racism his it counted here in germany as his bearing and of course comments and statements about my skin color. the use lead negotiator sees no significant progress during the latest talks on trade trade deal with is the u.k. prepared to leave without want. we need to take a look at the future of the plot the global covert emergency has less to a chance of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in some regions but many doubt whether the improvement is suspect.

gadol has welcome to the program the morial service for george floyd in minneapolis has heard impassioned calls for meaningful changes to policing and criminal justice in the u.s. the death of the 46 year old black man in police custody has sparked off and violence nationwide protests the service of floyd's home home city rather began with an emotional account of his last minutes. as you go through these long 8 minutes think about were george was going to. live for those 8 minutes. 'd silent in grief as family and friends remembered george floyd and his last minutes a life. outside the memorial service in minneapolis hushed crowds also monch the 8 minutes 46

virus pandemic that killed george clarke i want to make it clear only the record. we're packing it was the other. day we're. far too familiar we're from america. america of racism and discrimination there kid. george floor. they. say. george floyd is just the latest african american to lose his life in police custody. family friends and millions around the world now insist he must be the last.

one other case of police brutality has sparked outrage in the u.s. this time in buffalo new york an elderly man fell to the ground and was seriously injured after he was pushed by a police officer after the police initially stated that the man tripped and fell 2 officers have been suspended without pay the governor of new york state has called the incident absolutely disgraceful. in germany chancellor angela merkel has reacted to events following the death of george floyd she criticized president donald trump's leadership style but also acknowledged that germany too has problems with racism as. the murder of george florida's horrific racism is horrific and us society is very polarized. yet. i think the politicians should aim to nice and to reconcile i think that president trump style of politics is very controversial that's clear racism has always
6:06 pm
existed but unfortunately it exists here in germany too we should put our own house in order and hope that enough people in the u.s. will move forward with peaceful protests. i'm joined in the studio by a reporter. you moved from the u.s. to germany 13 years ago as a black american is your experience of racism here in germany different from the u.s. and how well it is different in terms of i've been stopped before by the police asking me for papers and once i told them here in germany here in germany and when i told them i was an american citizen they left me alone so obviously that was a sign that other black people do experience that sort of you know racial profiling but of course in terms of the institution of racism itself you know people having trouble getting into the job market or you know housing those are things that can also affect someone like me so i do have situations where my american nationality
6:07 pm
protects me but the racism like the institute of racism itself is something that i also have to deal with here and i also speak in we can play the report just once i finish as i speak about every day racism in germany as well and i've been looking into that and that's something that can be seen in the report and that's maybe something slightly different from the united states now let's have a look at the report. this memorial to george floyd popped up last weekend. when he died of the huns of a policeman in the u.s. his death is also being used to bring awareness to racism here in germany and across the world. it is hard to find a country without any form of racism and i experienced that here as well in berlin . there's the daring and of course awkward comments and statements about my skin color. but you kind of move around the city as
6:08 pm
a black person without being aware obvious can color on average there are $3.00 to $4.00 racist incidents reported per day in the german capital according to the berlin register for discrimination and not everyone is reporting them so there could be far more. that's why the black lives matter movement has also been protesting here in berlin well europe has fewer deadly incidents involving the police some cases have stayed with me again you know it's not that long ago only jallow burned to death in a police cell here in germany in 2005 no one was convicted for his death. in the u.k. in 2011 mark duggan was shot by a policeman who was never convicted. in france adama told died during police custody in 2016 and no one has been found responsible for his death
6:09 pm
that's why the protests in france have been violent. people are frustrated with structural racism. hasn't really dealt with its links to slavery and. here in germany several streets i named after individuals from the countries colonial period i can berlin's african quarter where even now some streets bear the names of germany's most infamous and brutal cologne new figures. do you think they protest in the u.s. and europe does it change anything. wow i mean we speak about germany specifically of course we have a statement from. referring to what happened in the u.s. and racism as horrific and of course also mentioning is a quite strong that's a very strong statement but if you look at the coverage like on german media that hasn't been very strong to pointing to racism in germany they've been covering the
6:10 pm
protests in the u.s. but they haven't really said look at our own problems and how are we dealing with racism in this country and i think that is what is lacking in the discussion in germany at this point do you think that the average german on the street the well meaning average white german understands what's going on in terms of racism no they don't because they don't see racism as an institution they look at it very differently and i think it's a european problem it's not just germany apart from the u.k. . racism is not understood as an institution like sexism is and i think people have moved past looking at sexism as you know to something that women have you know have an issue with but rather as an institution and i think we don't have that for racism in germany and i think that might take a couple of years to sort of get into people's heads. briefly if you can your thoughts about the u.s. will things improve. optimistically i'd like to say yes but it has to take
6:11 pm
