the 1st time in decades because of the corona just. a matter of how to welcome we begin in lebanon where the coronavirus is compounding the longstanding economic problems there lebanon's currency has lost hof of its value in recent weeks sending prices soaring and bringing new hardship to a country that has been grappling with months of financial turmoil protest is on now ignoring the lockdown restrictions to take to the streets and vent their anger . ceilings of popular anger have returned to the streets of beirut despite an ongoing lockdown and a curfew protesters have gathered outside the lebanese central bank to demonstrate against the worsening economic conditions. we think that quote all of this is not

the only pandemic was suffering from here in lebanon 11 years they've been they either had a choice to die from hunger or to die from but i know with the increase of the crisis and that the that and the cause of the value of our current. people here tell us they have nothing to lose levanon one of the most indebted countries in the world is not only battling the penn demick but also its worst economic and financial crisis in decades. the protests erupted last october initially targeting decades of economic mismanagement and corruption now with a lockdown further weighing on the economy many are simply trying to survive. all. basic level of us are all. products to suckle but we. were good ones who are

well. as a research tool. with banking sector. so well. in an attempt to dampen the financial followed of the crisis the government has restricted cash withdrawals and banned money transfers abroad. prime minister haas on the op has blamed the governor of the central bank for the currencies sharp decline and announced that a neutral international company has been tasked with auditing the bank's books. well yes my own is are you that we will not allow or tolerate interference with financial stability. because these people want the country to collapse and to shake its stability to protect themselves and their interests at the expense of the interest of lebanon and the lebanese. well look many. but for various protesters promises like that aren't enough the aid organization

human rights watch has warned that without government assistance millions in lebanon could go hungry due to the lockdown. and let's take a look now at the latest developments in the pandemic the global death toll is now more than 200000 according to figures from johns hopkins university more than a quarter of all confirmed deaths have occurred in the united states which has the world's highest number of recorded cases efficient death toll in the u.k. has passed 20000 people the figures from the national statistics office suggest the true number is much higher than that and the world health organization says we do not yet know what level of immunity those who have recovered from the virus have and how long that immunity lasts. well one of the biggest criticisms of the u.s. government early on in the corona virus outbreak was that there was a distinct lack of testing especially in marginalized and minority groups the hottest segment of the society with that in mind one group of doctors in california
3:05 am
have taken testing into their own hands and opened up a free coronavirus testing center. many people lining up here for months and months the communities had almost given up on trying to find out if they had copd 19 because they didn't have access to testing that was until dr knot i for my name and 2 of the fellow female colleagues set up a free drive through clinic. care for a hot commodity right but there's everyone you know everyone the. doctor often in says she's particularly concerned about african-americans who are more likely to die from the disease. you know the old saying you know what america catches a cold black america catches the flu and we this is an issue about social determinants of how it's an issue about health care inequality and we talk about write about a nation that's the 1st time in our history my generation that is dealing with a public health crisis they require as all of us the we to be in effect. the latest

evidence coming out of the us suggests people who are asymptomatic contagious but not physically sick may be driving the spread of the virus. we're. practicing social distancing washing our hands and wearing our 1st met but worded what is that tell me what does that tell me about my condition if we've gone soul many days already weeks with the going out of business is being close i think they need to continue to have everything close until they find a solution until they've tested everyone before they reopen that we have a worst kind of. ducked off a minute 900. colleagues hope the dental work will help minority groups now and contribute to minimizing the risk of a later surge for everyone. the tests shown in that report

