fast and safely the company's c.e.o. has become a leading critic of lock down measures threatening to pull operations out of the state officials don't allow production to continue. and let's bring in our financial correspondent in new york yes korda good to see you let's start with tesla what's behind this confrontation between the company and local authorities. yeah there is this huge sure controversy who's in charge districts states all the federal government and while production restarts in michigan for example next week for the big 3 california obviously and specially the district that is in charge of tesla has a different opinion by the way if the stock of tesla does not really react in a big way it has more than doubled in the past and couple of weeks but yet this is one of the big controversies surrounding tesla and different rules in different states and districts. doesn't this miss the bigger question of whether there's even
11:19 pm
demand for cars right now who's buying tesla's. you know well i mean is 5 might see right now and i'm here on a local street in brooklyn and some local streets i get actually cut off from traffic so that people can keep their social distancing while they want to take a walk in the sunshine well it's not just about tesla but about the car industry overall and there is some hope at least for old car manufacturers including tesla that people might actually shy away from public transport so it will get not infected with the coronavirus and that we might see a spike in car sales not right now but maybe in the coming months the question is how much money people will have left after the crisis to purchase a new car but that actually could be a trend that more people are looking for their own transportation and a good point as everyone looks for the demand question there i want to focus now on consumer prices are report coming out in the u.s. that shows the biggest dip in consumer prices since the recession what's behind
11:20 pm
that. i don't actually even if you look at the core rate of consumer prices we saw the baby the biggest that ever in april well as you can imagine the prices for clothes for example dropped heavily and also at the prices for transport but as least for now economists are not too concerned that we might see a long lasting deflation for example because most economists economists believe now that slowly the economy is restarting in the united states that we actually might see a spike in prices not yet but maybe in a couple of months well the funny thing about this is that in some parts there actually rising prices like with food for example what's going on there yeah sure i mean people they stay at home and they cook their own meals so you for example in april saw the biggest spike in prices for cereals or also for everything what you need to bake and also people getting more computers at the moment because they have
11:21 pm
to work from home there is still no school for example here in new york and that won't change at least before unfold so also the prices for computers there's actually quite a spike in the past month or a year as quarter with the latest from new york thank you. let's take a look now at some of the other business stories making headlines. irish budget airline ryan air plans to increase flights to 40 percent of its usual capacity by the 1st of july as the company plots a path out of the coronavirus crisis since mid march ryanair has run just 30 flights a day has restrictions have effectively closed european routes. china's car market is revving up again sales last month came close to last year's level down just 2.6 percent compared to april 29th team and that came after new registrations fell in february by a whopping 80 percent year on year and almost 50 percent in march. all

right now we're going to turn to a dispute between berlin and brussels over e.u. monetary policy that started last week when germany's highest court ruled that the european central bank's bond buying scheme was partially legal and the e.c.b. responded saying it's accords only from the e.u.'s highest court and not germany's on monday chancellor angela merkel stressed that the dispute was solvable but the route has triggered a legal minefield. the european central bank has spent billions in recent years buying bonds from member countries the ngos to prop up economic growth in the flagging euro area. but last week germany's constitutional court said some of the seabees actions were illegal under german law it ruled the bank should have thought more about the possible negative impact of its policy it's the 1st time the top german court has pitted itself against the use institutions in this way so does it
11:23 pm
mean a big clash at the heart of europe not according to the german government it's cute not. an example that the european court of justice is the guardian of the european treaties in our view the constitutional court has not questioned that it is merely called for a careful balance and justification of the policy. but the european central bank said it does not follow the rulings of national courts and commission president on the line is considering legal action against germany opposition politicians in berlin since this battle could last for some time. in the short term we do not expect any fallout from the court's decision but in the medium to long term we face long postponed questions about the future architecture of economic and monetary union the open question is will we have more joint liability or will be strengthen the principle of fiscal responsibility in the e.u. . and sadly this is above all
11:24 pm
a political failure the european central bank's hands are tied by politicians it's not allowed to bankroll of financially support the member states but on the other hand there's no common financial policy this conflict will require a political solution. it's not helpful that other countries which are involved with brasil such as poland have applauded the decision of the german court chancellor merkel has so far only said she wants a clever response to the questions raised by the case that response could have a big impact on the future of the euro and her government has been given just 3 months to react. well they say necessity is the mother of all invention and that's something many businesses are learning during the crow virus crisis to germany small wine makers are having a tough time with the loss of tourism due to the pandemic their solution is to go online if there's germany's oldest wine drawing region the money.

clearly in a has been offering her regular customers wine tasting classes on you tube. it's a good opportunity to market her product. this is just a nice fresh but also powerful line. these wine boxes were sent out by courier a week before the virtual wine tasting to make sure they'd be with the customers on time there were a total of 70 orders. going online it was a good decision. at least we now have the opportunity for customers to see us we've talked to many customers on the phone and written emails about our campaign the response has been great. so great that for lena is planning on sticking with the new sales channel once the pandemic is over.

and while wine drinkers may have to look online for their favorite tipple it's a different story in the spiritual home of beer the czech republic is easing its lock down and that means beer drinkers can make a beeline for progs beer gardens which are now open again for now czech pubs and restaurants are only allowed to serve food and drinks in outside seating areas or through window guests must observe a safe distance and wear face masks unless they're drinking eating or smoking. otherwise it would get a little messy and that's it from me and the business team here in berlin to check us out online a dot com slash business i'm stephen beardsley thanks for watching. the
