this is. the. economy into recession. in the. biggest economy. in over a decade. and reaction coming up.
12:01 pm
this weekend. as. tens of thousands of people. across. germany's economy took its hardest hit since the 2009 financial crisis last quarter contracting 2.2 percent. closed shops and restaurants wiped out and sent manufacturing into a tailspin and the government says before any recovery takes hold there's. more
12:02 pm
being ahead. germany's g.d.p. data is due me even if slowly but surely the lights of the economy are being turned on again. folks the country's biggest carmaker opened its main vote spurred plant a few weeks ago and despite distancing measures is edging towards full capacity. as well as manufacturing the services sector is returning to normal hairdressers opened last week well it's even possible now to meet friends for beer again some cafes and bars open their outdoors areas. while that suggests some hope a lot of damage has been done the german g.d.p. 1st quarter fall of 2.2 percent is a dramatic drop after years of relative stability it also means germany has now officially entered recession with 2 successive quarterly falls and the 3rd quarter will be much worse although the drop is sharp it's not as bad as analysts feared and it's better than most eurozone countries where lockdowns have been longer and
12:03 pm
deeper although that is not necessarily a consolation for the german government given the state of the european economy as a whole. was. all with this for the i believe that it would be very very very important for the revival of the german economy that the european economy is recovering to its full capacity because we are dependent on suppliers all over europe we are dependent on exports all over your goals it is in our own best interest that we all do the. business. with berlin's tourist hot spots still eerily quiet due to travel restrictions it's a reminder that things won't fully get better anywhere in europe until they get better everywhere. let's take you to frankfurt where our correspondent joe to delineate is standing by chelsea it's the steepest contraction since the financial crisis is a bit in many ways a contraction was expected wasn't it. certainly was expected all of the
12:04 pm
data that we've gotten for the 1st 3 months of the year has shown just an absolute devastation across the german economy exports industrial production service sector activity for restaurants hotels retail all has really suggested a steep contraction what is a surprise from the state is that germany is now officially in recession a lot of a lot of economists had not expected that until later in the year but as part of this this new data that came out today the government actually revised the 4th quarter down so now it germany has has arrived in recession quicker than people had expected. what was going to get in the quarter was a good it's certainly going to get worse economists expect this current quarter the 2nd quarter to really be the low point for the german economy there are a lot of estimates the consensus is really for contraction around 10 percent
12:05 pm
a lot of economists do expect the economy to bounce back as the economy reopens as people get back to work and back into factories but there is overhanging question of demand will people really be ready to get back into the economy so that's obviously going to impact the way forward jumps are just embarrassing with other countries how bad is germany situation well that's really been the takeaway of of today's germany is fairing a lot better than a lot of its european neighbors and the united states as well france italy spain all have contractions of around 6 percent so germany is really benefiting a from the fact that it didn't have to have such a long and severe. lock down but it also has put a lot of effort into to stimulating the economy and to keeping people from losing their jobs and businesses from going under so that also is helping cushion the blow jobs or do any thank you very much for that. for more on this
12:06 pm
difficult on from a business desk is here in the studio with me if it welcome a 2.2 percent contraction in the economy and us shelter you said this is now a recession what does this mean for ordinary people. on the ground. people a lot of people have lost their jobs we haven't seen that filter through yes actually employment levels rose in these figures which shows that there is an anomaly because only one month of the lockdown is in there but it means that people have been on short term work in some ways it's been managed a lot better in germany and other countries so i think for a lot of people in germany while they felt. and they've noticed that there's a 3rd there is less work there a lot of people having to work from home as they are everywhere and people are definitely feeling it but it has been quite as extreme as in other countries and now people are going to be looking forward to see how things develop and speaking of these developing germany has already eased suddenly looked on destruction significantly does that mean businesses are rebounding they are very slowly but
12:07 pm
it's still still a bit early to tell and the data is lagging a bit because a as we've seen you know but it definitely things are getting more lively it's still it's still very very slow and it's a slow process i think people's expectations that the recovery will be like a v. shape i think people are more expecting things to be a little bit more gradual now. but speaking about the data and as bad as this data is there still appear to be hints of stability in there somewhere is it fair to say that germany's economy is well prepared to weather this endemic i think so i think the message definitely coming from germany is one of stability and i think that will be a positive signal for elsewhere in europe as well because germany is the european economic powerhouse so i think i think germany is sort of taking that role very seriously at its stability has been the message coming out of its handling of the crisis if it going on thank you very much for breaking that down for us.
