9:01 pm
for the main after spending months in camps and in squalor plus how's your hair fairing in this fandom media. business is booming for barbers in germany as thousands raced to finally rid themselves of their walk down last us. i'm burnt off it's good to have you with us the race to develop a vaccine against the corona virus is underway and it comes with a price today led by the european union countries around the world pledged nearly 7 and a half 1000000000 euros to fund the fight against the virus e.u. chief. held the event as a victory for global cooperation but today's fund raiser was just as notable for the no shows as it was for the money we have more now in this report. let's start
9:02 pm
the pledging the e.u. kicked off its fundraising drive with $1000000000.00 euros in the hours that followed pledges were beamed in from across the globe the kingdom of so that abia has pledged 500000000 dollars even pump icon madonna made a last minute donation of a 1000000 euros it wasn't enough to reach the fundraisers target which housed us in a funded lion insisted it sent the right signal get out yes today is a defining moment for the global community at a time when we're sitting further apart than usual the world has shown it was floods ok. national editor richard walker in brussels richard e. achievers live on the line she says that the world is united against the coronavirus china in the u.s. however pledged nothing today so how united all we really are. yeah good
9:03 pm
question brant i mean of course china was at least involved in this video conference but at a very low level and pledged no additional funding the united states though wasn't even taking part and it is really particularly striking in the case of the u.s. mean if you think back to almost any moment in recent decades the united states would have been the natural leader of this effort it has the political might it has the economic might it has the scientific might to take on that global leadership and yet it's not in the room it's at war with in a war of words with china about who's responsible for the for the beginning of the outbreak it's pulled funding from the world health organization so from the point of view of the european union which is determined to be the sort of last remaining believer in multilateralism on the world stage it is almost looking like
9:04 pm
a complete scupper of these efforts china on the other hand is looked at as a state that believes in multilateralism when it suits it but hasn't put any money here a tool either but still the european union stresses this is really important work it's worthwhile and this 7 half 1000000000 or so euros is just the start of something that's going to be a much bigger project in the months to come you know reduce it this is just the start we've got 7 have 1000000000 euros pledged to hell much more money is actually need to do we know. well the secretary general of the united nations said that something like 5 times this amount would be needed also metally over the next year maybe year and a half or so brigid put that in proportion if you think about it what all of the central banks around the world governments around the world have been pumping into
9:05 pm
economies there to deal with the economic and social impact of the coronavirus that really dwarfs this amount of money that we're talking about here i mean the european union for instance is looking at a recovery plan for after the pandemic the numbers bandied around there go up to one and a half trillion euros so that's $200.00 times as much as been as was pledged today . and so i think it's clear that every penny invested in the medical efforts to tackle a coronavirus will be paid back many times over or either rich walk around destroyed wards in brussels richard thank you. all right here is a brief look now at the other stories that are making headlines this hour the leader of lebanon's program radian hezbollah a group says that germany is succumbing to american will by banning his movements last week germany banned all of hezbollah's activities on german soil and designated the iran backed group a terrorist organization the widow of
9:06 pm
a german islamic state fighter and went on trial in a hamburg court today as she lived in syria with her husband a rapper who went by the name of deaths of dog who was killed there in 2018 she now faces charges including membership in a foreign terror group and crimes against humanity. turkey will start easing coronavirus lockdown measures beginning next monday president to one says that intercity travel restrictions in 7 provinces will be lifted but not in istanbul and ankara seniors and those under the age of 20 will be allowed outside for 4 hours one day a week. greek authorities have transferred 400 asylum seekers to mainland greece from the crowded a refugee camp on the island of lesbos humanitarian groups have been calling on the greek government to evacuate the camp due to overcrowded conditions as well as the
9:07 pm
threat of a coronavirus outbreak an estimated $800000.00 migrants live in or around this refugee camp which has been under lockdown for over a month this is the 1st large transfer since the lockdown began. my colleague s. if he has reported from this camp from lesbos he joins me now here the big tables so aid organizations like human rights watch for example they have said that it's time to evacuate the camp they've been calling for that for a long time why is it so urgent right now there's 2 reasons for that the one is the big what if now imagine if the coronavirus got into the camp of the. 18000 people that was built for 3000 unbelievably crowded conditions where people are sleeping sometimes 5 people in a 2 person tent no way to socially distance in that situation and some doctors there are saying that there would be thousands of cases at the camp before anybody tested positive now just imagine what they would do on an island where thousands of
9:08 pm
people came down with the crown of ours at the same time stressing the hospital system that the 2nd thing though is what's going on right now not the what if but the what is so that the lockdown there is a pretty strict lockdown and it has exacerbated the already poor conditions in that camp i mean what does i mean just imagine what it looks like right here what does a the lockdown look like they are it's basically 247 from 7 pm to 7 am during the night nobody is allowed to go out and then during the day only about 100 people are allowed to go out for our no 100 people is not that much compared to the 18000 people that live there so right about 95 percent of the people won't be able to go out on any given day what i saw when i was there was how people would leave the camp to go supplement their resources so go grocery shopping or get things like lightbulbs and stuff that they can't didn't provide and now that is basically not open to them and what that leads to is this we have this video sent to us by n.g.o.s german n.g.o.s that shows the lunch line now if you imagine
9:09 pm
people go to the grocery store make their own lunch but now since they can't they have to rely on the official provisions there and that leads to lunch lines of sometimes just 6 hours waiting that's the better part of your day time just standing in a line like this is only half way through now so the conditions have gotten worse under lockdown and making a bad situation even worse and that's why n.g.o.s are calling for immediate evacuation and you really look at that video there's no social distancing taking place there i was there room for hi jake place. greek authorities we understand transferred 400 asylum seekers to the mainland is this the beginning of in a vacuum. is that what we're looking at it's been a change of policies greek government hadn't evacuated anybody since the beginning of lock down it almost seen the island as a quarantine in itself but i think now they're listening to n.g.o.s and realizing that it's a powder keg so they've begun evacuations $400.00 is just a drop in the bucket it's supposed to be beginning of
9:10 pm
a larger evacuation but they've been promising now for ever for at least several years and we'll have to see if that happens i mean that's that has always always we appreciate your reporting thank you. let's talk about germany now in the rush to snip the locks of the lock i'm talking about your hair the country's hair salons are once again open for business after germany further eased its restrictions today for many here in berlin it's a welcome relief after some well do it yourself disasters. after so long few here will ever take a wash cut and blow dry for granted again hair salons in berlin have reopened after 6 weeks of enforced closure for some customers it was really high time. i was cutting my own hair and it started looking awful yourself with that up now the challenge is for both stylist and customer to wear face masks so that it's
9:11 pm
going to please remove the elastic bands and hold the mask to your face. oh now you've taken it off. i didn't brief are you crazy. but it seems to be working. as you can see i'm desperate my last haircut was in november yes we've been here for years. and his coworkers are fully booked through the end of the month walk ins are out of the question. now that people know we're open again the phone has been ringing off the hook from morning till night but that's fine with me i'm glad. plastic curtains provide some protection between customers during shampooing the new regulations are being strictly obeyed what matters is that the salons are at
9:12 pm
last open for business again many in the sector depended on state assistance. that is financially speaking it's not the best situation but i think many are in the same boat and so many people have lost their jobs so i really can't complain. with my system i made good use of my free time to those i've never had 6 weeks off before. furious 5 and i was far. behind in the music for. finally there's hair to be swept up again. even wearing face masks at least people can hold their heads up high again. that's my personal lockdown is over at least as far as my hairdo goes thank goodness. the formula electric receiving series is on hold drivers are having to make do with
