thanks for joining us britain faces its deepest recession since 300 years due to the coronavirus pandemic economy shrank by a record 20.4 percent in april the sharp drop reflects the impact of the country's coated 19 locked down bad news as the country heads with important deadlines looming. once again the european union is waiting for boris johnson once again he missed an important deadline and once again the british prime minister is taking his time johnson's government has until the end of june to decide when and under what circumstances his country will leave the e.u. britain has registered more than 2000000 unemployed since march the bank of england calls this the worst recession in 3 centuries is boris johnson teetering on the brink of a brig's a disaster stephen norman c.e.o.

of british car manufacturer vauxhall recently commented. you know. michel barnier the e.u. representative in free trade talks with britain is losing his patience to the agreement should have been reached by the end of the year but now the talks have become so bogged down that a further postponement seems likely boris johnson could ask for an extension but time is set to run out on june 30th. if he doesn't apply for an extension it will result in a no deal brigs it with customs duties supply bottlenecks and another round of long debates in the british parliament. more talk to only hope he's executive director of the german british chamber of industry and commerce and joins me from london thanks for being with us mr hopewell are you confident that there will be a viable trade deal between the e.u.
11:03 am
and britain. i'm not overly confident that there will be a viable trade deal think there's more than 50 percent chance that we'll end up with a no deals in audio and it will not be in an extension of the implementation period the government has made it quite clear there's a lot of attributes that and every noise as we hear from the the political establishment actually sticking to this 31st of december deadline and that the e.u. and the u.k. will come to an agreement on a free trade deal it doesn't look likely at the moment if there is no trade deal between even the u.k. what could that mean for the british economy especially given the impact of the pandemic. it's another hit to the economy so due to the pandemic probably the u.k. g.d.p. will fall by give or take 12 to 15 percent this year and doubtful then we'll have to exit on top of that and not signal by the politicians but sometimes they argue we have to reset the economy anyhow so we don't want to reset it tries because of
11:04 am
threats at end of covert 19 just do it all together but i think it will be an extra hit to the economy unemployment will be even higher that will be a problem more destruction than we already have so i think it's an honest unnecessary step to combine these 2 things ok but it's still possible that a deal could be struck even if there is a deal what's the long term picture for britain do you think it will still be as attractive for investors in trading partners or will they focus on other countries . it will be less attractive as and investment location i mean it's still attractive as the world language it's a global that will not go why but it's about lost opportunities lost opportunities with the kona crisis etc on top of all that i think will be less attractive place and people will feel it and the u.k. needs in which investment it needs innovation coming from import and that's mischance for the u.k. actually to create well so it's people what about german companies that are invested in the u.k. how are they preparing for what's ahead. i think most of them are preparing for
11:05 am
nokia's and now you know because that's what it's most likely going to happen in their opinion and that's why he shouted monks all explodes and they have to stop with stockpiling again and so on and of course many german companies just sell to the u.k. so for them it's a logistical problem but you also have the comment of fact b.m.w. producer there have the supply chain issues you have the chemical industry they have to be registered that the chemicals so these are huge costs coming on top of that they are preparing for that but it will be costly and a bull have an influence on that investment decisions mr harper thank you very much for your insights that was only harper from the german british chamber of industry and commerce much as. while european countries aim to prevent a 2nd wave of interactions many parts of the globe haven't seen the worst of the park coronavirus yet d.w. correspondents sent these coronavirus updates from around the world. the nigerian

especially those from nato countries who fight terrorism in afghanistan right alongside of us correspondent. is following european reaction for this and joins us now from brussels so mike says the i.c.c. afghan investigations threaten washington and nato why. the threat in this regard is a strong. because the court is still in its very early stages in the examination into alleged war crimes in afghanistan and the court is not only probing the american army but also the taliban the afghan army and other wallets involved in the conflict. didn't the unlikely case that somebody actually gets accused in a couple of years then the call it could find that americans did wrong and then maybe
11:13 am
nato would not be able to wage wars in afghanistan and other places around the world like they used to do but this is still very far away and you have to keep in mind that the united states and also russia china and others are not members of the called the united states the united states don't have to cooperate and they don't have to turn over american soldiers or who will be accused as some at some point maybe by the hague ok so the u.s. really doesn't like the i.c.c. and seems other nato members share the u.s. position on this. but the reactions from other member states a little bit muted because all nato member states but the usa are actually supporting the call that they signed the convention for this international criminal court only the u.s. is abstaining and the dutch foreign minister said he's appalled by the actions of

the united states because this move is unprecedented it's blackmailing the called into some action and this is not something you normally do in international relations but there is no official statement from nato yet and nato might also be concerned because it's also about some secret. detention camps the united states allegedly had in poland rumania and other countries in europe. thank you so much that was banned in brussels to soccer in the spanish top flight became the 2nd major european league to return from its coronavirus hiatus last night so beat city rivals rail bettys 2 nil in front of empty stands fans congregate outside the stadium though despite official calls to maintain social distance many supporters watched in bars at times. the better of them watching their team for the 1st time in 3 months. when has boosted their
