the cleaners social. history. this is from. economy into recession. and market correction.
2:01 pm
as the 1st major. struggle. is expected. it's good to have you with us germany's economy has taken its hardest hit since the 2009 financial crisis contracting 2.2 percent in the last quarter. destructions clothes shops and restaurants wiped out and sent manufacturing into a tailspin and the government says before any recovery takes hold there's more pain ahead. germany's g.d.p.
2:02 pm
data is due me even if slowly but surely the lights of the economy are being turned on again. folks like the country's biggest carmaker opened its main volves plant a few weeks ago and despite distancing measures is edging towards full capacity as well as manufacturing the services sector is returning to normal hairdressers opened last week well it's even possible now to meet friends for beer again some cafes and bars open their outdoors areas. while that suggests some hope a lot of damage has been done the german g.d.p. 1st quarter fall of 2.2 percent is a dramatic drop after years of relative stability it also means germany has now officially entered recession with 2 successive quarterly falls and the 3rd quarter will be much worse although the drop is sharp it's not as bad as analysts feared and it's better than most eurozone countries where lock downs have been longer and
2:03 pm
deeper although that is not necessarily a consolation for the german government given the state of the european economy as a whole. i believe that it will be very very important for the revival of the german economy that the european economy is recovering to its full capacity. because we are all dependent on suppliers all over europe is dependent on exports from all over europe it's in our best interests that we do that as it does with this. with berlin's tourist hot spots still eerily quiet due to travel restrictions it's a reminder that things won't fully get better anywhere in europe until they get better everywhere. except to frankfurt our correspondent joe to dylan is standing by just me it's the steepest contraction since the financial crisis bet in many ways this contraction was expected wasn't it.
2:04 pm
yes it's not a total surprise this is the 1st really private indicator of economic activity we've gotten for the 1st 3 months of the year but all of the data we've gotten from march in particular there's been there been several reports from the government it's really shown dramatic and really unprecedented to clients across most of the german economy so exports industrial production auto production on the services side restaurants hotels all of those industries have been hit really hard so on a broad level the economy is facing a lot of challenges but as as you mentioned their point this is slightly better than economists had expected the 2.2 percent decline was a little bit better than the 2.5 percent decline economists were projecting for this quarter but germany is no officially in. how much one screw did get in the quarters ahead it's going to get worse economists generally expect the 2nd quarter to be the worst for the german economy
2:05 pm
a lot of projections are sort of congregating around a 10 percent fall in economic activity in the 2nd quarter that's really going to depend on how quickly consumers get back in and just stores what how quickly people start buying cars going on vacations and things like that again but there's still a lot of has a tense that we've seen among consumers so that's really going to shape the recovery going forward just. domes of combatting germany's performance with other countries how bad is it in germany well germany is really is doing a lot better than a lot of its european peers france italy spain all have had contractions around 5 percent so in comparison the 2.2 of germany is not so bad that's in part because the the lockdowns have not been as severe and strict here but also the german government has put about a trillion euros into the economy to help stabilize business and that's really helped as well so it's a delineated front for thank you very much for the. and
2:06 pm
let's get more on this with the chief economist at bet and bag bank whole gosh meeting all go up and listen saying and even worse or lies ahead but germany's also slowly lifting restrictions is it safe to say then that the economy will soon get back on track back on track is too big a word april was probably the worst month of war and as a pretty as part of the 2nd quarter not of the 1st quarter for which we got the data today the 2nd quarter including the bad month of april will likely show it now the big drop in g.d.p. which could easily be up to 13 percent but if we look at the month rather than the quarters we will likely see that may and june are already noticeably better than april so we are not approaching normal what we are getting out of the
2:07 pm
trough gregory. what does this mean in the long term do you see a long term damage to the german economy. i don't think that this will have a lot of long term damage to the german economy most of the things that had to be switched off the shops the restaurants and many other things can be switched on again there will be significant bankruptcies say among smaller restaurants but the core of the economy say the middle east on the manufacturing companies will likely get through this sort of ok they have could take production once and if demand rebounds across the globe and at home they would simply switch on that production again the long term damage to germany shows up in higher public debt but probably not in the long term could take them and of its economic potential you did
