mark zuckerberg facing neighbor a volt over his hands off of crocs choose inflammatory posts a host of companies pulled their ads from the social network platform in protest and russia marks a special victoria day with a display of military muscle pushing inside pandemic concerns that had delayed the brave last month we look at what a public vote on constitutional reforms tomorrow has to do with today's celebrations. i'm sorry kelly walk into the program health officials in the western german state of north rhine-westphalia are conducting mass coronavirus testing they have reimposed lockdown measures on hundreds of thousands of people and this decision follows a major spike in virus infections at a meat processing plant. germany also facing fresh outbreaks in other cities just
5:02 pm
as the summer travel season gets underway. this is what it looks like when the coronavirus restrictions are back long lines that formed outside the testing facilities in the district of. the new restrictions here and in neighboring vive and off took effect at midnight mass testing follows a massive coronavirus outbreak at 10 years slaughterhouse where more than 1500 workers have contracted covert 19. now some 600000 people are affected by the restrictions that are in place until next week at least. i want to get testy out and do my part to find out about the situation and whether we are all infected or not. we want to travel to the very on saturday and the condition is to present a negative coronavirus test and that is our goal. summer holidays are about to
5:03 pm
begin but officials in popular destinations like the various say that brutal slow residents are not welcome unless they show proof of testing negative for the virus neighboring country austria has gone even further targeting germany's most populous state as a whole. our neighbor germany with its state of north and the failure has shown how quickly the situation can turn dramatically so we were there for forced to issue a level 5 travel warning for the state of the hope of course that the situation there were quickly improved and that there won't be a further spread across germany and some. relief to see here. overall numbers are still low in germany but the latest local outbreaks are causing concern the meat processing industry in particular is under pressure dial living conditions of the workers are blamed for the spread of the virus 23 workers have
5:04 pm
tested positive at the visa who planned germany's biggest poultry plant mass testing of over 1000 workers got on the way today. and let's get more now we are joined by dave you reporter i mean s.f. who is outside the good to slow district and ministration office we've been hearing from local officials there tell us more. i was there so the good news from the district administrator today he said that out of 230 tests that they have the results back for 229 were negative and one has to be redone he said that this shows that they have the situation under control that the covert 19 virus has only spread among the slaughterhouse workers who have been in quarantine for so several days and that the general public here has not been infected that only represents a small number of the tests that they've done so far we were at the testing center
5:05 pm
this morning with really long lines and the medical workers there the health workers there said they're testing at a very rapid rate of $100.00 people per hour we actually talked to the doctor who's in charge of that program and here's what he told us. dimensions and discipline yet people are very very disciplined i'm understanding it online everyone wears a mask and observes social distances and this month they've accepted longer waiting times more the long lines show that there's a great need as well as a lot of fear and insecurity we're trying to help and to provide answers whether someone is sick or not. until and let's talk a little bit more about that fear and insecurity because i mean this is a localized outbreak but it's getting a lot of attention you know due to that fear. of of the virus regaining traction in the country how are people reacting and therefore nationally and beyond. well that's a good question i mean if you look at the numbers 229 negative tests out of 230
5:06 pm
sounds like really good news but of course everybody is expecting the worst here because of what happened at the turn a slaughterhouse where every day that more tests were done more positive results that is infections were found in the population of slaughterhouse workers so when we're dealing with a virus everybody seems to be insecure especially other states in germany who want to prevent that. i was from coming to their state so they don't have to go through what north rhine-westphalia went through there's been some travel restrictions put on people from this area but that's also why there was so many hundreds of people in line today because they want to get their papers in order to show that they don't have the virus so they can go on their summer holidays absolutely and you can't really blame them there there's also a smaller outbreak at a poultry plant also in northwestern germany what's the story there this is also been a source of fear in view this housing that's north of here in
5:07 pm
