trust deception. pursuit of the goal that starts july 1st on t w. this is g w news live from berlin tonight a potential breakthrough treatment for coded 19 researchers in the u.k. have found that a low cost widely available stair will reduces deaths by up to $1.00 3rd among severely ill coded 1000 patients also coming up tonight could it be happening again china's scrambling to contain a new corona virus outbreak in beijing schools have been closed residents told not
10:01 pm
to leave the city and india says 20 of its soldiers have been killed in clashes with chinese troops at a disputed border in the himalayas. i'm burnt off to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world welcome we begin with what is being called a breakthrough in the fight against the corona virus researchers in the u.k. say they've identified the 1st drug that significantly reduces the risk of death in patients hospitalized with coated 19 in a major trial the low cost steroids dex method was found to cut by a 3rd in patients on ventilators and by a 5th in patients receiving oxygen doctors are expected to begin treating people
10:02 pm
with the drug immediately. and one of the trials chief investigators is hailing the findings as a potential. game changer in the fight to save the lives of people with advanced coded 19 it really sharing going to significant things and it's really important because the drug itself is very widely available it's on most every pharmacy shelf in every hospital it's available throughout the world and it's extremely cheap so we've looked at the numbers and if we treat patients in intensive care with the stroke. we save one life and the total cost of treating patients is only about $40.00 pounds so this is really really remarkable extremely pleased as positive news indeed my 1st guest tonight is jason converge with a professor enviroment at the university of manitoba he joins us now from canada jason it's good to have you on the show so i want to be clear this is steroids it helps people who have severe cases of good night scene what about patients whose
10:03 pm
cases are not so most of the that it's such a great question right so we're trying to learn about this and in real time know we know that something initial data that it came out at the very start of this pandemic it suggested that steroids actually may exacerbate disease in in those that are in the early stages so i think one of the concerns right now with with dex about the zone is that there are you know would there be the potential that if you treated patients too early they might actually end up increasing the potential severity of disease because it actually acts as an anti inflammatory so i think that we have to look at this as a potential game changer for those patients that are actually in severe disease distress but we are still lacking for some sort of a therapeutic that will ultimately help reduce infections in the very early stages of disease so when it's and sounds like if i'm understanding you correctly then it really matters here the time in the course of the disease when you administer this
10:04 pm
drug because if you administer it too early you could actually exhilarate could have not seen is that correct. there is that potential right and that's the the problem in the in the kind of the trickiness with these types of diseases is the unfortunate side is we don't necessarily see cure alls outside of vaccines so now we get into an issue of thinking about exactly that the timing of when the administration's are done and then if you can explain to his dreams you know we've been told that the corona virus attacks mostly mostly the lungs of the patients and now we're talking about a steroids being used to treat it what do we know about the steroids and how does the stairway to actually work against the corona virus yet it's such a great question right so one of the things that we tend to look at with these different types of emerging viruses is the fact that they tend to basically increase the immune response so he's actually getting over stimulation of the
10:05 pm
immune response which in most cases actually is protective for us but in many cases can actually increase disease verity so the hope with something like dexter methods own is that rather than acting directly on the virus and trying to reduce the ability of the virus to create more copies of itself what the drugs are trying to do is essentially reduce all that damage that is part and parcel of a note or active immune system and an overactive immune system would that be the case in younger patients than older patients i mean is this drug or the steroids better for older patients. oh so it's such a good question right and i think i'll say what a friend i think feel that i'm interested in a lot of position at this point because i can i could simply say i don't think we know yet we're getting a better picture of what the disease looks like cross patients of all age groups. so really what we're seeing is that you know with many patients with severe disease there's socially and over stimulation of the immune system how that kind of factors
10:06 pm
