to keep each other informed about the availability of grocery and other important things in the selectee and generally people are stressed and wired about their jobs and careers because the economic slowdown that has happened after the lockdown has triggered inciting about this future. deserted streets empty restaurants closed shops in the u.s. capitol to stop the spread of the virus more and more states are ordering their residents to stay at home but not everyone complies if you days ago police in neighboring maryland interrupted a church service where 50 people gather it's and none of them were social distancing the oh so it is can only help that such attitudes will change soon as people understand what's at stake it seems the nice weather makes it even harder to follow the rules i myself often go jogging here at the river rhine and each time i notice that barely anyone keeps enough distance from others. sometimes i even see

larger gatherings even the police doesn't seem to be a deterrent. in israel people have been asked to rear face masks or any type of fabric or scarf when going outside it besides the very about the coronavirus people start to vary as well about their financial situation with more people losing their jobs at least temporarily and unemployment figures up from 4 to over 20 percent. since the beginning of the crisis staying at home is challenging for everybody these days but now imagine if you live in the shack in the one room with a lot of people at a very crowded space this is the reality for millions of south africans and although the lockdown rules of the 3 we've looked at extremely strict many people simply not able to comply. people in the u.k. have joined in a nationwide a round of applause for medical and other front line workers battling the virus.

a premeditated event. platforms like facebook are rife breeding grounds for the spread of fake news the social networking giant is among several companies pledging to take stronger action to prevent the spread of misinformation others too are doing their bit to make sure people are getting the right information about corona a service called africa check recently to rebuff a south african claim that a vaccine against corona virus that being developed. much of asia seems just over the hill and most of europe is in the battle against africa is bracing for impact fake news is not helping society is there to prepare for the onslaught let's bring in vincent from. kenya africa check and joins us from nairobi vincent how much of a problem is corona fake news in african countries right now.
5:20 am
thanks for having me kora virus misinformation is a big big problem and the reason is that the more people believe misinformation then they will not follow their instructions are going to wash their hands only practice social distancing and they will not stay at home so these things mean that if they don't pay attention wires threats more and on top of that you have people throwing certification or is or medicines that have been proven not to work we've seen in nigeria for example that people have been poisoned by chloroquine because they heard it could work for them and so what's the weirdest piece of fake news you've come across so far. although we're just i have come across is that if you take some orange peels and you boil and you inhale the steam
5:21 am
you're going to cure coronavirus and we know that's not sure because your body temperature internal body temperature never really changes all you end up doing is burning. why on earth are people actually believing this kind of stuff while people believe misinformation particularly about health because it's tied into the spirit people are of breed of diseases that are difficult to cure and so this gives them hope when you give them a little hope they will try and secure as they will i am medicines fake medicines if they have to. you should know just that really we don't see a lot of fake news about a disease like malaria because we all know it's curable medicine is clearly accessible. to people across africa generally trust the governments to take the right measures of false starts misinformation on fertile ground.
5:22 am
people are are burra less trustful of the government and the reason they are is because they know who the government really can do them most to protect what we have seen is a bit of dissatisfaction with the measures the time being taken so for example in kenya we knew that for example the number of tests have been rising but these are concerned that they are not enough and also the fact that a lot of people live in an informal economy in kenya so they have to go out every day and earn money and it's very difficult to tell people like that to stay at home and so why so late unless you're providing them with money so that they can stay inside. who benefits from these fake news
5:23 am
a lot of people benefit there are people who wants to group their insurance online and those credit anything about his fate whether it's about coronavirus or politics it doesn't matter then there are people who want to actually make a business selling fake cures so that you can actually spend your money to buy a fake urine or to do things that are not true for example or in shapiro water and then finally you've got people who want. to drive political agendas they're going to capitalize on people's fears to spread stories and that way they spread the agenda that's probably the system it's wrong and therefore you should form because i have a solution so there are people during its digitally on line to have. to come logical results others have commercial reasons and some have all the degrees and

5:25 am
found in bats that don't cause disease in humans and of course and evil scientists trying to build a superbug would have started with one that's already been proven to make a sick 2nd in our computer models the changes to the stars code to genetic sequence that allowed it to start infecting us just don't look like they should work very well they aren't mutations that any bio engineer would have chosen if they were trying to build a super bug because the models would have said they don't really work so no the coronavirus was not designed by humans. can supplements like fish oil zinc over to men's health. supplements or an area of nutrition where there's very little consensus in the scientific community under ordinary circumstances much less in the midst of a pandemic the idea that you can somehow boost your immune system i mean what does that mean anyway the answer to this question is a resounding no the only thing that we currently think will prevent you from
5:26 am
catching the virus is if you've had it already and developed antibodies that will prevent you from getting it again i'm not saying. you should stop taking your fish oil or your vitamins just don't expect them to keep you from catching covert 19 negatives. there is agreement that notes of smell is a sign of a severe case of page 19 can we hear more about that it's. recent large scale study in britain that collected data from hundreds of thousands of people reporting on an up showed that from those who eventually tested positive for the disease around 60 percent had that some time to a greater or lesser extent that certainly sounds pretty convincing the only problem is that losing the sense of smell or taste is also closely associated with other respiratory infections it's a lot more common than you might think that's why as of this morning at least the
5:27 am
w.h.o. was still reviewing the issue and hadn't yet decided to add the loss of smell or taste to the official list of symptoms of corona virus infection but that could very well how been in the coming days if there's enough evidence to support it. there we go there from science department answering your most pressing questions and that concludes our 19 special forces day for more on the pandemic do check out our social media channels and our website that's w dot com which has dedicated covert 900 pages in 30 languages now before i let you go let's go back to africa where musicians are fighting against the coronavirus together with local health authorities the foremost across the continent i guess in vital messages across to the public in songs they sing about