12:08 pm
and staying with germany this weekend sees the return of professional sucka to the country of the bundesliga we become the 1st major league in your to restart following the coronavirus lockdown suk of us to say it's more than just a sport but an economic driver as well the big leagues across europe will be watching to see how this might change conditions for germany's bundesliga. since mid march germany's football stadiums have fallen silent now the bundesliga ams to emerge from its coronavirus brick with so-called closed door matches without fans and under strict hygiene rules the idea to get back out on the pitch as soon as possible. gets anyone who rejects close door matches needn't wreck their brains about whether the league will have 18 or 20 professional clubs playing in the future because in that case there won't be 20 professional clubs left. it's
12:09 pm
not only a mic or break issue for the german league the other big european leagues are also deliberating how to emerge from a lockdown. the english premier league is the biggest money maker in european football followed by the bundesliga and by spans legen for the premier league and lega t.v. revenue accounts for more than half of all income. it's slightly less than that for the bundesliga but they're determined to get the ball rolling again even without spectators if that's what it takes to keep revenues flowing. when matches are aired the advertising boards around the pitch will provide another financial boost in the current crisis the upcoming weeks will show how well the new concept works but there's no doubt that the game will be a different one has seen in south korea where the caley season kicked off last week gold celebrated with social distancing. a sign of the times.
12:10 pm
so the point is they got ticks off this weekend as the 1st major league in europe to get back in action meadows for need of the sports is here to tell us more mock welcome. a number of close contact activities us to not allowed in germany how abundantly your boss was able to persuade authorities to go ahead with this it was basically authorities pushing forward as well because they see it as a boost to the morale in general i mean millions of people watch the blunders they get every week and if the bundesliga comes back then it means there's a little bit of a hope that this really strange situation is maybe coming to an end it's also a financial issue of course as we just heard i mean a lot of clubs could have gone bust if the league never came back and that's the main driver of it for on this and also it's a favor in the cap of germany because they're the 1st major league to manage to do this yes it is very strict hygiene regulations yes there's no fans at the games but leagues around the world are watching jim in the premier league is basically going
12:11 pm
to try and copy what the blunders the game is doing in england. normally it's the other way around but jim you really is a trendsetter this time setting the standards there but much as you said replays are played behind closed doors which is to say north fans but when the log down began some fans did gather outside stadiums do you see that happening this time as well police are worried about it but i don't think it's going to be a major factor i think most people in germany have been pretty good with the rules over the last couple of months and you know it's also a way fans tend to be the most fervent fans the ones who travel long distances to games now as if they're not going to bother going on hundreds of kilometers to go to a game they can't get in to and also it's kind of pointless to stand outside the joy of standing outside for people who say don't have tickets is to hear the crowd noise and to hear the reaction when there's a goal if they stand outside they won't even know they've been there's been a goal if you're going to go then all it's going to happen is you going to get arrested so i don't really see it happening yes at the paris engine mount game in
12:12 pm
march there were a lot of fans outside and that was a problem but that was at the very start of this crisis i think 2 months on everyone's kind of got more used to it but as i say the police our own god friendster we watch on t.v. but then there's also going to be another special character arcs books all touch who's going to have to stay away for a rather special reason yes i mean obviously all the teams have been quarantined this week ahead of the games to avoid infection. helic decided to nip out of his hotel to go and get some toothpaste that idea because now they said you cannot be at the game on saturday he is barred from the game yesterday to negative coronavirus tests before he can rejoin his group mark meadows thank you very much for that. so the bundesliga kicks off without any fans in the stadium this weekend one of those should do with matches is the rule a doggie between and it's one of the fiercest rivalries in john months but what
12:13 pm
this will be like for the team's fans when they count in gauging their regular shows of support. this time everything is different the stadium an empty cell section no fans in the emotions the prestigious darby between top and shelf has turned into a ghost kay not a fun or did you fear i know hundreds of people there in the south section and you miss them you look forward to the game for weeks and you go there. and drink a beer. and now nothing without fans is like having sex on your own 6 along. in his life time bruno records has only missed 4 home games of his beloved dog he experienced his 1st dog minshull to darby 51 years ago so missing out now especially hurts. one concern for me the number you just can't change it i'm sad and i don't know what i'll do on saturday if the weather's good i'll probably go
12:14 pm
for a walk this season is over from angels with domains of tone itself everything is also different the shelter fan pub distiller has only a few guests and to prevent fans from cheering too closely to one another at a shelter a goal the pubs owner might not show the darby on t.v. but there is still a bit of anticipation. is always highly emotional i don't sleep leading up to it and then what happens on saturday at 330 i don't know well freak out then anyway but we have to keep our distance it's very important to studs answers to. the fans are looking forward to the 1st ghost darby in football history with mixed feelings but they all agree on one thing a darby without fans has no real value. and stop to look at some of the latest developments in the coronavirus pandemic a johns hopkins university says the global death toll has dropped 300000 there are
12:15 pm
more than 4400000 confirmed cases worldwide south sudan has registered its 1st stance from the coronavirus turkey's death toll from covert $1000.00 has now passed $4000.00 and slovenia has called an official end to its spend demick becoming the 1st european country to do so of course one key weapon in the fight against the coronavirus is widespread testing to help pinpoint an isolated infected people but in much of the world those tests are scarce german doctors have trouble to colombia with some precious cargo and valuable experience to help keep people safe in conspicuous boxes filled with hope. hope for columbia to get a hold of its invisible enemy this delegation of epidemiologists from berlin arrived in bogota with precious cargo. $80000.00 tests and a lot of experience. both of them will step in the us we all have
