by awaits the freedoms of hong kong's special one country 2 systems and status in a joint statement today the united kingdom the united states also throwing in canada said the legislation would curtail people's liberties and dramatically erode the territories all told me. too soon i homecomings legislative council and democratic lawmakers struggled to get past security guards with a bag he said it contained a rotten plant symbolizing what he said was the decay of hong kong's rule of law and way of life. the national people's congress approved plans to proceed with laws against anything china sees as a threat to its authority over the semi autonomous region. the law would allow mainland security agencies to operate openly in hong kong pro-democracy activists now feel for their civil liberties as the one who have been arrested for

a prize fight hall called police and they were jailed for for good times in the shadow of hong kong i've never imagined to be arrested by secret police is appointed by beijing if they wish i need to study shows and as it is shenzhen quanto all beijing which would be a really terrible and like that's no differences of hong kong and china china says the new law will benefit hong kong's long term prosperity and stability the u.k. u.s. a strong and canada was swift to condemn the move we are deeply troubled about this step and we put out a joint statement and the decision now lies with china but if it follows through on this legislation and implements it it would clearly violate the autonomy of the people of hong kong. they have also been closed in germany to reprimand china over the incident it's obvious that we just cannot sit down and watch international law being broken by the chinese government and it's obvious that the implementation of

the national security legislation would exactly bring this so it's obvious that the european countries have to come together as soon as possible to talk about consequences. of these new laws that china's latest move to question anything that undermines its national security they could take effect within the next few months . here's a look now at some of the other stories are making headlines around the world the flooding in bangladesh in the aftermath of cyclonic am on has devastated tens of thousands of homes the death toll there and in neighboring india has exceeded 100 estimates suggest at least 100000 people are stranded near their homes with nowhere to go and without food or clean water walk down restrictions in the u.k. will be eased to allow groups of 6 people to meet outside prime minister boris johnson says the new rules take effect on monday people will be allowed to meet in parks in private outdoor spaces provided they stay 2 metres apart.

the london based budget airline easyjet is cutting $4500.00 jobs that's 30 percent of its workforce but it's far from being the only airline that is suffering from the coronavirus pandemic the entire industry has lost significant altitude. easyjet is another inevitable victim of the virus which has infected every single european airline of course it's the workers who are suffering most as the businesses slash labor costs to stay afloat it's not just easy jet the rest of the industry is also slashing jobs ryanair and virgin aside to cut $3000.00 each with british airways to let go of $12000.00. outside of europe the story is the same and not just tan lines but play makers too some have gone out of business others reducing staffing costs wherever they can the biggest figure to date emirates is

reportedly preparing to cut up 230000 posts some airlines including easy jet are already taking careful steps to reopen their networks so why cut jobs because damage has already been done trade body i.r. time has warned that passenger demand could take until 2024 to reach preplanned demick levels for some airlines it's too late many are already bankrupt or in life support. my colleague chris cooper from the business is here he's been following this story because we're talking about airlines cutting thousands of jobs everywhere is it all because of the pandemic or is there something else at play here there has been an underlying problem which is low prices and phasing in huge competition that the airline sector aviation sector has been seeing and these low prices have been a huge problem to some airlines particularly the ones that don't have

a fluffy fluffy financial cushion so we're talking about low cost care in a region. in italy has been troubled for years and then the pandemic hit and that was like pouring a barrel of gasoline onto this simmering ambers and we have companies going under companies going bankrupt we have companies like hoping for state aid and i think we're going to see more cases of that so let's move forward then i know there aren't a lot of people flying right now what challenges will the aviation industry be facing moving full well the 1st sounds is to survive and i think i think we're going to see more government stepping in there in order to provide essential help looking at have there be less planes in the sky in the immediate. aftermath of the pandemic about half the global fleet was grounded right now it will take until 2023 the international air travel association. to reach pretty pen demick levels and
10:13 pm
the most important issue if you look ahead will be to create an environment that people feel comfortable in to travel creating space in a confined space like in an airplane cabin that's going to be difficult so for example leaving the middle seat open as some companies have been doing that could be a way going forward in a 2nd step it will be very important to attract customers high paying customers customers buying business class that is for exam because that's where you make the money in the aviation industry however it's going to be tough because we've all been doing video conference chats for the last couple of weeks and you have to keep in mind that budgets are strained around the world even with companies and you never know whether they're going to have the money to send people having around the world and it's hard to believe that the airlines can exist by keeping the middle seat free that's just that seems almost impossible what is flying going to look like then after this pandemic well i think there's going to be less touches whether
10:14 pm
it is during check in whether it is opening the overhead bin whether it's using your entertainment system on board there's going to be more disinfecting going on at the airport with passengers with luggage you might be asked to produce a document stating that you're healthy in countries that might be less invasive there there's going to be stringent tracing just in case you know some passengers on board did contract the virus before hand if we talked about the situation aboard well these are going to be here to stay for the foreseeable future do you say smash just. don't be surprised if your cabin crew wears a face to face shield or other protective gear don't be surprised if they're don't they're not coming down the aisle to serve any food a robot might in a couple of years and when we talked. cabin design you know there have been designers working around with the seating arrangement how about a middle seat facing backward i like that idea so that there's space to put shields

in between passengers and whatever they excel that's right it but i wonder if you'll be able to hear what the person next to you is saying that it's this strange new world that's for sure sometimes you don't want to sometimes you don't like chris thank you. well the race to find a cure for the corona virus has revived interest in herbal medicines although none has so far been proven to be effective but a group of farmers in south africa is cashing in on hype surrounding the african worm would take a look. in south africa's eastern cape province farmer john abbott sally and his family are picking the herb african the war would. be. everyone. in a moment also the. something between a david oh yeah reporting from the roof of a very very important lake and. the family can pick as many as

