8:01 pm

cuomo has ordered the machines to be redistributed to overwhelmed hospitals. with many overcrowded this convention center in manhattan has now been turned into a makeshift hospital. funeral homes and crematoriums in the country's most populous city are also struggling to cope. 911 was really good but it wasn't like. a lot of the. were around back then and. even comparable to what we're getting now death in isolation for victims and their families there are no last words no goodbyes only pictures of their loved ones from those on the front lines meanwhile u.s. officials have done a u.-turn on their face mask guidelines after initially stating they aren't necessary for the general public the center for disease control is now recommending
8:03 pm
face coverings such as bandanas and homemade masks though the president has stressed they are not mandatory. well i just over were myself it's a recommendation they recommend. i'm feeling good i just don't want to be doing i don't know somehow sitting in the oval office behind that beautiful resolute desk the great resolute desk i think wearing a face mask as a great presidents prime ministers dictators kings queens. i don't see it for myself the mixed messages have left many in the u.s. confused and frustrated. and a u.s. navy captain has received a hero's farewell after he was dismissed from his post for criticizing the ivies handling of the pandemic captain brett crozier was chaired by his crew as can be saying in these final video is the come on
8:04 pm
a has been had been battling an outbreak of the virus on his ship and demanded that he be allowed to evacuate his soldiers from the us s. theodore roosevelt so far more than 150 people have tested positive for the virus the navy dismissed him for not following proper protocol and allegedly causing panic by letting his complaint to link it to the media. report i'm in s.f. has been following the story and is here to talk it through with us i mean what's been the reaction to captain dismissal frankly his crew seems heartbroken that he's been dismissed he had become something of a legend among his crew members for standing up for them now there are currently over 150 confirmed cases of coven 1000 on that ship so people are getting worried and you can see that in the way that they support him here's a tweet from somebody on the ships that i will cherish the moment for the rest of my life he was a great commanding officer here's a person who she is
8:05 pm
a wife of somebody who's on the ship and said that she wants to thank him for saving her husband's life so these are life and death turns there and he was seen as somewhat of a hero you also. politicians coming out in support of him like bernie sanders and joe biden and the navy has actually started to evacuate the ship which is what he had called for so they evacuated $1500.00 people so it seems like they've also taken him seriously wow so is this a done deal or if they're going to likely to be political fallout from this well the navy seems to be sticking by its position even though it's complying with what he asked for they're standing by the position of dismissing him because they said that he broke protocol in copying people into an unsecured e-mail which allowed the e-mail to be leaked to the media not because he had complained would be the way he had complained and several u.s. senators all of them democrats have called for an investigation into his firing so i think we're going to see this story for a little while longer. and there's also another ship actually
8:06 pm
a navy ship that's part of the controversy over the coronavirus in the tribe in mr ations handling of that there's a ship docked in the new york harbor right now called the un us and s. comfort it's a navy hospital ship and it's designed to take 1000 patients but it only has a few dozen and that's because the military protocol again because they are not allowing coronavirus patients on to this ship which might sound kind of absurd but they said that they want to help hospitals relieve hospitals of other patients but they also sent hospitals a list of 49 other medical conditions that would disallow them from coming on the ship ambulances aren't allowed to take people directly to the ship they have to go to hospital 1st and get try and get a test for the coronavirus before they come on the ship so currently sitting there with only about 20 to 30 patients on board so people are seeing this as another failure of the military to adapt to the current crisis now trump as commander in chief could step in and do something about that but people are saying that he has
8:07 pm
been certainly wouldn't want to be a patient on a ship that was getting about of khurana. i mean i said thanks so much for looking into this story for us. now let's take a look at some other covert 19 related stories italy has reported its 1st drop in intensive care patients since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic currently around 4000 people aren't intensive care there however officials warn the country will continue its lockdown for at least another month. after a month at sea the coral princess cruise ship has been allowed to dock in my ammi several latin american countries refused to ship safe harbor after an outbreak of corona virus which killed 2 and sickened many more. china has held a nationwide 3 minute reflection to all of the victims of the corona virus outbreak chinese president xi jinping was among the mourners air raid sirens wailed and
8:08 pm