12:16 pm
a lot to learn from each other what's been the best way to improve health care provisions. which have been the best social distancing measures but we also have to cooperate to improve scientific research. and make sure virologist and epidemiologists can share their findings. well. dr christiane popescu his team came to colombia at the government's request in collaboration with local experts they hope to improve testing capacities especially in remote regions that lack an adequate infrastructure to face the pandemic. our goal is to establish testing in the north of the country along the border with venezuela the region is home to a large population ob mention of it and i mean these and we want to make sure that these people have access to safe diagnostics to enable the implementation of
12:17 pm
effective public health measures on the ranch and on again i think on. knowing where help is needed is crucial for the mission success. in one of the country's top labs the team from germany learns that things are in the very different way to back home. for him drones it was in one of our research projects in germany and processed 60000 samples between january and april with the help of robots here they told us that they process the same amount of samples manually working 17 hours a day that's very impressive. more impressive but the battle against the virus isn't only fought in stair our labs it's the work on the ground that makes the biggest difference the german doctors join local health care facials checking up on people in the kennedy neighborhood of bogota no district has been hit harder than this one home to many of the city's most disadvantaged. we think we're going
12:18 pm
to put in between 25 and 30 percent of the population are considered vulnerable mekong self isolate the concordant team because they have to make money for their families so it's not only a public health problem with it's also a social issue that needs to be addressed similar tenuously but that's a new look in the socio economic reality in colombia has little in common with that in germany but as countries move closer together to defeat the pandemic these differences become irrelevant building on the lasting benefits of scientific exchange dr pascoe's mission is meant to be but a 1st step in a cooperation it's hoped will outlive the common enemy. you're watching today of a news still to come the double reporters tell us how covert 19 is making family life a rough ride where they lived around the world. the typhoon
12:19 pm
has slammed into the east and for. beans as authorities struggle to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people but many of the emergency shelters are overcrowded with no means of social distancing and without proper safety gear against a coronavirus typhoon is expected to strip across densely populated areas before exiting in the north sunday. is packing powerful sustained winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour the typhoon has devastated parts of the country and it's putting millions of lives at risk because of the coronavirus pandemic areas hit by the typhoon are under lockdown and people are trying to stay at home to avoid infection. the authorities ever vacuity had around 200000 people they now face contracting the virus at overcrowded imagines he shelters due to social distancing measures the shelters can only accept half their capacity and
12:20 pm
people have to wear face masks but not everyone has one and many are trying their best to keep safe. now we have a lack of supplies for face masks that's why we have started to make our own once the spread of the virus. typhoons are a common occurrence in the philippines but this time the corona virus outbreak has made the threat even worse the national weather agency warns of potential flooding and landslides in the coming days. from. has already ravaged several islands of the philippines how bad is the damage. paresh government officials that i spoke to told me that managing a typhoon in the middle of a pandemic is an absolute nightmare we've seen the photos from the provinces where
12:21 pm
the typhoon 1st made landfall and we saw thousands of people whose houses were just flat and by the by the very strong winds now these are the same people who have been evacuated into temporary shelters that are overcrowded and where sanitation is already very challenging now what's going to happen to them after the typhoon is the big question and they won't have homes to go home to where they can self isolate or quarantine their she's are the people that are caught between surviving a typhoon and surviving a raging pandemic as you mentioned this is a typhoon in the middle of a good run of august pandemic and people managing. government resources are very much overstretched and manpower is they're also very fatigued it's been 2 months since we've had a lockdown so it's been very very difficult on the side of government and also at the support and also on the side of the people and bearing down on the emotional
12:22 pm
toll of the lock down but what now really high sense on of this is the thai food people are cramped and evacuation centers where the things that are supposed to protect you from cove id $1000.00 infections like social distancing and sanitation are notoriously difficult to to reinforce to enforce and implement so that brings another danger of preventing a surge of infections after the typhoon is over and with people are allowed to go to the evacuation centers especially since in some of the provinces there were very low transmission rates in the 1st place and we were just starting to see lockdown measures lifted as the economy tries to go back to normal and the typhoon is forecast to hit near the camp team and then later today or early to morrow what the preparations in the city. there have been massive preemptive evacuations also in
12:23 pm
manila and this is a major watch point for authorities over half of all of the covert $1000.00 infections are found in manila and in the neighboring cities and that's basically because many of those so densely populated so the overcrowded situation that you see in the evacuation centers is what you see in manila and so now authorities will have to make sure that the money that doesn't turn into a petri dish for the covert 1000 infections moving forward after the typhoon and as a dozen manila thank you very much for doubt. now let's take a look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world sudden terentia rainfall has caused a river to overflow in northern milan the flooding overnight led to blackouts in some areas while houses and basements were inundated in one part of the city the waters rose 86 centimeters in just 10 minutes authorities have now begun cleanup
