receiving huge stimulus packages and politicians are debating which climate friendly strings to attack could the pandemic actually help us fight climate change . it's good to have you with us we begin with a tragic milestone reached this tuesday in the united states more than 1000000 americans have now contracted the corona virus and that's according to the tally kept by johns hopkins university more than 57000 americans have died from coated 19 the disease caused by the buyers and proof of how quickly the virus has spread on april 10th the number of cases in the u.s. stood at 500008 took just 18 days for that figure to double all the while u.s. president faces question. criticism for what he did and did not do to stop the war

. like many other countries in the early days of the pen demick the united states was in denial about the treaty change or of the coronavirus it's going to disappear one day it's like a miracle it will disappear name of jesus and. but the miracle didn't happen and the prayer didn't help certainly not in states like new york 1000 hit the big apple hard hospitals were soon fill to capacity and morgues were overwhelmed state governor andrew entered crisis mode and issued a warning to the rest of the country. new york is in crisis helping new york and then pick up the camp and then go to the next place as this ruth across the country a prediction that turned out to be true the virus spread rapidly from coast to

coast by early april it was impossible to deny the seriousness of the situation. during a very critical phase of our war against the coronavirus the sacrifices we make over the next 4 weeks will have countless. american lives saved we're going to save a lot of american lives. we're in control of our own fate very much. despite the sacrifices within a week the united states let the world and the 1000 deaths it still tops the grim list. confirmed infections have now topped the 1000000 mark a milestone that nobody wanted to reach at a time when calls to reopen the country are growing louder. beaches in california already packed at the weekend and several cities and states are preparing to lease and stay a time restrictions. are let's pull in our correspondents defines the mons he's on

the story for us this evening in washington hello chiffons of the u.s. topping the 1000000 mark it makes up now one 3rd of all confirmed coronavirus cases in the world and people look at this and they're still asking why is the u.s. hit so hard. there is a good question and i was ahead really comprehensive and clear cut non-complex answer for you but i don't. he said in the piece we just aired here the u.s. and the trumpet administration. really missed the boat there in the beginning didn't take that too serious at least it appears that way that they really did not take serious the warnings which they had at the time that this could be really really really bet and now it is really bad and even now at the same time we're
9:05 pm
reporting those numbers i mean let this sink in within 18 days the number of cases doubled in this country from 500-0021 1000000 and growing it's not going to stop here let's be clear about this too but the case is here testing testing testing we still don't know in the united states and the trumpet missed ration acknowledges this to some point now that the experts say we still don't know where this virus actually is in particular how much it has infiltrated the country this society of people here so there is only one way forward for the u.s. it seems like and that is testing testing testing surgically as the expert the same in hot spots or mass testing whatever it is they need to get to hang on where is the virus how much how spread it is and then of course the race to the vaccine at some point if it's already of course going on but somebody has to be there so. bad
9:06 pm
bad spot right now and it's not going to let up any better so. in washington stefan thank you. or could the coronavirus pandemic be a chance to save the planet from climate change that was the question up for debate on tuesday as germany and britain hosted this year's online version of the petersburg climate dialogue german chancellor angela merkel says that climate protection has to be considered as part of the economic stimulus programs that governments are launching to help industries recover from the pandemic well in zoo is back in business from today climate activists fear that because of the corona crisis politicians may play increasingly hard to get on that climate goals addressing the 1st virtual pieces about climate dialogue. machall came out in favor of the use ambitious climate goals despite the crisis. well as

a vision to go but the thing it will be all the more important to firmly consider climate protection when we agree stimulus packages. we must ensure that we're not saving money on climate change now but invest in in future oriented technologies and we must not think nationally but continue to put our international commitments 1st because that's essential for achieving global success in climate protection. for. germany will be in charge of driving forward to europe's green deal when it takes over the e.u. presidency in july the un sees this as a moment of truth for the world we have to read in short read the opportunity to rebuild our world for the better. it says use that pandemic riccati to provide the foundation for a safe i'll stay in close even more resilient words for all people the u.n.