out across different age groups and how dex about his own potentially offers some object of a fact or decreased damage effect i don't think we quite know yet so we're still in the early stages of understanding that ok well exile an answer is there jason can project professor of biology of the university of manitoba in canada james and we appreciate your insights and your time tonight thank you well the chinese capital beijing is reimposing coronavirus restrictions amid a cluster of new cases the city has ordered all schools to be closed and it has banned people from high risk areas from leaving the city the new outbreak has been traced to a large wholesale foods market there have been over 100 cases in the city in just the past 5 days stoking fears of a 2nd wave of cope with 19. beijing residents thought they'd put this behind them but hey they are lining up in the hot sun for math coronavirus testing after nearly 2 months a new act break is causing
10:07 pm
a lot dozens of cases have been traced to this sprawling wholesale food market it's more than 20 times larger than the went to market in ruhani whether the virus was 1st identified. pictures from state television show the response in the surrounding neighborhood residents here not to live to leave or say they are in wartime mode as they aim to contain the spread there's anxiety has already made its way to other parts of the city. i am very worried for now i don't know what the situation will be in the future because we are getting much information we don't know if the virus will spread again if it does we should worry. i meant sheltering it was supposed to be nearly over and then we suddenly get another wave of cases in which they. have closed schools as by the sports and entertainment venues only residents who have recently tested negative are allowed to leave the city and only if travel is
10:08 pm
essential the measures fall short of a full lock time but the world health organization says beijing is doing enough the cluster like this is a concern and it needs to be investigated that controlled and that's exactly what the chinese authorities are doing but other provinces are concerned many have imposed quarantine requirements on visitors from beijing and a country that had declared victory over the coronavirus is forced to confront the ever present risk of a fresh outbreak. in south africa schools have reopened after several weeks of a coronavirus shutdown but not everyone is happy about going back to school the country is seeing a massive spike in corona virus he says more than $4000.00 per day and the teachers union they have warned that the school system is not sufficiently equipped to keep students and teachers say he wus adrian creech reports tonight from cape town.
10:09 pm
police out in force in front of a school and odd way for students at rhodes high school in cape town to begin the day the school must lock down today but activists have announced on social media that they would force all open schools to close only if you showed up but they were furious i don't think it's right that we open the school school should be shut until such time that we are surely. assured that everything is fine no one will be affected then only can the schools be open we should close the shut the schools down until next year and this is to kill all told him. 2 teachers at the school have tested positive for 90. the gentleman was just claiming that's been too many children in the classes all rooms are laid off according to protocols you can come in looking for if you want to. disinfect and temperature checks social distancing the school
10:10 pm
administration is sure that they are taking protective measures seriously the local government has already spent the last 50000000 euros on them. ok this is a store you can see. properly. with the 2 teachers who have come down with the coronavirus way infected outside the school and that context has been isolated so the principal doesn't understand why people are protesting i don't think it makes any sense is matric exams coming up these people need. parents outside the school a dream i've heard last tour bus most. performers this. experts predict that the 1st peak in coronavirus cases in cape town will hit in the coming weeks. south africa and post one of the strictest lockdowns walter white a. already in the end of march when the infection numbers were still very low now
10:11 pm
in june the country decided to open the schools again while we're seeing a massive increase in the number of cases the especially here in the western cape in the area around cape town the 8 percent of the outbreak in south africa this society here is too wide it's about whether it was a good idea to reopen the schools at this point of time or not. by religious. happy that his son can go back to school again he says the wrists to children from the virus are minimal but there is no scientific consensus on how dangerous they may be to others. he sure does i'm afraid children in the school site getting infected and then bringing it back to the poor households where 3 or 4 generations live under the same roof that means usually in one or 2 rooms social distancing from grandma grandpa is impossible in these circumstances so that can lead to more infections says he should. go.
