a german company has announced it's received approval to start clinical trials. and a video that's won the hearts of tennis fans it shows the dedication of 2 italian girls who are managing to keep playing while maintaining their social distancing they get help from below when the shots fall short. i'm serious oh my god it's good to have you with us the u.n. world food program is sounding the alarm over food shortages caused by cold at 19 the head of the world food program david beasley says more than 800000000 people already do not have enough to eat but that number is likely to soar by our 135000000 by the end of the year because of the coronavirus pandemic he says the crisis should take could take on the biblical proportions if the world fails to act . ah promise in south sudan trying to ward off that
12:02 pm
latest invasion no chris south threatening to destroy what crops they have left in a country where hunger always talks of davy life after years of civil war the majority of south sudanese are already in a state of food crisis now things look set to get even worse last year we had to feed 5000000 people due to fighting and flooding already in 2020 we've had locust invasions and now there is a covert 19 pandemic which we predict could almost double the people in acute hunger by the end of 2020 across the world. and those numbers are shocking we're also told the rate of hunger endemic in addition rule of 130000000 people. could be pushed to the breaking storage by the end of 2020 that's a total of $265000000.00 people. government lockdowns are taking
12:03 pm
that toll in brazil it's estimated that up to 40000000 informal one appears have been dragged into extreme poverty handouts here in rio de janeiro are keeping people fed. others are doing whatever they can to survive. that might be defeated me honestly it's very difficult and we're selling food in order to survive but my daughter annoying me we're out of work and we're doing this selling food and then i can see. organizations like the un's world food program are pleading for more funds but with so many countries now battling for economic survival plus a lack of global leadership the fear is that a humanitarian catastrophe could be closer than ever if. we can
12:04 pm
speak now to bettina alicia she is the world food program's chief spokesperson here in germany thank you for joining us the numbers are staggering we're seeing the number of people in acute hunger could double by the end of the year something jorgen ization is calling a perfect storm why is this. it's because so many things are coming together i mean the world food program and this year will feed 100000000 people in over 80 countries but that was because of war conflict of climate change now on top of that we have another crisis the covert crisis the corona crisis and what we're seeing is that people out of work in many places their governments are scrambling how to take care of their people their economies are collapsing so we are extremely concerned that our usual work of feeding those 100000000 people will not be happening because we will not get the money that's our big concern we have
12:05 pm
people tell the world let's avoid this crisis give us the money so we can take care of these people and their cover crisis is really making everything much much more extreme and we see it around the globe what is happening but our big concern of course does super hungry people people who are very close to starvation who are now much more impacted then ever before your report also talks about displaced people in countries like afghanistan iraq and bangladesh especially at risk which communities in these countries are you most worried about. most worried about refugee camps for example where people die in very very close contact that's a lot in african countries but it's also in a place like bangladesh where they're working and have fled to we are worried about how we can practice social distancing how should that work and will we have taking
12:06 pm
measures we're making sure that there's bigger distance between the various people when they pick up our food but the important thing is this we need to act now what the world food program is doing now is we're pre-positioning food for the next 3 months in the hardest hit countries so we can feed those people and then of course we also help the whole you and response to the coronavirus disease you said you worry that you might not get the money you need and as we know economies around the world are struggling so what is your message to governments about why it's important to help here. you have to do this now now this week the next week the week after that we need to help us so we can help the whole humanitarian community we need $350000000.00 so good to keep on sending planes to keep on sending nurses to keep on sending doctors to building field hospitals for aid workers to keep foden and other aid supplies going we are helping
12:07 pm
we have shipped millions of masks and protective gear to some. 70 countries we're going to help 120 countries help with this disease and how to cope with it but the government leaders have to act now. the world food program's chief spokesperson here in germany thank you so much for joining us thank you. there may still be no cure for the corona virus but the search for a vaccine is gaining momentum in some breaking news the 1st clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine has just been given the green light here in germany the vaccine is being developed by a company called bio on tech based in the city of mines in the 1st part of the trial 200 healthy people between the ages of 18 and 55 will receive several variants of the vaccine and 5 ian
12:08 pm
smith from d.w. science has been looking in to this story for us hi fabienne what more have we heard about the vaccine and the clinical trials process here. yeah i basically just follow the press conference of c. companies are producing it together was a polish institute which is the germans to touche and that's in charge of. licensing the vaccine development process and also basically pursuing it along with companies as the situation is that we have the 1st big scene now that is a hold called m.r. and a vaccine the. as it is that basically is a domestic code that is harmless but it's going to triggers it mune response in the human is being brought into the cells with the help of nano particles lee peat nano particles these are little kind of. basically little it's pods that then go in
12:09 pm
there and read replicate the z m r n a. d.n.a. information so to say the genetic information and creates immune response this is only one of 4 vaccine models. that are all similar to each other some have different advantages over others that the same company is producing and it's also the only one it's only one of many others that are probably being going to be licensed in the near future to buy other companies who have all slightly different approaches but really this is a very detailed difficult hundreds stand now what's important to know is that it will take about 6 weeks for the 1st phase one trial was $200.00 participants and only then will there be more clarity about whether this
12:10 pm
passes the right to pursue or with maybe as a. vaccine said have in the meantime also gone into phase one maybe the better ones then after phase one comes face to that what then probably be in the summer and so it will take some time ok in 5 years just very quickly everyone wants to know about a timeline if these clinical trials are successful one could we have a vaccine for the public. basically if we're talking about some muscle we're would be in june no was his 1st phase one then comes phase 2 probably another 6 weeks at least. probably 2 months we are talking about forward could go into phase 3 by the time vaccine development also in america and switzerland is also going ahead. to be serious i think that we should be assuming that if one of these vaccines actually works which we don't know for sure yet that we would have something probably in the course of beginning early
12:11 pm
next year maybe later this year if. if we're lucky ok 5 internet from sign thank you for bringing us up to date now a vaccine being developed at the university of oxford in the u.k. is also due to begin human trials on thursday the u.k. government has been under fire for its handling of the penick more than 17000 people have died there one of the highest mortality rates in europe. a country scrambling to deal with a coronavirus pandemic this convention center in northern england has been turned into a makeshift hospital the transformation took less than 3 weeks the u.k. is racing to increase hospital capacity to cope with an ever increasing caseload the british government has been heavily criticized for failing to prepare for the outbreak it's now hoping to beat the virus by investing heavily in vaccines being
12:12 pm
developed at universities in oxford and london trials on humans are set to begin on thursday in the long run the best way to defeat corona virus is through a vaccine after all this is a new disease. this is uncertain science but i'm certain that we will throw everything we've go at developing a vaccine the potential vaccine is based on research into previous viruses when this new virus emerged there was already work going on here in oxford the mother's cry to far a sort of vaccine was being trialled humans and so what happened was the genetic code from the new corona virus was discovered in january of this year and it was possible to go back to that genetic code make these new vaccines very rapidly but even if the human trials prove successful they offer no quick fix similar tests are
12:13 pm
already being conducted in the united states researchers there say it's likely that take more than a year before a vaccine is widely available. let's have a look now at other coronavirus news researchers in switzerland say it's possible that mass vaccination could begin there as early as october if trials prove successful and approval procedures are fast tracked singapore has reported more than a 1000 new infections in a single day finding its total to more than $10000.00 cases the u.s. state of missouri has filed a lawsuit against china saying beijing tried to cover up the danger posed by the virus and south africa plans to deploy more than $70000.00 additional troops to enforce that strict lockdown that's in place until at least the end of the month now here's a look at some other stories making headlines around the world international oil prices have fallen to their lowest levels since 1999 deepening fears of
