is facing its deepest recession in 300 years due to the coronavirus pandemic the economy shrank by a record 20.4 percent in april the sharpest drop on record reflecting the impact of the country's covered 19 lockdown and is not the only bad news for businesses hoping to land back on their feet boris johnson's government has signaled it won't seek an extension of the bracks it's a transition period which is due to end on december 31st and talks stalled that means the next shock could already be on the horizon. earlier this week shops in london's posh west-end district celebrated the news that they consumed opened their doors again. you can see now they can actually come back again they're right putting up their stores that windows is starting to be redressed so there is an excitement i think to come and see people again but the optimism got a reality check friday when the u.k. announce a record decline in economic activity for april businesses are now bracing themselves

for a double blow to the coronavirus the u.k.'s economy is heading towards the worst crash in centuries. to make matters worse the u.k. has officially ruled out extending the current transition period that means unless real progress is made and talks a new deal breaks it is increasingly likely that could harm britain's trade relationship with its european neighbors and even drive potential investment away. in terms if the the last chance is because of brics that there will not be that many companies coming here that would otherwise be so it's really about lost opportunities which i think no country can afford at the moment with the current across it's just to create some extra loss of opportunity i'm on prime minister boris johnson and european commission president will sign off on the line are scheduled to hold talks next week. with the grim economic backdrop sinking in businesses hope the video call will break the impasse. let's take a look at financial markets after thursday's punishing session on wall street the

big question was whether stocks would rebound and they did with the dollar jones industrial average gaining about 2 percent however the coronavirus law found is still taking its toll on the world's largest economy all major u.s. indexes suffered their biggest weekly percentage declines since the week ended on march 20th. let's bring in our financial correspondent new york against a rebound yes but wild swings during friday's trading session and a pretty bad look overall what are we to make of it there well there there were some concerns because we got reports that in some states and corona cases are actually on the increase specially in the southwest of the united states and states like arizona and texas and even in parts of california but it has been a crazy week on wall street to just think back on wednesday when the nuts that cup

was it so technology shares for the very 1st time ever surpassed the 10000 point mark followed on thursday by those huge drops specially in the dow jones industrial average when it lost of all $800.00 points now on friday we call to recover some of those losses but for the week's new chips are down by 5 and a half percent now many states in the united states are relaxing their coronavirus restrictions but a majority of people says they will maintain virus precautions what is that going to mean for the u.s. economy. well i mean just look at restaurants and some other places even if a lot of those some have free open they're far away from the same capacity they had before the virus broke out so we will see less business there no doubt whether what is true for a lot of the retailers you will probably see is some of the airlines actually getting smaller especially when we are hitting fall and the center for disease

control on friday actually said if in some places the cases are increasing heavily then maybe those places sold those areas will have to be locked down again so what we've seen in march so bottom line is that we will see probably a rather an even recovery that would also jerome powell the fed chairman hinted at on wednesday so turbulences are clearly not over at this point even if we had a little bit of a comeback and a little happy here at least in the friday session you know your correspondents quarter of morning from new york dance thank you. and now a brief look at some of the other business stories making headlines. europe's industrial production suffered the worst drop in its history in april and average factories produce 17 percent less than they did a month earlier that's according to the euro stat statistics office italy

cookouts are a beloved australian pastime a way to bring people together. but it's not often that you see maize on the barbie . thanks to a community garden started 4 years ago in adelaide this staple of many recipes from the african continent is now available for purchase to the public. event it will be less ones not only from off the kind of communities but even from the middle east and from asia and now we are teaching even. to to use the maze and they like. the garden is a hub for people looking to purchase maize and the demand is surging this means that there's more to do for people looking for community and jobs. but when i see the god in it it reminds me so i feel i'm a whole another way of a sense of belonging for people like me who come from another country. and it's

not just the corn growing the size of the garden is to. the community organization recently bought a strip of land across the road and is looking for local market gardeners to plant maize as well the hope is that one day there will be enough maize to make their own flower. thank you and it's back to germany 14000000 people that's the number of visitors the german capital berlin counted last year the city with its combination of history and mud life heavily depends on tourism setting visitor records for 17 years in a row until the shutdown slowed things are picking up again now since the end of may hotels and restaurants have been open and they are trying to adapt to a new reality. it's still relatively empty but things are starting to improve at the hotel ranya and violence courts back to strict. because on its. own philip focal as the hotel manager and kitchen chef all rolled into one lunch to

go is telling quite well companies from the neighborhood order lunch and pick it up it's over to the crisis though the hotel restaurant is only open for the few hotel guests during the evening but it's not enough business. he plays into it was important for us to show our presence and that we're still here and we're in charge of 45 employees we're slowly getting out of short time work we reduced everything and still have the breaks on me but it's important that our employees are in good spirits and that they have a task as much as they may have enjoyed the time they had with their families the employees now want to work and get recognition for it. or not make enough of us to . phillips' wife jennifer takes care of the guests totalis $41.00 rooms most of them have been empty for weeks hygiene is of the utmost importance decorations are at a minimum the hotel manager is glad that things are slowly starting to pick up