10:12 pm
so far south africa has only allowed students in 7th and 12th grades to return to school the rest will come in in july and august most likely accompanied by protests . here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world u.s. president donald trump has signed an executive order to encourage changes in policing it provides incentives for more training and restricts the use of police chokeholds but critics say the order does not address charges of systemic racism in police departments police or fire tear gas at a demonstration of health workers in paris the clashes broke out during peaceful protests in the city demonstrators are demanding an end to budget cuts and they want more investments in public health care it comes as the country's health care system is struggling because of it 19 pandemic malta has opened an investigation

into alleged links between a former police chief and people implicated in the murder of prominent journalist daphne carroll on 3 years ago the police chief resigned in january amid accusations that he had bungled the investigation into the journalist. the only in india says at least 20 of its soldiers have been killed in a clash with chinese forces it happened along a disputed border in the himalaya meltdowns china has accused india of a provocation chinese media are reporting chinese casualties although tensions between the 2 sides have been building over the last month this is the 1st incident with fatalities in more than 40 years. high in the himalayas trouble has been brewing for weeks these satellite images show indian and chinese troops gathering in a disputed border region now for the 1st time in decades india says 20 soldiers
10:14 pm
were killed the 2 sides fault with fists and rocks no shots were fired beijing said it was defending its territorial integrity and we're introducing shockingly on june 15th indian troops seriously violated the bilateral consensus and crossed the border line twice engaging in illegal activities and provoking and attacking chinese personnel resulting in serious physical confrontation between border forces on the 2 sides. treaty. this yellow line marks the boundary between these 2 superpowers known as the line of actual control it's not a hard buda since china and india have never agreed on where it should lie in 2017 the 2 sides confronted each other for 73 days after indian troops blocked chinese construction of a road flare ups
10:15 pm
a vector chinese and indian leaders for years with the last thing solution seemingly out of reach this latest escalation suggests a difficult path ahead for these 2 nuclear armed nations. yeah and for more tonight i'm joined by. a senior lecturer in international studies at king's college london it's good to have you on the program you know we have seen more than 4 decades of tense standoff here but no fatalities and of course no war how worried should we be after these the taliban's that we're seeing tonight i would be very very worried i mean i think that there are going to be dynamics in which the in beijing are going to try and deescalate now but. the standoff is. much more assertive than what seen in even in the last few years let alone over the
10:16 pm
last 30 or 40 and what will you do we know why is that why why are we seeing a more assertive if not aggressive stance by both countries. well there's there are 2 answers to that i mean the 1st one obviously is that there are ongoing problems in terms of. very disputed line of actual control or l.a. city in which both sides dispute the nature of the line and both countries have been very recently and very aggressively building roads in a way that. ringback makes the other field more insecure that it has to be added to a coronavirus crisis in which china has taken the opportunity as a sort of an early success case at least up until i think a couple of days ago in terms of a disease to sort of well while there's still
10:17 pm
a lot of distraction and india kind of assert their own authority in the region. using the pandemic as a way to provoke india we know that this is decades old dispute is about the border between india and china talk to me a little bit about why it has been so difficult to resolve this dispute. well the border and there are more than there's more than a 1000 miles worth of border between between india and china and there are 2 parts there are specifically disputed this is the western side not dispute which is between. now indian union territory and my dock which was part of the princely state of kashmir and. chinese chinese
10:18 pm
tibet or the tibet parts national are on a special region and china has never accepted the authority of. borders that word grip there were drawn by the british empire and by the british empire its client state like the. like of the state of jammu and kashmir and the prince the state of cut john mccrea smear and what china has been trying to do with this search its own authority. for both sort of geo political purposes but also ideological ones and there was a big challenge in the last time there was a big war between india and china was 962 which followed number of. confrontations and miscommunications. mitzna single unfortunate were out of time but we appreciate your insights tonight and none of the malone in

the department of war studies at king's college london thank you thank you very much. venice has reopened its labyrinth of canals in streets to international tourists it's an important step after the pandemic shut down venice sees more than $300.00 travelers a year for every one of its inhabitants but many venetians are now asking can their city withstand a future. on the past. venice is legendary waterways without the masses a rare commodity here gondoliers are slowly returning to the cities can now but so far only a few visitors have indulged themselves. usually packed with tourists at this time of the year piazza san marcos seems almost deserted after the coronavirus crisis brought the city to a near standstill venice is gradually opening up to visitors again. but not
10:20 pm
everyone is looking forward to the return of the masses jane demo still sees this as an opportunity for a much needed change she has been advocating for a more sustainable form of tourism one that doesn't put the future of the city at risk the problem with venice is that it's in an extremely fragile delicate system and and you can't just do anything you like to venice it needs to be. treated carefully otherwise there wouldn't be any venice left in the future and we need to be responsible about. the legacy of venice and think about what venice has given to us other people have a right to get that too she tells us venice has a unique way of life that is threatening to disappear genda most of wants to risk to engage with the city again spending more time in restaurants and museums and not rushing through in
10:21 pm
a few hours. the city's population has dropped from 175000 after world war 2 to just above 50000 inhabitants now a fraction of the roughly 30000000 visitors who come here every year critics say venice has been suffering from over tourism for too long it has driven out residents were simply made the city unlivable for them the coronavirus crisis now has given venice a break from cruise ships and daytrippers but for an economy almost entirely depending on tourism reinventing itself poses a great challenge though the last months without guests were difficult for nicole he still imagines a different future for his city the co-author of the upscale pisano hotel once his guests to enjoy a slow as he calls it true venetian experience the huge throngs of tourists in the streets could be reduced through better regulation if. there are days we have too many people that walk is because.
