and nurses themselves who are being blamed for the country's struggling health care system. plus happy birthday to the hubble space telescope marks 30 years of bringing the mysteries of deep space to us here on earth but the project how to overcome a rocky launch before becoming our eye in the sky. on public photo yes thanks for joining us we start in the united states where president donald trump has caused alarm by suggesting people infected with the coronavirus could be treated with ultraviolet light and disinfectant trump made those remarks during a white house press briefing after a presentation by government officials suggesting heat and sun light could weaken
9:02 pm
the virus trump has since claimed he wasn't encouraging people to ingest it disinfectant but his comments dismayed doctors present at the briefing. donald trump's claims left health experts beach let's hear it and the president's own advisers scrambling to undo any potential damage before it's too late which if they're in the white house press briefing trump suggests that disinfectant injections and u.v. light could be used to treat patients infected with the coronavirus this is. supposing we hit the body with a tremendous whether it's ultraviolet or just very powerful light. and i think you said that has him a check that you're going to test it and then i said supposing you brought the light inside the body you can which you can do either through the skin or. in some other way and i think you said you can attest to so it was interesting to put right in that i see the disinfectant but not see it in a minute one minute and is there
9:03 pm
a way we can do something like that. by injection. 'd or almost a cleaning very marks were criticized by health experts who say this infect and slick bleach are dangerous when injected or ingested when i said supposed is not the worst time that trump has made claims that even scientists in his own administration have had to debunk and only a month ago trump promoted the use of hydroxy clora keen a drug used to treat malaria as a potential cure for coated 19. the next day the government's top infectious disease expert reviewed his claim during a press conference and surgical procedures is there any evidence to suggest that as with most of my peers disapproval axis against hope to know is the answer is no and the evidence that it's talking about john is anecdotal evidence trumps recent remarks and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic have been widely criticized
9:04 pm
since the pandemic spread to the us his approval ratings have been dropping. a recent poll showed that less than half of americans trust the information they're getting from the president on the coronavirus. but for some it's not only a question of mistrust for this group of protesters trump statements are causing people in the u.s. to die they laid out dozens of fake body bags a symbol of the lives lost to the corona virus and of the many more who are expected to suffer from the virus in the united states. well the white house is claiming the president's remarks are being misrepresented in a short while ago trump said his comments weren't meant to be taken seriously but i was ask you sir quickly yes they are a very sarcastic question to the reporters in the room about disinfectant on the
9:05 pm
inside but it does kill it and it would kill it in the hands and that would make things much better if that was done in the form of a sarcastic question to the reporters well for more let's bring in d.w. stephens is in washington d.c. hi stephanie so it was sarcastic in other words that the president was only joking how credible is that. all of us political observers here and lots of experts and a lot of colleagues actually jonas who were in the room yesterday at the briefing and who are now watching that footage you just we just showed there saying there was nothing or sarcastic about it and that's the president trying to pedaling back pedal back his comments. and there's where we are now and now it's sarcasm yesterday that didn't sound like sarcasm at all and if you would have the chance to see how dr deborah brink's one of the experts in this region yesterday reacted when
9:06 pm
the president looked at her and made those comments she was really really clearly uncomfortable and that is exactly what not only a lot of journalists network c.n.n. the public the press is but also many experts very very uncomfortable with what the president has done promoting to ingest or or inject disinfectants or cleaning solutions or u.v. light inside the body to fight its covert 19 and the coronavirus that's clearly not sitting well with many or all experts maybe and it's also not. conducive to. getting more trust or getting. getting the president to be taken more serious by maybe experts and probably also the public so plenty of reactions there across the board stefan now for trump it does seem to be all about the campaign trail i think it's safe to say that but what are actually one of the
9:07 pm
polls showing us about his approval ratings at the moment. yeah probably that is seems to be the case this daily occurrence of the president. at the task force coronavirus white house task force presser is a campaign style based to serve syndicated to his clientele to his base to his supporters and he is in dire need to do this because his approval ratings are down and as i just mentioned there is really a decreasing trust within the public and across all. lines of the political spectrum in how he handles the coronavirus crisis slash what he says as he briefed yesterday the problem for the republican national congress the republican party and for trump is the independents the non undecided voters if
9:08 pm
they do not believe the president and do not go to the polls polls to vote for him he cannot win in november stephanie moans in washington thank you well here's a look at some of the latest developments in the corona virus pandemic the global death toll from covert 1000 has surpassed 193000 according to johns hopkins university to number of confirmed cases is approaching 3000000 the death toll in the united states alone has now risen above 50000 the u.s. has the world's biggest outbreak of covert and the u.k. has in one state will host a virtual international summit on june 4th for accelerating the development of a vaccine and finally amazon is extending temporary pay raises for its warehouse workers in the u.s. and canada until the middle of may the online retail giant raised wages last month in recognition of the additional work the pandemic generated in its delivery

where people applaud medics caregivers and others from their balconies and doorways but elsewhere frontline workers bear the brunt of public anger in sudan some doctors say they've been attacked by patients families who blame them for the health systems failures many medical workers left the country under the previous dictatorship that has left mostly young doctors to handle the coronavirus break. a moment of rest before the early shift begins doctors and nurses board a shuttle bus from their temporary housing to the nearby clinic they cannot keep a safe distance apart and they aren't allowed to see their own families. he's health workers have to get by on one meal a day. clinic is the main treatment center for sudan's coronavirus patients it already has 16 intensive care beds and 15 ventilators but there are nearly 40 patients being treated already every day brings new arrivals.
9:11 pm
doctors like on a. work 12 hour days after much longer they hope all the paid kind of high risk of infection but feel a strong sense of duty. the money we make isn't enough to live on we also work in other clinics and have. but it's ok. we're not here for the money all the open. crisis torn sudan is struggling after decades of dictatorship and economic mismanagement a unity government made up of the army and opposition leaders took over after mass protests last year the economy is in ruins food and fuel are in short supply economic prospects are bleak. a lot of all the. things that are very difficult even for doctors because our country is going
9:12 pm
through hard times i can only hope that the economic situation will improve soon in the meantime we will stay here and try to help people as best as we can although in my view of them not all sudanese doctors take that view because of the low pay and poor facilities many highly qualified health professionals want to move away to europe or the us. hundreds have already left and now there are not enough doctors with feelings running high some have been attacked as people blame them for the pandemic. without the girl who was attacking doctors is completely unacceptable this type of behavior should be severely punished look at the school code. sudan is now under lockdown the earth or a t's are hoping to avoid a sharp increase in corona virus cases which would overwhelm the health care system
