11:00 pm
this is g.w. newsline from berlin tonight president trump fires the 1st salvo in his battle with twitter. turned to social media giants like twitter receive the press and had to climb ability shield based on the theory that they're a neutral platform which they're not. using these social media company of stifling free speech and now he's signed an executive order challenging the protections against liability that have been the bedrock for free speech on the internet also coming up in us sitting in pain and protest following the death of
11:01 pm
a black man in police custody minneapolis has seen a 2nd night of demonstrations of looting protesters say they're angry over the death of george floor he died shortly after police arrested him on monday and condemnation of china after it approves a new security law in hong kong the decision is likely to further inflame tensions in the territory where protests escalate this week. i'm for golf it's good to have you with us u.s. president donald trump has signed an executive order that could make social media companies legally liable for what users say on their platforms at the moment platforms such as things book and twitter cannot be held accountable for user generated content. trump signed the order after twitter fact checked his tweets
11:02 pm
about mail in voting earlier this week trump accuses twitter of trying to stifle free speech and to influence the outcome of this year's presidential election twitter says the tweets had violated its rules on what it calls the keys social issue of voting. all right for more now i'm joined by even porter he's a sister professor at the school of media and public affairs at george washington university in washington d.c. and it's good to have you on the show so talk to us talk us through exactly what does this executive order do. it's good to be here the executive order has 2 things naturally it. removes protections that social companies social media companies have enjoyed which protected them from legal liability about the post of their users so before this executive order was signed in theory a user could post anything he or she wanted on social media and the company itself
11:03 pm
would not be responsible if the material were libel or defamatory in any way under the executive order that's no longer the case now of course the executive order isn't going to be you know is going to hold up in a court exactly as it stands it's already clear that will be subjected to many aggressive legal challenges but there's a broader point here this executive order is about an aggressive retaliatory move that the trump administration is making in response to trump in fact check on twitter it's an attack on big tech companies that the faith picture matters here more than the smaller details of the executive order but they're likely to be rolled back and let me just ask you about what this executive order that the power that it has or does it have i understand you know the law that basically protects social media platforms from the post that you were on would you would post that comes from the 1996 communications decency act a law that was passed by congress so the us president he doesn't have the authority
11:04 pm
to change the law only congress has that authority correct correct that's right this is a clear usurpation of congress is our enough already for that reason it will be challenged by many organizations and entities across the political spectrum already today in washington we're seeing groups from the left right and center voicing their objection to it. and the tweets in question that started this earlier this week that were flagged by twitter the u.s. president was claiming that mail in vote with ensure a rigged election in november but that's not true correct that is that is false right. there are some claims that are ambiguous perhaps. however as far as trump claims go there's no question trump was issuing a false a trump was advancing a falsehood and he was fact checked many public leaders are
11:05 pm
a fact check constantly by aggressive fact checking organizations he didn't respond well to this fact check however and one of belt's social media companies should they be responsible for you know untruths being distributed on their platforms particularly in political campaigns. it's very clear that when fat checks are applied people respond across the political spectrum by becoming more accurate right so that therefore creates a disincentive for politicians to spread lies and misinformation ok social media companies can in should issue fact checks in order to convince people of the truth to let people know what's what and to separate that fiction's unfortunately we're out of time isn't border we appreciate your insights tonight thank you and there will be more about president trump's executive order that's coming up later in the business when we go to the u.s.

a threat to its authority over the semi autonomous region the law would allow mainland security agencies to operate openly in hong kong pro-democracy activists now feared for their civil liberties as the one who had been arrested for prizefight hall called police and they reach out for you times in the shadow of hong kong i've never imagined to be arrested by secret police is appointed by beijing. and it's other shows and as it is shenzhen want to show all beijing which would be a really terrible and i guess no differences of hong kong and china. china says the new law will benefit hong kong's long term prosperity and stability in the u.k. u.s. a strong and canada was swift to condemn the move we are deeply troubled about this step and we put out a joint statement and the decision now lies with china but if it follows through on this legislation and implements it it would clearly violate the autonomy of the

people of hong kong they have also been calls in germany to reprimand china over the incident obvious that we just cannot sit down and watch international law being broken by the chinese government and it's obvious that the implementation of the national security legislation would exactly bring this so it's obvious that the european countries have to come together as soon as possible to talk about consequences. of these new laws of china's latest move to question anything that undermines its national security they could take effect within the next few months . or the london based budget airline easyjet is cutting $4500.00 jobs that's 30 percent of its workforce but it's far from being the only airline suffering from the coronavirus pandemic the entire industry has lost significant altitude easyjet is another inevitable victim of the virus which has infected every single
