slides from berlin anti-racism protests spread across america the u.s. national guard assented to minneapolis as anger spills over into violence told the death of a black man in police custody earlier this week. president trump risks inflaming those tensions with a new tweet he threatens when the looting that starts the shooting starts twitter labels the tweet as glorified violence also coming out.

farmers resort to music to scare off locusts the region's worst plague in decades is also fueling fears about food security in neighboring pakistan. the transports its faith and a voluntary track to trace out as a relaxed coronavirus restrictions but critics say the app has major shortfalls. i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us some 500 national guard troops have been deployed to the u.s. city of minneapolis after a 3rd straight night of on rast protests have rocked the city since a black man died in police custody earlier this week and those protests have now spread to other cities including phoenix denver and memphis but the death of george floyd has left many apple less. particular reeling with scenes of violence and

anger i riots across minneapolis for the 3rd night protesters stormed a police station forcing the officers inside to flee they want justice for george floyd who died in police custody over to the fiction. you know where no matter how we get a conviction you don't really care what the meat was that we wanted to reach with the manicotti. oh and if the damage and looting the u.s. president weighed in with a series of tweets the u.s. leader branded the protest as thugs and criticize the mayor's handling of the crisis the mayor hit back donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis we are strong as hell is it's a difficult time period yes but you better be damn sure that we're going to get through this. the day before had begun peacefully demonstrators gathered to mark