2:08 pm
speak about significant bankruptcies do you think that the government should be doing more to help offset the damage. by and large the government is doing enough to prevent bankruptcies or to be late bankruptcies there are individual sectors where you can say a bit more new may need to be done here and there but by and large the amounts of money that is making the veda too tight households work this and companies over the current deep deep deep recession that amount of money is a huge especially by international comparison so by and large you want some fine human in germany does not need to do a lot more alarm bells not ringing while meeting from bet on bag bank thank you very much for that you're welcome staying in germany where this weekend sees the return of professional soccer the one disfigure
2:09 pm
will become the 1st major league in europe to restart following the coronavirus lockdown soccer bosses say it's more than just a sport but an economic driver as well the big leagues across europe would be watching to see how this might change conditions for germany's bundesliga. since mid march germany's football stadiums have fallen silent now the bundesliga aims to emerge from its coronavirus break with so-called closed door matches with their fans and under strict hygiene rooms the idea to get back out on the pitch as soon as possible gets anyone who rejects close door matches needn't drag their brains about whether the league will have 18 or 20 professional clubs playing in the future because in that case there won't be 20 professional clubs left once again. it's not only a make or break issue for the german league the other big european leagues are also deliberating how to emerge from
2:10 pm
a lockdown. the english premier league is the biggest money maker in european football followed by the bundesliga and by spans. for the premier league and lega t.v. revenue accounts for more than half of all income. it's slightly less than that for the blunders league but they're determined to get the ball rolling again even without spectators if that's what it takes to keep revenues flowing. when matches are aired the advertising boards around the pitch will provide another financial boost in the current crisis the upcoming weeks will show how well the new concept works but there's no doubt that the game will be a different one has seen in south korea where the caley season kicked off last week gold celebrated with social distancing. a sign of the times. are joined now by a new and beilein communications director christiane. and the bundesliga team resume their season at home 2 leaders by a minute on sunday christiane 1st of all how do you feel about finally having the
2:11 pm
bundesliga back after 2 months well it's mixed emotions quite clear of course we are happy that way to get the league started again that was a hard way was working so hard. to find ways how out come back on the other hand side of the heart of football is this really all that if you have to play without the stadiums we all know that but there's no other way at the mall and speaking about that i mean saving clubs from bankruptcy is also one of the reasons the league is restarting but as you mentioned there will be no fans is it a question of t.v. money trumping the traditional supporter. well it is a question of of the surviving we we have in the in the topic before really been talking about german economy about bankruptcies in that in shops all restaurants
2:12 pm
which are close downs and every single company who cannot work at all is in danger of cross and that's the same for all on the other hand side we don't have to forget that there is still a leak that has to be. brought to an end better on the pitch then in front of lawyers on the costs in the next years so what we try was somehow to finish a sporting season on the pitch but this is sporting season is getting underway in the middle of a pandemic and there's a number of rules that that come with that especially hygiene rules i mean for example you have. had the issue has been barred from his team's game on saturday after breaking hotel quarantine to go by toothpaste i mean how difficult is it for pleasant stuff to stick to the rules. well that's actually very difficult because
2:13 pm
the rules of the concept i'm made like 6 or 7 weeks ago when we've been in a completely different situation in all country what we see now is that the shops are opening back again restaurants will be opening this weekend because i'm back in school not everything as it was before but everyone's on the way back to normal life and yeah you have to recognize that the rules in football a much stronger now than then they are for the rest and that's what i'm going to show yesterday because he just said it told that to the public and it's just normal way like it was nothing special to him to go out and buy something but he's not allowed to because he is in football so everyone is everyone tries to stick to the rules but as we we seen yesterday are as we have seen a sum up of the week before it is difficult but yeah i mean there is
2:14 pm
