in the southern states of georgia protesters in atlanta faced off with police outside the head offices of media company c n n the clashes prompted this plea from the mayor. this is chaos a protest has purpose you are just pricing our city you are discoursing the life of george lloyd and every other person who has been killed in this country we are better than this. but it's the way that george floyd and many other african-american men have died in police custody that has fueled this public outrage the officer who restrained george floyd has been charged with 3rd degree murder. but that isn't enough for these protesters in minneapolis or the victims' relatives 'd. who do they want the 3 other officers at the scene to face murder charges to. authorities impose

a curfew in minneapolis to try and calm the tensions after days of unrest but protesters along with looters and arsonists defied it. in washington demonstrators rallied outside the white house president trump condemned the violence that has accompanied protests nationwide you know our situation. happened in annapolis to just send further into lawless anarky and chaos and we understand that very well that trump promised to speed up the investigation into george floyd's death but the public is demanding more than just another probe into another death of an african american in police custody it's one thing for institutional change. from almost every report to arran tilton joins me now aaron thanks for joining me so this started obviously in minneapolis but this is fast approaching across the country yes it is this is the protests

surrounding george floyd's death or actually kind of ignited a fire of anger throughout the united states were seen by when protests crop up in many large urban areas and even to a certain extent around the world i mean last night in berlin i saw a group of protestors actually walking down the street trying to wait raise awareness about the death of george floyd so this is really quickly becoming an international issue it's really definitely hit a nerve sadly this is not the 1st instance of a controversial police killing an unarmed black man black man we've seen it many times before several times even this year has anything on estate's really changed well to be honest it's hard to talk about individual police departments united states is a massive country but if you're looking at it from kind of a bird's eye perspective it doesn't really seem a lot is changing i mean time and time again we're seeing video coming out of young black men losing their lives to police officers as a result the police action and not really much coming of it and you know this isn't just something that's cropped up with the advent of the camera phone i mean we've
6:05 pm
been seeing these type of incidents for decades in the united states i mean think of the 1902 l.a. race riots which were kicked off when 4 police officers were acquitted of beating rodney king and go even further back i mean the some of the lynchings that we saw in the fifty's and sixty's or even moving back to slavery i mean this is a problem the united states has been grappling with for. hundreds and hundreds of years you know i'm a white kid from iowa i'm not going to pretend to actually know what it's like to be black in the united states but it's easy to see how frustrating it can be when a group of people see themselves constantly disadvantaged or actually having their rights taken away and having their life taken away by men in uniform and you know i hate to read a quote out on the air but i think i'm going to my the chief of police of my home town police department just released this statement regarding this video and i think it sums it up perfectly he wrote this is a man with 30 years on the police force a couple of days ago i saw a video that shook me to my core and doesn't require any additional information i
6:06 pm
don't need to know what other video is out there i don't need to know what prompted the encounter i don't need to know what happened in the moments before the video started i don't need to know the personal history of anyone in the video everything i need to know is there in the video a man george floyd was not treated like a human being lost his life another man recklessly took that life with him parents and difference that 2nd man or uniform what we're seeing here is the frustration and anger of a group of people who see their humanity constantly taken away from them by people wearing uniforms and unfortunately if you know the history of united states this is been going on for 400 years yeah well this is obviously more than just i mean obviously the police brutality is a massive part of it but it isn't just about placed brutality against black americans i mean communities in the us suffering black communities are suffering disproportionately so even during at the moment with a chronic virus they're being hit hard to them white community so i mean what does
6:07 pm
a car the economy have to do with this does it play a role oh i definitely mean it has to be if you look at it i mean as i said before i'm a white kid from iowa but that i was automatically means my socio economic outcome of the united states are a lot better than a lot of my black countrymen i mean at the end of the day i have access to better education to better jobs to better. i was in market than they do i also don't necessarily have to worry about being the targets of police action as much as they do i mean once it is that i was reading recently there's kind of shocked me was the fact that the average wealth of a black family is 90 percent lower than a white family and a lot of it has to do with housing that they can't get access to bank loans to transport money on to the next generation so of course socio economic conditions are going to play a role with this frustration that's building because at the end of the day people are seeing that if you're born black in the united states you don't have the same abilities you don't have the same advantages as if you're born like i was in