george floyd's death chanting his last words. it was a reaction to the graphic video that captured the final minutes of floyd's life you know i know i was. you know with a trust in police at rock bottom the national guard has been deployed in minneapolis but the army's presence on the street is unlikely to quell the community's sense of injustice. earlier we spoke to our correspondent stephanie minds about the situation in minneapolis police at least there where we are here is actually on fire if the camera can pan to the side here you see a building on fire but that's not the only one of course there's about 5 or 6 buildings here including the police precinct building precinct 3 building on fire behind me as well as a tobacco store and
3:04 pm
a liquor store people here are still angry very angry and they're saying all most of them at least saying that whatever happens right now here rioting not protesting is actually justified because authorities and the elites need to understand in their words that this is the end they are sick and tired of things happening as they did to george floyd's and this is the result however i have to say we also have talked to protesters who say and i call them protesters who say that this is nothing to do with the protest anymore this is rioting and looting and we have witnessed this here ok let's get some perspective on the story we have jessica taylor with us she's an artist writer and host of black in berlin that's a series on race politics and race relations jessica thanks for joining us 1st of all you originally come from the u.s. so what do you think when you see these images of protests in many cities across the country. i am in deep grieving and mourning now
3:05 pm
the global black community and. protest some would say violent protests i think are a physical manifestation of the systems that need to be torn down the systems that need to be disrupted we need long term systemic change when i see. the criticism on looting. the us president when i see the criticism on the. news outlets i would love to have a conversation about the looting that's been going on during the pandemic by america's billionaires $400000000000.00 richer during this pandemic but that's not something that is the spotlight is on so you know it needs to be systemic change jessica are we talking really here about justice for george floyd this case or is this really about the deeper racial inequalities that you see in a place like minneapolis. definitely and all over the united states and
3:06 pm
globally the last month has been a nightmare i'm on our prairie murdered on february 23rd shon read may 6th briana taylor made 12 george floyd may 25th just last night i heard about a transplant man in florida talking that day murdered by police that was just yesterday so you know it's been a nightmare after nightmare trauma after trauma this of course is you know a long legacy of racism and demanded he in the u.s. what is your message to people in positions of power and what is the discussion that needs to take place with the global black community to calm tensions right now . i don't know if we need to count tensions actually i think the tensions are exactly where that he'd be i think that the system as it was designed is working perfectly we have people that are being murdered black people that are
3:07 pm
being murdered and then outrage and the outrage over that outrage and the cycle just continues and you know news outlets in interviews like these. the cycle continues we are calling on institutions to change their policies we have the university of minnesota that just ended its contracts with the minnesota police department no longer support them at their football games this is a small but necessary step in the fight against institutional forces of white supremacy so we're calling on institutions to do this very necessary work jessica taylor artist writer host of black and brown and thank you so much for sharing your insights with us thank you for having me. and president trump's latest response to the protests minneapolis has prompted twitter to flack a recent post for violating twitter rules against glorifying violence and his tweets trump said these thugs are dishonoring the memory of george floyd and i won't let that happen he added the that the military is ready to respond and said
3:08 pm
when the looting starts the shooting starts trumps latest a controversial tweet comes as the platform moved to fact check previous to it's the president now says twitter is biased against him he signed an executive order that he says is aid to checking social media as power to censor communication. he calls it protecting free speech for the social media companies say it's a politicized approach to law donald trump's latest executive order is designed to strip social media companies of their existing immunity when it comes to content published on their platform. and choices that twitter makes one chooses to suppress blacklists shadow. or editorial decisions pure and simple their editorial decisions in those moments twitter seems to be a neutral public platform 'd and they become and they're with a viewpoint and i think we can say that about others also this week twitter put
3:09 pm
fact check labels on 2 of the president's tweets that had unsubstantiated claims about voting by mail in the u.s. twitter said it decided to do so because the content broke its rules on the key issue of voting trump it back and accuse twitter of trying to interfere in the 2020 presidential election and stuff for free speach. the business and technology sector is the order could code freedom of speech across the internet while legal experts are warning that it conflicts with the existing law which owing the congress not the president can change it really is a complete mess reading of section $230.00 it takes. a law that has been interpreted time and time again very very broadly by multiple federal circuit courts and just says i'm replacing all of this with my own interpretation that i have no right to give about how to interpret this or a law and so no it's really not going to have any staying power in
3:10 pm
a court i may really is kind if you have a piece of rhetoric of honor that means the order will likely be challenged in court ahead of the november presidential election. our intel 10 is looking into the story for us hi erin we heard a legal analyst there talking about section $230.00 it's called the legal backbone of the internet why well section $230.00 basically establishes the legal framework that social media platforms used to deal with content online basically what it says is that their platforms not publishers that means they're not legally responsible for the content that users upload they have the ability to vet it and check it if it crosses certain boundaries into hate speech into extreme sexism calls for terrorism violence etc etc but the end of the day they face new no legal blowback from what users are uploading now this is actually been for companies like twitter and facebook a great thing because of the last 20 years they've been. able to flourish and this
3:11 pm
law is a fair environment is letting anybody post anything that they want to incredibly quickly but starting in 2016 you start to see a lot of calls of people saying we really need to address this section because they've been seen disingenuous political actors international groups terrorist groups hate groups increasingly using social media to radicalize people and actually sway the pendulum of public discussion to a different direction and ironically trump is one of the politicians has benefited most from this situation i mean the social media is especially twitter gives him an ability to speak directly to his supporters and by addressing this in changing how section 22 or 230 works it could actually force these companies to start vetting his speech is which is what he's trying to prevent as a moment so what is he trying to accomplish by by this move then well basically i mean as we saw there in the piece he doesn't want social media is just specifically twitter to take a look at his content and say look this is either factual or it's not factual unfortunately trump does have
3:12 pm
a habit of making some rather erroneous claims on twitter and it's a way he gets his base fired up and he doesn't want to social media to actually look at his the content of his posts and decide whether or not it's true or not because i mean. that the end of the day that's what the mainstream media does and he's been using social media to bypass that for years so this seems to be a shot across the bow to kind of force their hand and i really think at the end of the day you have to see this in the context of the election cycle i mean trump is in a very contentious election campaign with joe biden right now he's down in many swing states and he's also facing extreme pressure from the mainstream media because of his handling of the coded 1000 crisis which depended upon the social media right now is really depended on them to get their message out but unfortunately by changing section 2030 if it actually goes through this could actually go back in the in the other direction because it could cost american jobs if these companies need to retool how they do business it could also force them to vet his content before it goes online which is exactly what he wants to promote the president just
3:13 pm
quickly how likely do you think it is that this executive order could actually go into effect i wouldn't exactly expect it in the near term because i mean at the end of the day as we heard in the piece there legal scholars don't think this would actually pass muster then there's also the fact that these companies would take years to actually figure out ways to change their business model to become conform with this new governmental push and then also you have to realize it would take one to 2 years based on the research for this actually to take effect and that would place a squarely in the next term either of the trump presidency or of joe biden and you know i really wouldn't expect that this seems to be more a case of in my opinion very strong arm tactics from the white house purely for this current election cycle. erin thank you so much for your analysis thank you. now india and pakistan are facing their worst plague of locusts in decades authorities in both countries fear of food security crisis and even as pakistan struggles with the economic fallout of the coronavirus lock down its agricultural

sector says the insect infestation poses a greater challenge. these tiny insects far from fossil is feasting in swarms of millions they're now threatening to out pakistan's population at a critical time. you've got to look at is several times more dangerous than the coronavirus i would say it is a 100 times a 1000 times more dangerous than corona when you are fighting against coronavirus you had crops grains vegetables things to eat no one went to bed hungry. while pakistan's economy is reeling from the ongoing coronavirus lockdown the un's food and agriculture organization estimates agricultural losses from locusts could surpass 5000000000 dollars this year authorities have set up a national response team to assist 61 districts of the country that are under threat. june. barely able to say after the 1st and 2nd

