this is deja vu news live from berlin another night of protests and on the arrest in the united states. there are c. demonstrations and widespread looting in a number of american cities following the death of george floyd in police custody for a week ago today. and in minneapolis a truck drives through a crowd of protesters was this deliberate our reporter was there when it happened plus one of the world strictest lockdowns is used as south africa and temps to

revive its battered economy. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program protests across of united states have entered their 7th day with demonstrations in scores of cities after the brutal death of george floyd an unarmed african-american man in police custody one week ago a memorial gathering for him took place in minneapolis on sunday as the national guard was deployed in minnesota and other states curfews were extended but broken in major cities as police struggle to contain the situation the coronavirus pandemic has not stopped hundreds of thousands from taking to the streets several people have died have made the rest of the u.s. president donald trump has slammed state governors as quote weak she's demanding tougher. on the protesters. america is burning
6:02 pm
for 6 nights in a row anger flooded streets across the deeply divided country. this scale of civil unrest has not been seen here in decades. in george floyd's home state protesters marched against systemic racism and police brutality. all these voices are here because the same thing keeps happening over and over again it's the new lynching you know and it's new coded language in a way that our president represents himself in and has a following of k.k.k. members you know all this stuff. across the country a wave of anger has been leashed. i think we're at a tipping point to be honest with you i think that. i think this is what happens when you have. hundreds of years of oppression. hundreds of

years of peaceful protests that seemingly accomplish nothing we have been discriminating it's my entire life so like i'm used to the trayvon martin i'm used to that on my arteries so i'm just tired i'm tired of the narrative i'm tired of the hash tag right there we're all still scenes of unity as officers showed their solidarity with the protesters as well so i am sure going to have a right to. know this is a talk right now. but in washington tensions spiked outside the white house as the president blamed left extremists and infiltrators for the on breast. radical left criminals and others all throughout our country and throughout the world will not be allowed to set communities a place. we won't let it happen. it harms those
6:04 pm
who have the least. but some experts say there is also evidence of far right extremists stoking the violence the president's response has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle with some calling for a measured response to the crisis. and during the protest on sunday in minneapolis a truck drove through a crowd of protesters on a highway overpass miraculously it appears that only one person was slightly injured. mood blaring this is the moment a truck barreled into a large crowd of protesters in minneapolis who somehow managed to get out the way. the highway was packed with demonstrators at the time they then swarm the truck and try to get at the driver. police used tear gas to disperse the crowd that had surrounded the truck. t.w.
6:05 pm
correspondent stephanie was reporting from the scene eyewitnesses said they saw one woman injured it's we were doing a peaceful protest on the bridge then a similar came through going like 40 or 50 miles an hour trying to run us off to caucasian man blown away or going to hit a girl stop because all of our people jumped on to try to rip him out trying to get our he kept going we returned however i reversed and almost hit somebody then our people jumped on him i mean it's instinct so he got through so you say he hit one person only and nobody else was hurt no one person one person only that's amazing how is that possible and everybody will start moving everybody started scattering and they're good i got her we had one we only had one vehicle in the whole thing and we put her in a truck and we drove straight to the hospital. officials say the driver was treated in hospital for injuries he suffered when he was pulled from the cab he's now in custody and has been charged with assault. and for more let's bring in right now
6:06 pm
political journalist and writer for political nightly based in austin texas a welcome to the program and we'd like to ask you because while protesters are on the streets the u.s. president has been tweeting where is the leadership in the u.s. right now. well it's absent remember this is a president who came to office stoking racial divisions and racial tensions and we've seen that in this crisis as well of these he spoke briefly on saturday in ahead of the space x. launch but then largely absent on sunday of mostly tweeting things out there's a big debate debate right now within the white house over whether the president should address the nation right now he's been largely out of sight most feeding his last address in march actually was filled with errors and the white house to walk a lot of things back though he hasn't really been stepping up to this role as as
6:07 pm
a unite and if you know this is the time when people are into a lot of stress there's there's a lot of division a lot of tension and people are looking to this president or normally look to presidents to unite the country and that's not the role that this president has and also stoking that tension there's a lot of talk that that we have both the far right right supremacy and the far left groups like like anti for example stirring up violence how does it look from your vantage point. you know remember that this is a president who after the charlottes the white supremacist protests that they're good on both sides so you know we've seen over and over again just moral equivalence you know at the moment i think the protests have and in most major cities across the u.s. and they've largely been peaceful and largely folks who are frustrated by police violence we've seen some scenes of looting in some scenes of of rioters but you know the president i think benefits from creating this atmosphere that seems that
6:08 pm
sort of suggest that things are much more violent than they are because you can come in and see him like he's enforcing some law and order here and i think by blaming the leftist protesters he's ignoring the reality that there's actually a lot of peaceful protesters and people who are just normal people who are just frustrated by we. we have a combination on the streets right now coronavirus loss of jobs the desperate financial situation that many people find themselves and also playing a role on what are our racial tensions that are so deep in the united states i mean this is quite a cocktail isn't it. absolutely and you know i think what we're seeing now with the killing of george boyd in the protests and it's what black americans have been dealing with or while and in this coronavirus crisis in the u.s. black americans are disproportionately affected and that's where a lot of reasons there's been
6:09 pm
a systemic inequality in our health care system that led black american having less access to care now in this crisis even less access to care to get treated for those endemic and and then also joblessness is his black americans particularly hard in this country and so you're absolutely right it's a pretty powerful article there's a lot of frustration and and i think these multiple prices have just sort of shown the inequality and if and then i mean you have when you're. joining us from politico from austin texas thank you thank you. journalists in the united states have not escaped police efforts to control ongoing and widespread on rest sparked by the death of george floyd some police tactics have been especially aggressive as our own correspondent in minneapolis learned over the weekend shift on zealanders was that i was hit with

