but some becoming increasingly violent protesters have had it in for the south in the battle even at the white house i was. at 1st we crossed to the streets of minneapolis where we joined correspondent stefan stephan 2 hours since the curfew came into place what's happening i have to tell you something really surprising is happening after the curfew was initiated 2 hours ago and we heard a loud speaker announcement from police from national guard that anybody who is not dispersing immediately is risking arrest they just left disappeared and maybe that was a strategy or maybe it wasn't but it is one of the quietest nights in the last 3 nights i would say here in minneapolis at least in street where we are at this now

infamous precinct 3 police building. the protest of the protesters have to spurs and the national guard and the police is nowhere to be seen but there's also no curfew because everybody is still on the streets. steffen is there any sign at ole any hint that police whiting somewhere else or the national god ready to confront or china they attacked at this point. it's a good possibility that they actually really change their tactic i mean they what they did is they really retreated really really quickly for the long run of. your. problems. and we want to take this as well if you. don't want a little fact if we can see why are they to gain on a guarantee of safety stephanie thank you guys want to have to move on. but

i'm ok thank you very much this happen sometimes you know there's a lot of i'll go all involved here to. florida liquor stores always the 1st to be let's say visited by some protesters and they're still a good amount of anger and frustration with protesters here there's no doubt now we're fine again this is this sometimes happens stephan it just goes to paint the picture that that we're getting from the other side of the will here that the streets at the moment. do not have police said there's no one in charge that could feel same place but there's no one effectively enforcing it we just sort with you just now you are absent you're absolutely right you're absolutely right there is no curfew i don't know i can't attest to what the governor was thinking when he announced that there will be a curfew maybe somebody told him along after he did this that this might. poking the bear more than it comes things down and then he changed his mind and local

authorities gave probably command to retreat for security. authorities here but there's no police and i'm telling you. the protesters themselves are really. almost stunned lie. where's the police where did they all go they were asking us if we found any police or national guard and we have to say no we haven't seen any either so there is a no curfew b. there's no police and there's 3 no national guard here and it almost seems like the protesters are more really to confront the police than the other way around. stephanie incredible scenes on the streets of minneapolis they say it often but we made it stateside thanks for your reporting. well chicago native doubly report especially given joins me now stacey it started in minneapolis but this really is spreading across the u.s.

now absolutely the arrest of one of the officers involved in the killing of george floyd hasn't calmed the anger the desperation that people are feeling across the u.s. so you're looking at protests from new york and dallas and washington d.c. and they're all demanding change and they're all demanding more than what they what they've gotten they say that this arrest of this one officer is not enough and it comes really it's from the desperation as i mentioned that people felt there is not a person of consciousness that watched that man in my on the ground with police officers meet and his neck for 8 minutes and not feel something and so what activists are saying and demonstrators are saying is that the only justice is for all of these police officers to be arrested and charged with murder. there are a lot of people on the streets in solidarity stacey but it seems like we've been

here before many times what has actually changed along the journey. i think that depends on who you ask like you said i'm from chicago so when i talk to activist church elders that i've known all of my life and have been fighting for civil rights before i was born they will say nothing is change they will tell you that during this the sixty's it was a coup klux klan and hanging people from trees and now it's the police being able to kill with without punishment and and so they're watching this and they're wondering what's next when is america going to be fed up when is everybody else going to be fed up and this is where we are seeing a little bit of change because usually and recent years we've seen protests whether it was michael brown and missouri it was mostly black people protest. and now you're seeing a diverse group of people and this is what activists have been saying for years that nothing is going to change in the united states until white people white
5:08 am
allies who benefit from white privilege use that privilege and say look enough is enough we need to make america safe for everybody and so when we see this mix of people all demonstrators are hoping activists are hoping that this means that the united states is ready to make some substantive change what about the frustration that we're saying do you think it's solely related to police brutality or does the economy play a pot here where in the middle of a pandemic and perhaps we're talking about the individual economic situation of these people on the streets well that's true what we learned with the coronavirus is that the disparity between black and white united states is bigger than a lot of people even thought there's a huge chasm there and but you remove the shackles of institutional racism where black people are not their skin is not weaponized by police and united states where they're not presumed guilty and have to prove their innocence where police killings aren't justified by victimizing the person who's been killed by vilifying them i

think that when you change all of these things at least this is what activists are telling me that the united states will go and the right direction and this is why you're seeing all of these people protesting across the country still is incredible to get those thanks so much. the president trump says the u.s. is to cut ties with the world health organization over its handling of the coronavirus truck mine tines the u.s. is withdrawing support from the w.h.o. because of what he calls china's total control of the organization president uses chinese officials of your ignoring their reporting obligations and pressuring the agency to mislead the world when the outbreak again. and president trump also says the u.s. will be cutting more international ties this time eliminate the special treatment for hong kong because of new chinese security legislation that gives beijing more

say in the running of the territory china has moved ahead with the ball which critics say will be used to quash political dissent britain also raised concerns about hong kong's autonomy at the un security council while the european union also joined in the criticism warning that beijing was in breach of its international commitments. the view of hong kong from above is stunning but what is happening in the city itself is straining e.u. relations with china the blow to civil rights and the heavy handed approach by police. for a minister's expressed concern but took no action at least for now. continue trying to put. pressure on the chinese aside it is people and he said that he didn't think sanctions were the right way to solve the problems with china the e.u. is being cautious leaders hope delicate negotiations now underway will give

european companies more access to the huge chinese market brussels would also like to bring beijing on board in climate talks a summit with the chinese government set for september should finalize these deals renewed unrest in hong kong has led to calls for the summit scheduled in germany to be cancelled berlin disagrees. you might also come to the opposite conclusion and say that it is especially important for the european union to sit unified and cohesive at the table and be able to also discuss the uncomfortable topics. but it's not clear whether the e.u. has the clout to put pressure on china for beijing taking more control over hong kong is a key issue. now while society's oldest members are often saying is the most vulnerable in the coronavirus process some are proving that there are exceptions inspired by the fundraising walk of british veteran tom moore and not
