does not race. here but. the loads be there old outdated 80 people understand. it's not enough to be angry you have to vote have to translate that into action you need to be a consequence for that action and you need to be told that that will happen no more no fee they know. while demanding action against police brutality is at the forefront of saturday's peaceful demonstrations these protests are also highlighting a long standing problem a lot of money called systemic racism and inequality in the united states topics that will likely become central to the presidential battle for the white house in november. and a major european protest is also underway in brussels correspondent teri schultz is there reporting for us terry good to see you tell us what are you seeing there on
4:03 pm
the ground well as you can see behind me people are still pouring into this protest i downtown right in front of the palace of justice here in brussels more than 10000 said they were coming we don't have any final numbers now on how many actually showed up but it will be thousands and thousands and you know this is the momentum from the black lives natter movement in the united states has spread all across europe and that's why we're here in brussels today as well so the processors are showing solidarity with the us movement but they have demands of their own. absolutely here in belgium there is also been an issue of police brutality of course that the root issue that started the protests in the united states there have been several young people killed in recent in recent months there's no viral video of a policeman with a knee on the neck of a young belgian child but there have been smaller protests with each of these
4:04 pm
deaths that now are being wound into this larger protest sparked by the killing of george floyd now there's also another issue here i would like to bring up and that is the brutal colonial history of belgium and again demonstrators are hoping that with the new attention to racial inequality that too may be addressed you know we've seen the protesters in the u.s. have been tearing down statues associated with slavery there and brussels protests that are also demanding statues being torn down to tell us about that. that's right king leopold the 2nd colonized congo in a way that makes some other. message hers look look small by comparison more than $10000000.00 congolese were killed during the period that belgium ruled congo and of course many of us know about about the chopping off of hands and feet if rubber production wasn't up to the standards of the belgian overseers so this has been
4:05 pm
a longstanding complaint that belgians of connally's descent and even other belgians have had that king leopold 2 should not be held in a reverent status there should not be huge statues of him all over the country and we have seen those statues then the lies over the last week almost every day in a different park around the country and they are saying it's time for king leopold 2 not to be seen as this wonderful figure that you know did brought peace to peace and security to congo and instead he should be seen in the in the context of his very brutal treatment of that country and the march today in brussels that comes after a 1st attempt to organize a black last night or march on monday what happened there. the city was very reluctant to give permission for any sort of gathering we are still under coronavirus restrictions all of us are supposed to only come in contact with 10 other people per week starting tomorrow so it was posted before until now as you
4:06 pm
can see i have many of many people coming into contact every 2 days so this is in fact breaking the coronavirus restrictions and so the city on monday said no but the mayor of proselyte decided that people needed to have a chance to express their views and so he personally against the wishes of the prime minister gave them the march a permission to go ahead they are very determined that it remain peaceful there are also organizers walking around telling everybody to wear their masks so they are trying to keep as much of the coronavirus restrictions being observed as possible but. obviously with a crowd of thousands and thousands that's going to be difficult and that's a risk that everybody understood political correspondent terry scholz reporting from brussels thank you. it's been a weekend of anti racism demonstrations that have spanned the globe protesters took to the streets in many parts of the world to call for an end to racism and police brutality in the united states but also as we've seen in their own societies.
4:07 pm
this sound of outrage echoes around the world what started as an anti racist protest movement in the u.s. has spread globally in lisbon crowds rallied against every day just crewman a sion of people of color. is to move these this so this mobilization happening here and in other european countries shows what they have in common regarding racial discrimination we are rising against that who stands at the back of the name of the man who died while in police custody in the us is now a rallying cry in portugal. george bush was banned in france. protests took place in paris despite a ban based on health grounds that i'm here because i want to fight for the oppressed from my community in the black community whether here in france or in the united states paul successful as it does. us embassies were

a magnet for marches as here in london. black their sin custody has happened in the u.k. to the largely peaceful gatherings ended with some protesters throwing objects at offices and mounted police clearing crowds i in australia there's renewed outrage at the deaths of hundreds of aboriginal people in jails and police stations over decades with no officer ever prosecuted i tens of thousands rallied in sydney after a court overturned a protest ban i. think . germany too has on result cases of deaths of black and brown people in prisons crowds in berlin carried local and global messages. my need to show all those

get out from underneath the ice. no risk is extremely remote making the cleanup operation very challenging so to the fact that the diesel leak coming from a nearby power plant was not initially reported that meant tens of thousands of square kilometers of additional land were polluted. which is good news why we only learning about this emergency now on social media 2 days after it happened. have you lost your minds. it was literally. the power plant is operated by the norilsk nickel mining group the company long ago made the siberian city one of the most heavily polluted in russia. the plant is operated in such an irresponsible way there aren't enough technical and environmental inspections and then there's the storing of the permafrost. 2 thirds of russia's land mass is becoming increasingly