a lot of talking i think that's what we can hope for. thank you very much for that is very personally. but back to politics the latest round of breaks it talks between the e.u. and the u.k. of ended with no significant progress according to the use top negotiator michelle bond here he has accused london of failing to all of the break the divorce agreement as the 2 sides try to thrash out a trade deal before the end of the year he claims british officials are trying to backtrack on commitments they've already agreed to. of the british say the negotiations the need to speed up van a was clearly frustrated we engaged in this negotiation under british of a joint political victory sion that clearly set out the terms of our future partnership this document. the document is
6:12 pm
a very bold in all languages. including english. digital version was negotiated which prime minister johnson inside. it is for us. and it will remain for us the only valid reference yet round after round our british counterparts she could be stoned them cherish from this common basis let's bring in our top experts for this story bob of islam brussels and begin in london you both have followed the latest developments on these boards that negotiations barbara let's start with you we've heard bonnie is saying that u.k. is backtracking in all areas stark words from the use chief negotiator how serious is the situation. quite serious indeed care hard because just look at the ways to mean these people have 300 experts and both sides have had 4 rounds of talks off 4
6:13 pm
or 5 days over the last 2 months and they haven't achieved anything they haven't even defined a lending area where you know talks could continue they haven't even gotten gotten to the point where compromises could even be thought about now one of the problems is of course that we have to negotiate is here who are not politicians themselves so they have a mandate david frost the british negotiator has a mandate from doris johnson is prime minister and michel barnier on the e.u. side has a mandate from the 27 if you leaders so they have to move with in that frame and that obviously has been narrow enough that it made made it impossible for both of them to somehow get together and also beyond technicalities there was simply nothing. massive in london what's the huge trade government saying about the state the state of negotiations and the allegations of truckin. well they
6:14 pm
haven't said anything regarding the allegation of backtracking however they do concede that in a statement david frost said the negotiations are really not progress and very much and he is edging for the negotiations to intensify but he doesn't specify what he's thinking about we do know though what the british government want and they don't want what the e.u. want which is like an overarching structure that binds the e.u. and the u.k. together they want to be as flexible as possible and this is where the 2 don't come together the e.u. wants a protected single market and they don't want a competitor outside their doorstep that is undercutting them maybe and several ways economic laws for example or even the group or any green issues and the u.k. want to be free to do their own trade deals they're hoping to do
6:15 pm
a trade you very soon with the u.s. and they simply don't want to stick to the e.u.'s rules and this is where the 2 sides don't come together at the moment to get politically economically is the u.k. prepared to leave the year without incident. this is elise what does johnson and his government are insinuating they're saying well we do want a deal however we don't want to deal at any costs but we do know that the u.k. economy is already deeply hit by the corona crisis is the deepest economic crisis the country has ever been and and if on top of that there is a nodia bragg's it which might mean terrace on on various goods and then really acrimonious split with its closest trading partners that would be a fad ahead for the u.k. economy we know for example that some call make us are saying well they have to relocate their plans so it would be really really deep hit for the u.k. economy on top of all the political damage that that would cause you know barbara
6:16 pm
in brussels with so much frustration that apparently on both sides is there still a way to come to an agreement. of course michel barnier the new diplomat stresses that there is still time to october 31st he even made specific so we could continue talks he said for instance at the beginning of july but there needs to be some basis for it there is no point in just sort of turning the same issues over and over barney accusing the brits of backtracking and saying you don't keep to the promises you made in the past that you made was there was strong agreement and vice versa so they need to be political intervention at this point boris johnson is going to meet even though only per video conference the. heads of the european commission knows life on the line and the council president and
6:17 pm
they will need to sort of threshold whether they can do some movement now if there is no political change within the next 2 weeks then what's the point point of further negotiations so it's still up in the air how is this going to continue but the e.u. stresses of course we will not stop trying because in the end they don't want to carry the guilt when these negotiations really fail at the end. probably isn't brussels a good master in london thank you paul. and as some of the other stories making headlines around the world russia says it has stopped the spread of a massive oil spill in northern siberia a criminal investigation is underway into the cause of the disaster which happened when a diesel reservoir collapsed at a past ation cleanup and environmental recovery might take years. strayer has banned a black lives matter protest that was planned in sydney over the weekend
6:18 pm
authorities in the state of new south wales took protest organizers to court arguing of event breached coronavirus social distancing rules with thousands of people expected to attend. german police are investigating if the man suspected of murdering madeleine mccann might also be linked to the disappearance of another child in germany 43 year old prepares 3 of previous sex offenses including child abuse 3 year old madeleine went missing from a portuguese holiday resort in 2007. mosques in the indonesian capital jakarta open for group prayers for the 1st time in 9 weeks where ships are supposed to bring their own prayer rugs wear masks and remain one meter of pot temperature checks are also carried out the entrance to the malls. south africa has begun easing its drone of ours lock down but infection numbers have started to rise sharply president so ramaphosa says he is particularly concerned