flags were at half mast the virus has killed over 3000 people in china. more than a 1000000 people globally have mounted positive for the corona virus but the actual number of cases is thought to be much higher with many of those afflicted not even aware they're infected now researchers here in germany and joining the international effort to understand the full extent of the coronavirus pandemic there carrying out new tests that aim to find those who may have already had the infection and could now be immune. this machine could bring relief from isolation for some here at the isa our clinic in munich doctors can not only test for the corona virus they can also see if patients unknowingly contract to the virus in the past more than 100 samples can be processed in an hour this is how it works the sample vials are coated with building blocks from the viruses surface if
8:09 pm
antibodies are detected in the patients of blood they will attach to the blocks the virus can then be the texted with a different antibody that carries a dye and changes the sample color it positive. in addition to patients the new machine will also allow health care workers to be tested. on but not till it isn't this test will of course be offered to personnel working in infected areas which will allow us to know who has already have the virus and has built up immunity to how to i mean one far it's thought the antibodies could provide immunity for years to come for those with antibodies that could mean a return to normal life it's hoped that people who work in other sectors could soon be tested by the general practitioner. and he body tests have already been approved in the u.s. and to tell us more about it i'm now joined by dr andrea final from the health finance institute from harvard university and if thanks for joining me tell us why
8:10 pm
are these tests so important thanks so much for having me on this test very important because to provide a conclusive information not only whether chris is infected but also whether this person has developed immunity against this infected so this can be used for 2 purposes really joel out those that have immunity to react or society which has others have said could actually jump start the economy again but also for congress and has not a nation to those who are infected so the site. is going to ask you how extensive the new testing is likely to be who is going to be able to access it will be tested. it really depends on how fast this test can be rolled out as i understand there is some test still going on for $100.00 are studies 400000 persons in germany right now and it's probably going to be a couple of months until we really know how well these tests are working in terms
8:11 pm
of how the big positive predictive value is of these tests and also how long this immunity lasts is one thing to detect infinity it's another thing to have lasting immunity so it's still in there in an early study face so we will probably watch this very closely over the coming months how accurate is this test to go are these tests. i think are still too early to tell we will probably know after having studied as significant amount of persons i know as i mentioned 100000 people are involved in germany right now and a positive critical value i need i would need to in the coming weeks we can probably determine that. how how can these antibodies can they help patients who've tested positive for the virus. it can actually be so it's called convalescent plasma so and that's been shown in some clinical settings to actually be effective as a treatment so basically other nations to of those that have antibodies can be
8:12 pm
used to treat those who have the disease. to and if i go from harvard university thank you very much thank you so much. around the world daily life has ground to a halt to the government's attempt to protect their citizens from the worst of the pandemic and germany is no different restrictions on economic life and social distancing guidelines have been in place for weeks but now some academics say it's time to start a conversation about lifting the lockdown. germany is at a standstill but the coronavirus shutdown can't last forever some academics are now advocating for a controlled exit strategy not really in the end we have to allow infections to happen because only immunity in the population can protect us against a greater outbreak. we can't wait for a vaccine that will take too much time we can't extend the shutdown for so long we
8:13 pm
have to build up our herd immunity step by step. herd immunity is one about 70 percent of the population has been infected and develops immunity to a virus reducing the chance of transmission the academics say this could be achieved by slowly removing some of the core in teen measures they say kindergartens in schools could be reopened 1st as young people are a low risk group. of children and young adults are likely to come in contact with the virus eventually so it's probably more sensible that they should be the 1st to deal with the virus and thereby protect the elderly and endangered. that the same time safety measures must be increased in nursing homes and among care workers with the goal of better protecting at risk individuals but the outcome is unknown and. it's still very hard to predict whether the protective measures which can be eased will result in a situation which our health care system can handle and many more lives could be
8:14 pm
lost if the outbreak gets out of control the academics calling for a gradual exit strategy say it's up to politicians to make hard plans and hard choices. now let's look at some of the other stories making news this hour britain's main opposition labor party has named kier stahmann as its new laeta the shadow breaks it secretary was one of 3 candidates for the labor leadership and one with more than 50 percent of the voters still replace jeremy coleman who resigned after december's general election to prisons. in southeastern france 2 people have been killed in a knife attack on residents venturing out to shop in a town under lockdown several others were injured the alleged attacker was arrested by police nearby. you're watching data 1000000000 years don't forget you can find extensive coverage of the coronavirus as well as other news on our website that's day
