and property of their residents and i will deploy the united states military and quickly solve the problem for them. earlier we spoke to a reporter melissa chan about the reactions to trump's announcement in the u.s. a lot of people had to go back into the history books to see when the last time this rarely used law was invoked and just for viewers who don't understand i'm you have seen a lot of armed armed officers on the streets across the united states and there is a difference between the national guard though in which governors are in control of versus what president donald trump is suggesting which is taking active duty military who have been working in afghanistan and iraq and putting them out in the domestic united states and i think depending on which media organization you watch if you're an american watching

a lot of fox news you will definitely support what president trump has done and her has has threatened to do in terms of looking at all the looting that happens in the evening and feeling like there does need to be so called law and order and of course if it's a rorschach test if you are another kind of american what you see is that the president has just threatened the american people with sending american soldiers to treat them like any combatants. well the medical examiner from minneapolis has released the autopsy report for george floyd it shows his death was homicide by suffocation at the site of his death members of his family paid tribute to him with a call for unity and peace. charities floyd crumbles under the weight of tremendous loss this is where for nearly 9 minutes his brother george begged for his life and for his mother under the weight of an officer on his neck the medical examiner is calling his death

the us fueled by anger and desperation people are demanding black americans be treated with the same humanity as whites. i can't i can't disappoint you with that . but this is why. the americans supporting our children. derek chapman since dismissed from the police was charged floyd herder on friday but his brother says that's not enough. he wants all of the officers involved arrested and charged i just want to hurt us a. record low record there's no. well protests have been taking place around the world in solidarity with george floyd here in berlin there were demonstrations over the weekend including outside the u.s. embassy some in the german capital have turned to art to show their support. in beilin protesters gathered for a 3rd consecutive day in the city's men learn mock the ban the book gate how out.
12:07 pm
just say something. in front of the u.s. embassy. and into popular district of no because. they say that just as they know. they're angry and they demand justice for george floyd. in the north of the city a miracle as home age to george floyd attracted many local residents to sympathize with the supports shown for the protestants into why do world. i believe when the super bowl i think it's really good at these protests take place around the world it shows that people take what happened seriously but i see a difference here in germany or in europe it's another level of racism than what exists in the us what leads up to this dark yeah it's been it's true and i think it's important that such protests happen here too it means we are aware of the situation so yes i'm all for it. has been on the floor.
12:08 pm
it's been a fact is that it's not so cool that people aren't treated as they should be everybody's equal regardless of their skin color they are born that way and have the same rights the bond that we had to get back. here in germany presence of people gathered over the weekend to show solidarity following george protests in the united states here behind me you can see george floyd's last words i can't breathe on the mirror which stands right where the berlin wall used to stand this is highly symbolic and it does so shows that the struggle against racism is a global issue. well let's get some perspective on the story now we can speak to sharon door to she's a british author based here in berlin and activists with the initiative for black people here in germany thank you for joining us we heard a protester in our report just now saying that racism here in europe is different than in the u.s. and you have lived in both places so what is your take on that. i would like to
12:09 pm
just say i haven't lived in the u.s. i have visited it but i haven't actually done it in the u.k. and i've lived in germany now for 14 years i don't read the understand what that means that racism is different i was thinking about that just now when i heard it how would you describe the racism that exists then here in europe and what some of the protesters were voicing here in berlin well i think. what we experience here is black people living in predominantly white countries and the similar feelings of alienation which means that we kind of live out day to day lives with the feeling of having to look over our shoulder watch out be careful how we speak speak calmly even now when i'm given this interview i'm aware that it's important to me to choose my words carefully and and look non-threatening but
12:10 pm
actually i don't really angry and i'm getting scared. what makes you so angry and scared at this moment sharon i mean what are the inequalities that you feel that need to be addressed in this moment ok so one thing that makes me furious i have to admit is. that we are facing a situation which on the which many people it feels to me that many white people at the moment claim to be noticing for the 1st time just how bad it is with police violence against black people and then you hear people saying yeah but we don't have that in germany or it's not as he who is worse somewhere else than he is here . and i wonder where these people have been getting their information from i wonder where they've been living because for many black people living here. people who have citizenship like germans who can live here for 6 generations or people like me who are europeans who are moving through the continent or people who are seeking
12:11 pm
refuge. it often makes no difference if you're poached by a police officer on the streets 1st thing that is checked is who you are what are you doing and this image of black bodies being stopped in public places we've all seen it we will become used to it and if some other plays into the image that if someone has been stopped and there must be something wrong so that people aren't used to being criminalized and i'm wondering why many black people white people and non black people haven't noticed this before why is this now the 1st time that we're seeing at one of the reasons that that is the case is because black people are speaking happened demonstrating have been writing have been making films have been making music have been making art as you've said but these has not being disseminated out into the broader society to the duck dominant culture so why really hoping is that people keep saying oh they didn't realize it was this bad
12:12 pm
what now start to look at themselves and to start to look around them and to say how can they reduce the emotional burden on black people in their communities by educating themselves and how can they. stop this story that there isn't that much racism really here the question isn't is something racist the question is how does this particular thing perpetuate racist stereotypes and racist tropes. marriage sharon to do or to author an activist based here in berlin thank you very much for sharing your perspective with us. let's take a look now at some other stories making news around the world italy is holding celebrations to mark republic day which commemorates the abolition of its monarchy the highlight of the day is a fly over by the italian air force despite some lockdown measures still being in for celebration of events are taking place across the country. el salvador is