about the area around cape town on a visit to the city opened a temporary field hospital and was briefed on the drive to contain the virus the government is struggling with shortages of testing kits health care staff and. now let's go straight to cape town where the ws area increases standing by for more yesterday room we saw the highest surge of new coronavirus infections in south africa since the outbreak began or come to expect from opposers inspection today. well i'm of course i came here to see how ready the state is for the peak of the pandemic which is possibly already happening yet by the end of this month he was supposed to come here already last month but then the prime minister in the western cape had to go and parents and so the visiting test had to be postponed we have to recall that cape town has been having relatedly high numbers of corn of iris cases compared to the rest of the country ever since the beginning remember it's
6:20 pm
a very cosmopolitan city a lot of international guests coming here to resent the tourists also brought many cases the virus to the area but in the early stages of the outbreak the numbers still a very low because the south africa implemented a very strict lockdown as you as you have mentioned and that way the number stayed low but now for weeks they have been easing these restrictions and it was clear from the 1st place that the numbers would be going up and at the moment we see this massive explosion of coronavirus cases especially here and we're seeing a spread specially in the townships in the poorer areas of the city where people live in very poor circumstances in very congested areas and it's very difficult for them obviously to to social distance in many cases when they do western cape this region surrounding cape town decided yesterday that you do a lot of test only high risk individuals will be tested from now on but how can they get a realistic picture of coronavirus cases if they do that. absolutely
6:21 pm
that was a very controversial decision and we understand the president is also not very happy about it but the prime minister here said look we have a massive backlog in the liberty level terrorists 100000 tests haven't been the results haven't come out i did a test 2 weeks ago i got my results within 4 days now if you do a test at the moment it takes up to 2 weeks until you get your results so the prime minister has said look it actually doesn't make sense to do tests on of these circumstances so we were rather have those people at risk doing test the elderly ones people above 55 people with 8. or have a disease they should do a test and get their results now within 2448 hours so then they can act immediately but the health minister today assured that the country is walking out to get the test capacities back on track he said the next week they expect a new delivery of test kits and then things should go slowly get back to normal. on

south africa's corona situation other injuries in cape town thank you. in israel the new government is pushing ahead with plans to annex part of the occupied west bank the plan has drawn criticism both internationally and from palestinian groups but it's got the support of us president almost trump our reporter. visited the city of jericho the jordan valley one of the regions that israel intends to annexed she reports on the fears of the city's police to indian population date from a april him is checking on his palm trees near jericho a palestinian city in the choice of the harvest you in september but the palestinian farmer is worried about the weeks ahead israel's plans to annex the jordan valley in the summer would have serious repercussions for palestinians learning. we have become disappointed there is no clear path for peace with this

decision it brings about disillusionment and pessimism that it's all over for. sure. borys that this unilateral move by the israeli government means the end of any prospect of an independent palestinian state and this might lead to violence jericho itself would remain under the administration after palestinian authority but it would be surrounded by the next area the plans are based on u.s. president donald trump's controversial peace proposal in jericho people are worried about what the consequences will be. on the current beach island and inside your leg foreignness in our own country and now the area where we allow to and with will become theirs as well as this will bring him into father this is what will happen if the next esther is or i'm going to stand up against israel and against a palestinian authority is her captured and occupied the jordan valley in 1967

it makes up a sizable part of a large contiguous area within the occupied west bank is right considers the area a strategic security buffer to watch the east palestinians say without the jordan valley there can't be a palestinian state. in the palestinian leadership canceled security cooperation with israel and the u.s. last week sad ever cut longtime p.l.o. negotiator wants about further cautions but it with an exception is the destruction over the past 2 months of it's got to be sustained both in i thought he was born critical of. through negotiations from occupation going to print now with him you know one from bush saying no no you will be on the occupation but we will call you another name. sever e.u. states the u.n. and arab states like neighboring jordan have already won this may lead to severe

consequences but most palestinians have lost all hope that such cautions which change israel's plans. the united nations has designated today world environment day a global emergency has put pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and some regions because economic activity has been widely suspended but not all environmentalists sub to mystic about what this to mean for the future. time for nature the tagline for this year's world environment day the theme biodiversity more than 500 species have gone extinct in the last 100 years another 500 are on the brink human driven climate change is one of the factors pushing what scientists say is the 6th mass extinction. industrial production and air travel are some of the main causes of the c o 2 emissions causing global heating but the coronavirus crisis has largely brought
6:26 pm
them to a halt the biggest drops in global emissions so far came as a result of conflict and 3 global recessions but some projections say the current crisis could lead to the biggest ever drop in emissions more than all these previous reductions combined. still some experts say it's not enough i think there is a short term gain you know like we're seeing c o 2 reductions right while but we need really a massive global. effort to solve the climate crisis and right now we are going to spend the next 5 years you know ogress on this pandemic and responding to it which are 5 years that we don't really have. a societies move out of lockdown the question is how will they do that for nature environmentalists will be hoping for a more sustainable step into the future. you're watching the news from