weeks of june going to be critical for us because the locusts that are now in iraq and in moscow will start heading towards pakistan or us could give them. to combat that we have stationed helicopters in various doesn't regions that fall along the way. station. in the meantime desperate farmers waiting for help have had to take matters into their own hands trying to drive the locusts away with no use. in neighboring india it may sound like a party but there's nothing to celebrate as the country struggles with the same problem devastated crops a further threat to the region which is also struggling with many anomic costs of lockdown. here teams are scrambling to stop the swarms before breeding can take place during the monsoon season which begins in july. right now to some

frankfurt for us high only so v.w. is putting even more money into china as we heard it's coming at a time where there's a lot of tension with beijing politically so is this a good move by folks back and. well long term it seems to fit a volkswagen strategy after all her birthdays to see old folks wagon worldwide has called out that he is wanting to make a volkswagen the world's number one electric car maker and also batteries which are also part of this investment decision to be a key technological component that volkswagen is good at so putting money into china putting money into batteries into your cars goes along with the strategy and don't forget china is the world's largest auto market the german market is tiny in comparison so regionally also seems to make sense from volkswagens corporate perspective if we look elsewhere in the auto industry at the french carmaker rayno

is announced that it is cutting $16000.00 jobs but the problems there really are deeper than the current of ours prices aren't they. yes they are and you know really the the problems that are there were already being addressed this week when the company renault with its alliance partners and sentiments of issue presented a new strategy and there it was all on the table everything that was going wrong at the no these past year it's really hard thing also back to the days of the ones legendary carlos cohn too many people making too few cars earning money with that renault wants to change this. drastically part of the project is to cut production and concentrate on the most profitable cars and there are no management obviously sees the need to slash a lot of jobs in that context only barks for us in frankfurt going to talk to. france. approved the track and tracing out as the country continues to loosen its

the french want their social life back. they want all the stores open. the app provides the needed safety for the newly won freedom. in some countries like china south korea and india coronavirus tracking apps are mandatory but european countries like france are making them voluntary. that affects my life a bad idea in my opinion. this is if it's any better and i think it might be a good idea but unfortunately not everyone can use an app. the most vulnerable people the elderly won't be downloading the air because they wouldn't know how to use the tools so. critics point out that the french and german apps won't be able to communicate with each other when the german app launches in mid june there's a lot of traffic between the 2 countries france is

a hit. this spring is normally a quieter time at giraffe manor that's when the property owners start to get the 12 bedroom house ready for the busy season that starts in june but this june will be different the borders remain closed and visitors who had booked a room sometimes years in advance are not allowed to visit the famous house managers of the manor say business is down dramatically 88 percent of incoming guest postponed their trip 12 percent cancelled. we've been asked to be at home because we have no clients which is quite unfortunate but there's nothing we do you can do if you have no clients so most of the staff have been at home during this time of co fit the manner has been running on a minimal staff for months but now giraffe manor wants to try a new business model for its reopening plan appealing to locals in nairobi who normally wouldn't be able to book a ticket at the posh hotel and animal center. well fortunately for giraffe

manor we're in a city where we have a big base of people who still like to travel and experience these sort of things so we have a reopening plan in place right now and we're hoping to welcome some of the residents throughout the city who've maybe not been able to enjoy it before because we do experience such high occupancy. travel restrictions mean that only people living in metro nairobi can make the trip but giraffe manor is hoping that after months of lockdowns that it's lush and serene grounds and of course endangered and friendly inhabitants will appeal to local visitors. 2 weeks after the men's the women's went to sleep it is now also restarting its season the 1st games will take place on friday and saturday after a 3 month suspension due to the pent up the players from the 12 club states with individual workouts until they could resume teen training. germany's

female footballers are back in business well women's leagues in england and elsewhere have scrapped their seasons the bundesliga will restart its 30th campaign . the i think it sends a very big message to the world and not just the women's football world that women's football is back. but the restart does have its issues 1st of all it costs money mandatory coronavirus tests are financed by the f.a. but the clubs will have to pony up for additional expenses like hotels and security personnel and their t.v. revenues are peanuts compared to the men's league just $67000.00 euros per club the biggest source of income is sponsorship money that gives an advantage to established clubs like buying munich and perennial champions false board. i. want to make clear that anyone who's not prepared to take the next steps will find
3:25 pm
it very very difficult to play in the women's split just league. i think it would be difficult for exclusively women's football clubs to win multiple titles because of their financial situation now for. smaller clubs like a season which has reached the cup final twice could be left behind they're dependent on local companies which themselves are in trouble because of the coronavirus crisis they may have to reduce their financial support to the clubs or end it all together the clubs cannot expect any help from the f.a.a. either. as a registered association specifically a nonprofit registered association we cannot give or donate anything to the business. operations of the individual clubs without compensation just isn't sized to leave even turbin a potsdam can no longer make waves in the bluntest league the club won 6 league titles and 2 champions league trophies but those successes are unlikely to ever be