10:22 pm
of the events of the city because. they're bored in the. same period of the festival of the scene and the thing. opening of. unity and i mean. we should do. more to organize it. in the 6 months. while many agree venice needs to change the way it handles its visitors the city's tourism counsellor wants to further assess the situation before applying any dress. measures. this is not a museum or. if we don't put together you know some campaign there are other city in the world i don't think so many many people speak about the with. the tourists now there are 1x5w3xw on song and it's not true i want to
10:23 pm
count i will know how many people concert. every day and i know. for resident and activist jane a musto just empty words right now that doesn't seem to be political will at all i think that politicians it to think has done making money out of venice in this short tat and by thinking in that way that kind of killing the goose that lays the golden egg with travel restrictions now being lifted all over europe the nations should not take too long to decide what kind of future they see for their city. sports news now new york governor andrew cuomo has announced that the u.s. open will take place despite the coronavirus pandemic the u.s. tennis association says it will hold the tournament in august without fans and
10:24 pm
that's despite top players expressing their concerns about participating due to the spread of the virus cuomo says the u.s. tennis association will take extraordinary precautions to protect players and staff including testing additional cleaning and extra locker room space. arbutus league action they've done it again byron munich has been crowned bundesliga champions by defeating their braman one nil on match day 32 just happened no other club in the bundesliga has secured the crown as often as byron munich they won the last 8 bundesliga titles and the last time that a club other than fired became german champions was bruce you don't win and that was 8 years ago under former coach you know the name your clothes. are for more now let's cross over to our correspondent bustin hard to he followed that match with some fans in munich good evening to you so if these were normal times of byron munich at one we would see people all over the place celebrating but
10:25 pm
these are not normal times so how are people celebrating tonight. these are not normal times brant and you can see behind me there's a few people at this bar where we're out in downtown munich now it's a lot quieter than it would be in any other given year i spoke to the owner of this bar before and he told me that usually different you would have expected 6 to 800 people here where we are right now right now you can only you can only see a few people that are here but he told me that tonight there's maybe 200 people because he can't let it in as many people as he would like because of social distancing rules so obviously it's not required also the bar in theory would have had to close some 20 minutes ago but police are a bit more lenient on a night like this so they're letting people stay and finish watch watching the game also what we're not going to be seeing this year is after the season there's usually a huge party when by and when the title at merion plots which is the main square in
10:26 pm
downtown munich where there's thousands of people who gather and to celebrate and the team comes out onto the balcony of city hall all that won't be happening this year brant yeah and i can also see behind you that there aren't a lot of saints masts there have played either interesting to note let's talk about byron munich it's their 8th title in a row how important is it. well fans here in munich they've become used to by and winning the title it's the 8th consecutive title you said that and i think that fans here they're more disappointed if i aren't don't win the win the title then they're excited if they do now having said that this is only one of 3 competitions that fire in this year the other is the german cup and the most important one is the champions league they're still in that competition as well and if they win that they haven't won that since 2013 so 7 years and that would be a huge deal if they did win that this year then you could expect to see very
10:27 pm
different scenes here in the streets of munich despite the pandemic brant already has bastion hard to make in bavaria as byron munich when there ain't been this league title with a muted for celebration this time thank you. and quickly as a reminder of the top story we're following for you researchers in the u.k. say they've identified the 1st drop that significantly reduces the risk of death in patients with severe cases of coded 19 in a major study the low cost of steroids did dexamethasone was found to cut deaths by a 3rd in patients on ventilators a system in patients receiving oxygen. you're watching news from berlin after a short break i'll be back to take you through the day stick around we'll be right that.