12:16 pm
shortages and an attempt to cash in on the crisis medical supply stores have started popping up in the capital bogota from full body suits to surgical gloves a seemingly endless stock of much needed equipment but there's a catch. even though protective gear can be purchased quite easily here and columbia adequate masks are expensive and often fake like this one but for many medical professionals entering this dangerous bargain is the only shot they have at finding at least some kind of protection. mariana treats patients in bogata to protect her little son from the virus she moved out of the family home 2 months ago and to protect herself from exposure at work she tried to take matters into her own hands. we received a private donation of n $95.00 masks and some face shields then we took it upon ourselves to buy protective overalls. but we weren't allowed to use this equipment at the hospital.
12:17 pm
the administration told us that we were only authorized to use what they provided for us. at the time that was merely a conventional mask. i was then reprimanded by my superiors it wasn't a big deal but it made me very sad to see that on top of them not guaranteeing our safety they cause problems when we try to take care of ourselves lack of protection in columbia is especially problematic because of an idiosyncrasy in the country's health care system. an aggravating factor we're seeing a lot more of here in colombia than in other countries is that health care workers are usually employed in more than one hospital between 40 and 60 percent of them work in 3 facilities they travel back and forth between them and that makes the handling of a pandemic with the kind of transmission rate we're currently seeing very difficult
12:18 pm
. to ensure protection of exposed health care workers a judge in colombia recently ruled in favor of a group of doctors who sued the health ministry now all hospitals are obliged to provide adequate equipment for their staff but for the over 1000 medical professionals in the country who have already contracted the virus that decision comes too late. now worldwide smartphone sales took a huge hit in the 1st quarter of this year according to new industry figures shipping data shows sales dropped by 20 percent in the 1st 3 months of the year as a crowbar coronavirus pandemic choke supply chains and lockdowns hit consumer demand business was back to 5 major smartphone makers samsung alone exported 20000000 fewer smartphones compared with 2019. shares in german car makers are up sharply today as hopes grow that the government is inching closer to
12:19 pm
a mega stimulus package car sales fell 61 percent in april to the lowest level in 30 years industry bosses are calling for the government to create incentives to encourage consumer spending on cars officials in berlin are working on a broad package of stimulus measures expected to be finalized tomorrow and let's go to our financial correspondent chelsea delaney is in frankfurt for us at the stock exchange there hi shell say there is optimism in the markets but just what is it that they are hoping the government will provide in the auto industry. certainly a big day for the auto makers here in germany time warner the parent of mercedes was up almost 10 percent on the frankfurt exchange earlier there is a lot of optimism surrounding this potential package it would be worth about $5000000000.00 euros according to reports and it would basically give buyers of new cars a subsidy a premium if they if they do purchase a new car here in germany so it would be sad if the amount would be staggered based
12:20 pm
on what type of card is so a conventional engine would be about you would get a premium about $2500.00 euros and that would go up all the way to about 4000 euros if you buy an electric car so they are trying to incentivize more climate friendly purchases so in this also is modeled on the premium program that the government put in place and in 2008 during the financial crisis which did lead to one of the best years ever for a german car sales so there is a precedent for this here in germany as well show so we have to say that the auto industry is hugely important in germany this is a sector that employs around 800000 people but the government is all too also under pressure to think about the environment so how is that tension actually playing out . it's been hugely controversial the auto industry has been calling for these subsidies for several weeks now and the government didn't really seem that open to it because there was a lot of opposition to the idea of subsidizing diesel engines especially as germany
12:21 pm
is positioning itself as a leader and and climate change efforts so that is going to remain a big topic of conversation as they move forward with these plans but as you said the german auto industry is absolutely crucial and they doing say that this will be very important to helping the economy recover from crown of irish. shell see the lady for us in frankfurt good to talk to you. temper but as the football now and fans were treated to a 6 gold bonanza in monday's clash between cologne and rb lights a visitors like 6 were hoping to get their title bid back on the right track after a draw against on match day 28 and they did just that. some games deserve an audience unfortunately stuffed toys were the only spectators for this one as the billy goats played host to leipsic. the goal 1st got off to