always a risk in doing things but at least we want to try and want to show. this might be working or leave it there for the time being christiane when you are very lean communications director thank you very much for your time. thank you. so the bundesliga kicks off without any fans in the stadium this week and one of those should you have matches is the rule of dobby between dog and charlotte it's one of the fiercest rivalries in german sawka but what will be like for the teams loyal fans when they counted gauging their regular shows of support. this time everything is different the don't mean stadium an empty cell section no fans in the emotions the prestigious darby between top 1000000 south korea has turned into a ghost k. not a 4 nor did you feel i know hundreds of people there in the south section and you miss them you look forward to the game for weeks and you go there. and drink
2:15 pm
a beer. and now nothing without fans is like having sex on your own 6 along. in his life time bruno records has only missed 4 home games of his beloved dog he experienced his 1st dog minshull to darby 51 years ago so missing out now especially hurts. my concern for me is a number you just can't change it i'm sad and i don't know what i'll do on saturday if the weather's good i'll probably go for a walk this season is over for mange with domains opponent so everything is also different the shelter fan club distiller has only a few guests and to prevent fans from cheering too closely to one another at a shelter the goal the pubs owner might not show the darby on t.v. but there is still a bit of anticipation. it. is always highly emotional i don't sleep leading up to it and then what happens on saturday at 330 i don't
2:16 pm
know so well freak out then anyway but we have to keep our distance it's very important. to. the fans are looking forward to the 1st ghost darby in football history with mixed feelings but they all agree on one thing a darby without fans has no real value. let's take a quick look at the latest developments in the coronavirus bendemeer from around the world the johns hopkins university says the global death toll has topped 300000 there are more than 4400000 confirmed cases worldwide south sudan has been destroyed its 1st death from the coronavirus turkey's death toll from over 1000 has now passed 4000 and slovenia has called an official end to its pandemic becoming the 1st your tip in country to do so. you're watching the news still to come.

authorities have evacuated around 200000 people who now face contracting the virus at overcrowded emergency shelters due to social distancing measures the shelters can only accept half the capacity and people have to wear face masks but not everyone has one and many are trying their best to keep safe. their money now we have a lack of supplies to face mosques that's why we have started to make our own ones to avoid the spread of the virus. typhoons are a common occurrence in the philippines but this time the corona virus outbreak has made the threat even worse the national weather agency warns of potential flooding and landslides in the coming days. joining me now from manila is you don't lose on a centaurs and a different one for has already ravaged several islands off the philippines how bad is the damage. paresh government officials that i spoke to told me that

managing forward in the middle of a pandemic is an absolute nightmare we've seen the photos from the provinces where the tape 1st made landfall and we saw thousands of people whose houses were just flat and by the by the very strong winds now these are the same people who have been evacuated into temporary shelters that are overcrowded and were cited and it is already very challenging now what's going to happen to them after what they want is the big question and they won't have to go home to where they can self isolate or quarantine their actions are the people that are caught between surviving a safe one and surviving a raging pandemic as you mentioned this is a typhoon in the middle of a good run of august pandemic how are people managing. government
2:20 pm
resources are very much so overstretched and manpower and they're also very fatigued it's been 2 months since we've had a lockdown so it's been very very difficult on the side of government and also the support and also on the side of the people at home bearing down on emotional toil of the lockdown but now really heightens all of this is the typhoon people are cramped and evacuation centers where the things that are supposed to protect you from govind 1000 infections like social distancing and sanitation are notoriously difficult to to reinforce to enforce and implemented so that brings another danger of preventing a surge of infections after the typhoon is over and when people are allowed to go to leave the evacuation centers is specially since in some of the provinces there were very low transmission rates in the 1st place and we were just starting to see lockdown measures lifted as the economy tries to go back to normal and out of the
2:21 pm
typhoon is forecast to hit near the competent and then later today or early to morrow what are the preparations in the city. there's been massive preventive evacuations also in manila and this is a major watch point for authorities over half of all of the coven $1000.00 infections are found in manila and in the neighboring cities and that's basically because many less so densely populated so the overcrowded situation that you see in the evacuation centers is what you see in manila and so now authorities will have to make sure that the manila doesn't turn into a petri dish for the covert 1000 inspections moving forward after the typhoon and sometimes in manila thank you very much for that. now let's take a quick look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world sudden to wrench of rainfall has posed