a rubber bullet by this 1st incident taking place there are the model for our. training and authorities saying hold you over bullets were in the middle of a live shot that was on saturday night in a separate incident on sunday that you're watching right now he was forced to flee the scene he's reporting from one police gave him a quote last order to leave the area. there we are press so in experience which is hardly unique. reporter william no it is joining us here on the set with more on this unsettling trend what more can you tell us it's unsettling a scary for everyone protesters police alike as we've seen protests going in more than 100 cities all around the country and this was not unique to what happened to our colleague in minneapolis or to c.n.n. team also minneapolis it's happening many other cities hundreds of kilometers away
6:11 pm
from the original protest here we can just show one example of a local news news broadcaster in louisville kentucky nothing to do with minneapolis itself but protests happening there and just a warning that some of these images may be disturbing for some of our audience ok. are you ok. with the local reporter being directly fired upon with rubber bullets or pepper sprayed by a police officer there in louisville kentucky now it's been said that that police officers been put on has been reassigned pending investigation this is the police chief has said they don't have orders to fire on the media but also said they hopefully they hope that people understand that that might happen if the media are involved in a crowd where pepper spray or pepper bullets are fired and of course the local the local broadcaster there saying there's absolutely no justification to be fired on by journals under any circumstances this is the we're seeing all around the country
6:12 pm
the u.s. press freedom tracker this is by reporters without borders and other press freedom organisations they've documented more than 100 incidents involving reporters where there assaults whether it's vandalism whether it's pepper spraying bullets as we've seen different kinds of assaults should be noted not only police sometimes protesters are attacking police as well a taxi journalist as well but this is foremost about police. going after reporters police in various cities saying sometimes apologizing sometimes saying this is just what happens in a protest. but. the press freedom tracker showing us that some of these attacks are targeted what's behind it behind it short answer donald trump we've seen his antagonist antagonizing nature against the press stoking a lot of anger a lot of fear a lot of hatred towards members of the media but we sure a member of this goes far beyond goes back way before donald trump and i say it is a long history with police brutality just looking
6:13 pm
a journalist were arrested in 2014 in the ferguson unrest after another black man was killed in police custody 20042008 at republican national conventions police reporters got caught up in protest arrests as well so there's a long history here of reporters also getting targeted also having the 1st amendment rights getting violated just as many protesters do as well william know a good cause reporting thank you. now professional athletes past and present from around the world have joined with protesters in the u.s. over the death of george floyd while many athletes have spoken out others have remained quiet they potential rift in the sporting world as competition resumes in a number of sports. formula one driving champion lewis hamilton sees this as a moment for his fellow drivers to speak out in support of people like him people of color he posted i see those of you who are staying silent some of you to biggest
