package since world war 2 chancellor angela merkel says the aim is to give the next generations a future. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program a memorial service is taking place in minneapolis for george floyd who died in police custody in late may floyd's coffin has arrived at the city's north central university where the veteran civil rights activist the reverend al sharpton is due to deliver a eulogy now president donald trump has been criticized widely for threatening to send in the military to stamp out civil unrest which has swept the united states in the wake of floyd's death. let's get more now we are joined from minneapolis by correspondent zeman stefan
7:02 pm
what's the mood there ahead of this memorial. like. well as much as we can say our correspondent clearly cannot hear us but he is standing outside there in minneapolis minnesota ahead of this morial service of. george floyd which is due to take place in just a few moments time in the meantime we're going to head now to another. wrinkle in the story which is basically the fact that the hash tag white lives matter has been trending on twitter it was created by right wing critics of the anti racism protests but if you follow that hash tag now you may not see any right wing tweets that's because korean pop music fans started a campaign to drown it out let's bring a reporter on the message who is joining us here in the studio to talk a little bit more about that what is going on here yeah. might some of the strange story cream puffins would have by they getting involved to understand that you have
7:03 pm
to understand that on twitter korean puffins are a huge presence so they're very often behind globally trending tweets and hashtags so in this case they got involved that white lives matter was trending on twitter and this they didn't like that a lot of them and so they started tweeting using that hash tag but promoting their own content either putting out means or just videos of their favorite pop stars and the effect was that if you go on twitter and you see white lives matter trending and you follow that hash tag all you're going to see is k. pop stars on stage dancing and the effect there is that it drowns out these so-called racist tweets that was the original idea that has a so i mean they have good intentions writing. these k. pop fans and i'm getting involved but they're actually getting backlash so can you explain not yeah the backlash is that by using this tweet and by promoting this
7:04 pm
hash tag the effect. it is actually that the hash tag was in a virgin lee promoted so when i went on twitter i was wondering why white lives matter was trending i didn't think there would be that many far right voices on twitter using such a brazen hash tag to ridicule the protest movement. so when i look behind it i was surprised to see that it was k. pop fans and that's been training for 2 days now and the effect there is that this hash tag has been out there for so long only because of tape fans the other criticism is that a lot of times keep up fans only get involved in political moments when it's trending because perhaps they want to get their own you know their own fan riled up they want to get their favorite k. pop star's names out there and so they're kind of piggybacking on these political moments but other keep up and say no we're political we did this on purpose we're using our outsized platform to promote good causes and that that's the case in this case it is i mean s.f.
7:05 pm
thank you thank you. well as we mentioned earlier a memorial service is taking place in minneapolis minnesota for george floyd who died in police custody last week we are joined now from minneapolis by do that your correspondent stefan seaman's stefan what is the mood to have this memorial. all were just moments away off the floyd summer leave specter to arrive from right here to honor. george floyd's life and to mourn his death the mood across town is somber. there are thousands and thousands of spec to march to protest to come together and celebrate george floyds life today in minneapolis all over minnesota other state and all over the country actually tell us
7:06 pm
a little bit more about the state of those protests. around the country how are they right now. i would describe them as last peaceful they are here and they're in different cities in the united states different regions run in here and there with the police or the police has a run in with with protesters as you know in most cities where you have those made major protests there are curfews in place in the evening hours and on purpose a lot of protesters choose to ignore those curfews and to challenge the police by that by that very fact to enforce the curfew so that's why you have still the one of the other scuffle however here in minneapolis for the last few days largely absolutely peaceful protests more of a really somber mood in the with the protests makeshift memorials downtown. minneapolis with thoughts dross and
7:07 pm
a lot of people from all over to pay their respects to george floyd's so i would say we're entering into a peaceful face of those protests and you have been in minneapolis over the past week what's been the reaction to president tom's threat to deploy the military. to things quiet and deny a brawl raise or anger and total. not understanding why the president is saying what he's saying and a lot of people wondering if he really does not understand or refuses to understand or has an agenda to pretend that he doesn't understand what is actually really going on in the country right now. the talk of activating potentially the regular forces the u.s. army against their own people against americans seems to be in many many minds
7:08 pm
c.n.n. absolutely ludicrous idea on the other hand there's many who don't. anything but that from the president unfortunately and. i don't think that many here are taking him seriously having said that many here are also very angry that the president is not somebody who is capable and able to actually lead the nation that's what they tell us there's actually nobody who me leads the nation right now in this situation we hear from them and they're actually demanding vision they demand that the big problem of systemic racism in the united states and institutions police anywhere is going to be tackled actively actions counsel these people here not work they want justice for the death of george floyd has a memorial service kicking off behind you there in minneapolis minnesota. thank you