10 backs at day. you can find the plant all over the place it has been growing here for a long time and the local farmers have been using it as a traditional medicine but now the demand is going up which is good for business here. back in the village they sell the plant for 4 years a back prices have increased along with demand for the herb there is a better place you know we like many believe warmer which can protect them from the koran of virus although there's no scientific proof i give the fed some of these because this is a good look around and. say are you question of being in one child plans for. their young parents or come flowing and pretty you feel a lucy. come clean you know the right of you know what the villagers also believe in warm words medicinal properties they've been using it for generations

even though the village has no electricity no one he has been to the doctor for years one which is prized as one of the most powerful medicinal herb people here say it clears up a stomach ache and half an hour. a fever in 3 days all those letters to get of to get a. bottle is a good medicine if you put your faith. you know if you are there and. there's also a growing demand in big cities such as port elizabeth an hour's drive from the village the corona virus is spreading rapidly and urban areas despite the lockdown . has been growing warm wood for the last year the grandmother has been taking it for flu now business is brisk glance he has sold 20 bunches today for one euro each but she doesn't believe it can protect people against corona and i was the one of the cities that didn't take them to the letter. i think made it through the day.
10:18 pm
that this is the case if you could think about it if you don't about it. i don't know but what i. wanted to show you what temp the customers been asking you as well what are your customers and i'm telling them even if you're not it could be them here but john i. feel safe from the virus his daily cup of warm which tea has a bitter taste but he reckons it's worth it one which he says helped his grandmother to survive spanish flu. because. well here in berlin a long delayed building project is finally underway the monument to freedom and unity was supposed to be finished last november but a range of problems delayed groundbreaking until today the monument will stand right in the center of the german capital now it's supposed to remind the world of what people can do when they stand together bet could be the peaceful uprising that

i should have both i say to the court before the match i should what i mean good for them i admit i did for the head that they meant this is the most important today's critical leipsic remain unbeaten since the restart and so does head to berlin behind new head coach bruno laba dia. and we've got breaking news in the last few minutes u.s. president donald trump has signed an executive order to make social media companies liable for what users say on their platforms you know currently these platforms such as facebook and twitter cannot be held accountable for user generated posts this all started earlier this week when twitter fact checked 2 of donald trump's tweets about mail in voting trump accused twitter of trying to stifle free speech and influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election twitter says the tweets had violated its rules on what it says he calls the key social issue of

voting. for more now i'm joined by even porter he's a sister professor at the school of media and public affairs at george washington university in washington d.c. and it's good to have you on the show so talk to us talk us through exactly what does this executive order do. it's good to be here the executive order to 2 things merrily. removes protections that social company social media companies have enjoyed which protected them from legal liability about the post of their users so before this executive order was signed in theory a user could post anything he or she wanted on social media in the company itself would not be responsible if the material were libel or defamatory in any way under the thinks executive order that's no longer the case now of course the executive order isn't going to be you know is going to hold up in a court exactly as it stands it's already clear that will be subjected to many
10:25 pm
aggressive legal challenges but there's a broader point here this executive order is about an aggressive or tallit ory move that the trump administration is making in response to trump in fact check on twitter it's an attack on big tech companies that the fig picture matters here more than the smaller details of the executive order when they're likely to be rolled back and let me just ask you about what this executive order that the power that it has or doesn't have i understand you know the law that basically protects social media platforms from the post that you or i would you would post that comes from the 1996 communications decency act a law that was passed by congress so the us president he doesn't have the authority to change the law only congress has that authority correct correct that's right this is a clear use or patient of congress is our an authority for that reason it will be challenged by many organizations and entities across the political spectrum already
10:26 pm
today in washington we're seeing groups from the left right and center voicing their objection to it. and the tweets in question that started this earlier this week that were flagged by twitter the u.s. president was claiming that mail in vote would ensure a rigged election in november but that's not true correct that is that is false right. there are some claims that are ambiguous perhaps. however as far as trump claims go there's no question trump was issuing a false a trump was advancing a false and and he was fact checked and many public leaders are affected constantly by aggressive fact checking organizations he didn't respond well to this fact check however and what about social media companies should they be responsible for you know untruths being distributed on their platforms particularly in political

campaigns. it's very clear that when fat checks are applied people respond across the political spectrum by becoming more accurate right so therefore creates a disincentive for politicians to spread lies and misinformation ok social media companies can in should issue fact checks in order to convince people of the truth to let people know what's what and to separate fact from fiction even unfortunately we're out of time even border we appreciate your insights tonight thank you. thank you you're watching the news the day is next.
