11:00 pm
this is g w news live from berlin tonight the world makes a big payment to fund the fight against the coronavirus world leaders pledge 7 and a half 1000000000 euros to help fund vaccines treatment and testing but how much will it take to make it all available and affordable for everyone also coming up hidden in the hot spot a study from a german town suggests the number of infected people is likely 10 times higher than the number of confirmed cases plus formula 3 seeing real and virtual braces on hold due to the endemic but drivers are competing on these kinds of

circuits drop. off it's good to have you with us the race to develop a vaccine against the corona virus is underway and it comes with a price today led by the european union countries around the world pledged nearly 7 and a half 1000000000 euros to fund the fight against the virus european union chief ursula fund a lion held the event as a victory for global cooperation but today's fund raiser was just as notable for the no shows as for the donations we have more now in this report. let's start the pledging the e.u. kicked off its fund raising drive with $1000000000.00 euros in the hours that followed pledges were beamed in from across the globe the kingdom of saudi arabia
11:02 pm
has pledged 500000000 dollars even pop icon madonna made a last minute donation of a 1000000 euros it wasn't enough to reach the fundraisers target but housed in a funded line insisted it sent the right signal yes today is a defining moment for the global community at a time when we are sitting for a lower part than usual the world has shown it is standing closer together than ever before but not quite all of the world a chinese delegate took part but didn't pledge any money russia and the united states were both absent from the conference for her part the german chancellor apparently couldn't resist a jab at the u.s. president. as a time when we don't always see multilateral cooperation as i would like and i think today's a very important signal of hope. germany was one of the leading donors pledging over 500000000 euros the money is earmarked for international health organizations
11:03 pm
and research networks in a bid to speed up the development of a vaccine many scientists say it could be 18 months or more before a vaccine is ready for widespread use and when it is more money will be needed to ensure it can be produced in large quantities and distributed for a fair price around the world today sprint was a great start for our madness on the merits is the way ahead know we need everyone on board. united nations secretary general antonio tara she described the funds as a dime payment he said that to reach everyone everywhere the world must raise 5 times that amount. and for more on this i'm joined now by dr seth berkley he's an epidemiologist and c.e.o. of the vaccine alliance gavi ga v.i.i. that's a public private partnership that leads immunization campaigns in poor countries
11:04 pm
around the world dr burkley it's good to have you on this so let's let's talk about the money here for a moment we got pledges today about 7400000000 euros for research to help find a vaccine is that enough. well 1st of all that 7400000000 was for a vaccines treatment and diagnostics of that around 4000000000 was earmarked for vaccines and that really is to both fund research today for about 2000000000 but also to begin to prepare for scaling up the manufacturing as well as thinking about being able to have instruments to be able to purchase vaccines for those living in the poorest countries of course depending upon the vaccine technology so that one dose 2 doses how is it made what's it going to cost we don't know that yet what about the no shows today china and the united states i'm not for to suppose that he is that going to impact the development of a vaccine well for
11:05 pm
a science you want this is a global problem you want to global effort you want the best vaccines anywhere they are in the world the best science to then be scaled up and deliver it to everywhere in the world if we move to national efforts we won't optimized for the science and it's not just the vaccine it may be things you put in the vaccine to make them stimulate that are or manufacturing needs to be done the way science works is global that's way we can best do it. you are leading the charge to make sure the vaccines are available to everyone what are you demanding tonight from world leaders. well the most important thing 1st of all is to have that mindset that says this is a global problem and need a global solution and why is that important if you are thinking about it if there are a large reservoir as a virus anywhere in the world the world is not safe not just those countries that have the virus but the world so if we can get a sense that says we have to stop this and demick everywhere in the world because
11:06 pm
we saw what happened it started with a few cases and and outside of one han and it spread to $180.00 countries over a few months so we need to make sure that we have this vaccine available for everybody in the world so it doesn't work based on your experience when can we realistically expect a vaccine i mean we're getting predictions that something could be available as soon as the end of september well i think it's too early to say what's going to win since we don't have clinical data in humans from any of the vaccines the good news is science is moving quickly there are 102 approaches on the w.h.o. website already we have 8 products in humans but we're going to need to understand are those products showing promise are we seeing results is it going to be a linear pathway often in vaccine ology you have to go back and change the dosing and work more on it so i think it's going to take some time if we're very very
11:07 pm
lucky we could see some results by the fall but i don't think we're going to have licensed product by then by any means ok dr seth berkley joining us tonight from geneva switzerland like the birth we appreciate your time in your insights thank you. a new study estimates that the number of actual coated 1000 cases here in germany is far higher than officially reported the study of the region around hinds fair which was an early coronavirus hot spot in the country found that infections in some areas were 5 times higher than previously know it also found that 20 percent of people infected had no symptoms making it harder to trace the disease as progress researchers estimate 1800000 people in germany have already contracted the corona virus. alas our chief political correspondent lyndal crane what the results of that study mean for germany as it moves forward. first of all a significant share of those who have been infected about
11:08 pm
a 5th overall had no symptoms and this absolutely underlines the importance of how we behave as we begin to relax restrictions on going back into public namely you need to be wearing a mask you need to be maintaining distance to other people even if you feel fine because otherwise you could infect them secondly that 1800000 number more than 10 times as many people appear to have been infected as what was previously confirmed now that goes to the question of herd immunity the idea that we eventually could get to a point where this virus is less of a risk to health services and less of a risk to society as a whole because a lot of people have already gotten it and become and you know but the fact is 1800000 may sound like a lot but that means there are still over 80000000 germans who haven't had copd and
11:09 pm
so we are in luck way from herd immunity. and there was our chief political correspondent there melinda crane what to do about the crew the german travel group to we is planning to test nearly $3000.00 cruise ships workers quarantined aboard one of the ships 2 he says that it was using the mine ship 3 to ferry thousands of its employees home amid the pandemic but this ship ran into trouble when it docked in coops hoben in late april with over a dozen crew members exhibiting flu like symptoms. the cruise ship that's now a quarantine station. the my ship 3 is part of the 2 a fleet 300 meters long with a 2500 passenger capacity but no tourists are aboard only crew and they're stuck. with 8 confirmed cases of coronavirus no one's allowed to enter

quarantine ship. the cruise firms management has declined to grant any interviews. broken furniture after outbursts of rage pregnant crew members and unpaid wages these reports of some crew members show a very tense situation on board of the many nationalities on the ship there alone roughly 800 filipinos yet it's completely unclear how and when they can be brought home some are indeed eager to get home others dream of more travel martina and have a vest or comp were aboard this very cruise ship in the caribbean. when do you think you'll be able to travel again. it doesn't and i hope it will be in the next 2 or 3 months. that if they don't it maybe not a broad but in germany i would think. in the meantime beach chairs sit empty on the