secretary general says the fear of the 5 days future movement protesting here in berlin friday that the political reflex could now be to bail out carbon intensive industries at the cost of climate friendly investment. of iras and the climate to talk more home joined by our chief political correspondent linda crane good evening to you melinda you know there has been this feeling that climate change the fight against climate change has almost been forgotten since the pandemic began what has prompted this renewed push for climate protection. well i think it's exactly what we just heard from the u.n. secretary general namely that in every crisis there's also an opportunity and that's something that i'm going to macas good friend are obama used to saying as well so i think the chancellor who is by no means a visionary but she is pragmatic i think she has definitely seen 2 opportunities in
9:09 pm
this crisis 1st of all because as we just heard in the report germany will on the 1st to take over the rotating e.u. council presidency and that is an opportunity for germany to really help steer europe's recovery plans for how the economy emerges from the corona crisis secondly governments and multilateral organizations the european union but also who world bank the i.m.f. and others are getting ready to commit billions of dollars trillions of dollars to recovery programs and basically this is going to shape the world economy for decades to come economists call it pounce dependence basically when you commit to say and new infrastructure or new pricing signals you are setting the parameters for economic development for a very long time and we have
9:10 pm
a chance now to quit the world economy to put national economies on a green recovery path in their transport systems in their energy systems in their consumer sectors if we do not do that the mystery in disruption that we will fix will make the corona crisis pale by comparison and in seems that policymakers are on the same page with this i'm wondering though do they have broader support. they do i think amongst the general public there's greater openness perhaps for ambitious policies than there might have been in the past because people have just experienced in their own eyes what a crisis looks like and are going to be eager to not see a repeat another crisis namely caused by global warming that's one part the 2nd part is business business feels the same way and for one very practical reason business needs clear and reliable signals about how to invest as it emerges from
9:11 pm
this crisis and that's why $68.00 big german companies and i'm not only out service companies like insurers i'm talking about steel chemicals companies that normally would say we need really cheap energy they have called for ambitious climate policy to be at the center of the recovery programs because they want those reliable signals for how do we invest their money emerging from this crisis right from the green on the story for us here in berlin melinda thank you surveillance cameras are a part of public life in china they're often there watching when people cross the street eat in a restaurant ride the bus or enter a shopping mall but according to a new report by c.n.n. the coronavirus pandemic has now brought surveillance cameras to the front door of people's home. doesn't use all the soccer has been researching this force good evening to you know what 1st of all tell me what

exactly is being reported here. hi brant so this is a way for chinese authorities to keep an eye on people who should be staying inside now most people in china are already being tracked by so-called contexta tracing apps and that's an app that will notify you if you have been exposed to someone who's been diagnosed with covert 19 and then you'll be told to south quarantine but recently people have started posting pictures on the way by chinese social media platform of cameras being installed outside their apartment doors and in some extreme examples of cameras being installed inside apartments now this seems extreme especially for us who don't live in china but remember china has more surveillance cameras per capita than any other country in the world but even so the area just outside your apartment door is a bit of the grace so when it comes to the difference between public and private
9:13 pm
space so even for china this is extreme so if china hands in or many of these cameras across the country who's actually monitoring all the cameras we're talking about an army of people watching as well. well 1st of all these cameras haven't been installed by the central government in china but rather by local governments and they are being monitored by so-called neighborhood committees now these are groups that have a long history in communist china they basically private citizens who act as the on ice and is of authorities to make sure that their neighbors behave now it's important to say that in all of these reported cases these cameras were taken down after the 2 week quarantine ended but it does really raise questions about the use of surveillance technology during the corona pandemic be it cameras or being tracing apps and what will happen to that technology and more importantly the

daughter that has been stored after the pandemic has passed you know this speaks to the discussion going on about privacy are we seeing similar privacy issues in other countries. well we have a few examples in hong kong for examples of people arriving from overseas and now issued a. and electronic bracelet and the idea here is to same to make sure for authorities to make sure that people stay in their apartments or their hotel rooms during the chewie currency currency in poland now when you're in quarantine you have a choice between frequent police visits or taking selfies and sending them via and after 2 authorities to prove that you're actually in your head and finally in israel the government there has come under criticism for using surveillance technology that has been developed by the country's internal intelligence agency

now that went all the way to the high court on sunday they ruled that it's now up to the knesset the country's parliament by thursday to decide whether this should be allowed to continue you know there will probably be similar cases across the world as this pandemic continues well soccer reporting tonight thank you for your watching the w. news live from berlin i'll be back at the top of the hour with more warnings followed by the day i hope to see you then. combating the corona pandemic. where does research stand. what are scientists learning. background information and news. our corona update. from the covert 19 special next on d w hey listen. that's one video game music sounded on 30