look for antibodies in blood samples will earlier i spoke to paula cannon she's a professor of molecular biology and immunology at the cake school of medicine at the university of southern california i asked her how exactly antibody tests work so antibodies are sort of molecules that our party makes when we've been infected with a virus and they're very specific for the virus they literally stick to the virus and stop it working so an antibody test is looking for the presence of those antibodies in our blood because that is a real indicator that we may have been infected already with that virus here and that speaks to the reliability we're live billett in question rather how reliable are antibody tests in actually showing that a person has been infected. shows so not only that pretty but i will say currently for all the tests that are being to pilot you know sort of on the market to test coronavirus antibodies there are some questions it's a little bit of
3:08 am
a wild west out there the over 200 kits that have been made and rushed to market and while i fully expect that some of them are going to be great i also think a significant number likely to not be accurate enough to really get most useful information right even if an antibody test comes back as positive can people be sure that they are then the mean. sure so that kind of touches on a couple of things so apart from the fact that as i said some of these antibody tests may turn out just not to be sense to you know there's also the fact that you don't make antibodies straight away so there's a bit of a tank delay so for example if you were infected with the coronavirus on monday it may not be until the following weekend or even later that you actually start to make antibodies and that the antibody levels are high enough that a test can detect it so what we worry about is you know somebody who's starting to get symptoms if they go and have an antibody test and that test comes back negative
3:09 am
even though they're infected because they just haven't had enough time to build up the antibodies then that person would be given these sort of false information and think that they are you know negative and not infected when in actual fact they are so the there's a real question around this issue of timing whereby an antibody test can be negative in somebody's who's you know still at the early stages of the infection prefers a used bike to the wild west of testing indeed the eyes of the world are suddenly turning to science at the moment and looking for answers but with that in mind what kind of oversight is there to approve any body tests to ensure their quality despite the pressing age to get this done. sure so one of the issues is normally there's a very formal process a manufacturer would have to certain met in the united states to the food and drug administration the f.d.a. and have their test kind of validated and then approved under the current emergency
3:10 am
situation where in the rules get relaxed a little bit at least for a short period of time in the f.d.a. will allow people to sell things like antibody tests as long as the and the package insert with the test explicitly says this is not yet been approved by the f.d.a. this currently a huge amount of interest in figuring out which of these tests are going to be better than others the f.d.a. are performing tasks and also you know look our trees and universities around the world are also trying to sort of figure out or you know which of the good guys and frankly which ones you should ask for your money back home professor paula cannon in los angeles thank you so much and sentinel now a quick look at some of the other stories making headlines. there are new questions of the health of north korean leader kim jong un voices news agency says doctors have been sent from china to advise on kim's health south korean media have

reported that he is recovering from a heart operation. french prime minister eduardo felipe is said to present his government's plan to loosen the coronavirus lock down to parliament on tuesday the measures have been in place since march 17th france has the world's 4th highest death toll from covina 2. and israel thousands of people observing the physical distance the rules have protested over a coalition deal that leaves prime minister benjamin netanyahu in power he said to go on trial on production charges next month the agreement in say 16 month political deadlock in israel. well every year millions of visitors descend on the german city of munich to celebrate october fest the 2 a festival is a kind of full of food music and of course bia but this year the kids won't be tapped politicians decided that in times of corunna lockdowns large crowds packed together in tents was just too much of

a public health hazard. these are trying times for months. he owns the theater ashish to one of the most traditional show booths here in the munich october fest grounds. i got this flag recently for our jubilees celebrating 150 years of the theater i never thought it would soon have a black morning ribbon and it is no sense server reacting but today i'm sad and that's why the flag draped in black isn't month that shower is put on performances at the october fest every year since $985.00. what we do here in front of the tent is out of passion is we've made about $400.00 shows and a few in the 1st. month that is never canceled performances before so this hurts. that's how it is it's not fun but it's reality really. most of all he misses being

together with his team. i love seeing them all they're such great people it doesn't get better than that. $6000000.00 people from across the globe come to the munich october 1st every year to live it up drink and dance. there won't be any visitors this year though of the site in the heart of the city will remain empty munich residents are disappointed but understanding it's a shame and really sad we live just around the corner and we always used to go with the children and friends and family. i mean for munich as a city it's unfortunate and i think economically it will be detrimental for all munich residents it's a time when the world comes to visit us and when the world can see how open and warm hearted the city of munich is i think we'll miss being able to send that kind of message out into the world it's also just a time of lightness and for volatility and that's exactly what's missing in the city right now that's why it's a shame so i really do find it sad in that of what i think yes good we've all
3:14 am
contributed the children to we know the discourse and have a huge fan like the october fest would go ahead i would think well what's the point of doing all that when at the end everyone just gets together and celebrates them and if i am not. for performers like months that shallow the cancellation of the october fest is financially devastating the props or his show won't be unpacked this year still he understands the decision. because if on foot it would be irresponsible you know i really like being healthy i like earning money but i'd rather be in good health but even if times get really hard financially and emotionally it was the right thing to do so now we can look forward to the next october 1st next it isn't and that sure to happen hopefully next year.
3:15 am