a different state there was an outbreak at a poultry plant as you said 23 positive tests that infected people but that was only out of 50 people tested and they have 1100 workers there who they want to test all of them so we really don't know how big that outbreak has been so far they're continuing work there they've put people in quarantine and came in contact with the infected individuals but again after what happened 10 years i think a lot of people are skeptical that they can keep this under control i mean as safe and good has left on the story for us thank you thank you sarah. well here are some more developments in the pandemic around the world india has registered 16000 new cases its highest daily increase yet the government has called in the army to manage new treatment facilities in delhi coronavirus deaths in latin america and the caribbean now exceed 100000 the e.u. may ban travelers from the u.s. for example and russia when it reopens its external borders according to the new

york times australia has recorded its 1st ever virus related fatality in a month after an 80 year old man died in the state of victoria. well meantime in other news how effective is the media being in covering this pandemic all that is the focus of did abuse global media forum which kicks off today in just a short while we will speak with an investigative journalist and ask him how he views his role in covering this crisis but 1st here's a closer look at how some of the world's most powerful leaders have sought to distort media coverage which in some cases includes open feuds to their own advantage. a country overwhelmed by the coronavirus brazil struggles to cope with what has become the 2nd highest number of deaths in the world but even the more than 50000 deceased haven't stopped populus president. from slamming lockdown

measures flouting social distancing and refusing to wear a mask he has repeatedly attacked the media. with the press listening here i can't be comfortable you understand what i'm doing and what i'm not doing if the press were honest i would have no problem speaking to reporters but they are dishonest. several prominent brazilian news organizations have seized reporting from outside of the presidential palace after facing insults and threats from both sonora supporters. the coronavirus has also fueled populism in the u.s. the country currently leading the covert death count president trump accuses the opposition and the press of misrepresenting his handling of the crisis and china's role in the outbreak. you don't hear them talking about. them to be specific covert 90. that game gets further and further away from china as
5:10 pm
opposed to calling it the chinese virus in india muslims are a frequent target of president modise divisive brand of politics the latest attack came when a mosque became a covert 1900 spot members of modi's nationalist b j p party accused local muslims of deliberately spreading the virus you're going to india would have been free of coronavirus by now but these people have acted like suicide bombers these bombers should face the strictest possible legal actions they should be punished in a way that generations to follow will be too afraid to commit such crimes. courses of them. through the uncertainty of the pandemic many citizens are looking to their governments for guidance but in some hotspots where the virus has surged so have polarizing views discrimination and attacks on the free press. and let's get more
5:11 pm
on this we are joined now by john allen namu an investigative journalist based in nairobi kenya who has uncovered stories of corruption and impunity welcome to the program and thanks so much for joining us and john allen i'd like to begin by asking you because you you've been looking we've been looking excuse me in that piece about how populous leaders are using this pandemic in order to fuel division in society and also target the media for its reporting is that something that you're also seeing playing out where you are. well not specifically where i am in terms of targeting the media but our neighbors to the south tanzania have had a very torrid time when it comes to reporting of 19 and he's reporting it in your bend at the end of watching it accurately the president john mark malkoff we has led the charge in this feuding essentially the conventional knowledge about how $1000.00 has spread what measures can be taken and if at all 1000 is as going to
5:12 pm
just as as has been you know has been said by the world health organization that something that we're seeing across the borders i think internally what we've been seeing is is perhaps that the fallout from application of 1000 restriction measures for instance with the curfew measures that what put in place and in march in kenya we've seen a huge number of deaths not to about 17 human rights organizations are reporting out of there directly as a result of the enforcement of a curfew we've seen an upsurge or at least more reporting about police brutality and there's also fears of being stalked about to the restrictions that kenyans might face which week with regard to the imposition of certain parts of the public order to restrict it's meant and those kinds of seeds so that's essentially what we're seeing so tell us a little bit more about how you see the media's role then therefore in all of this
5:13 pm
because you were part of a panel discussion earlier today and it had the title the blame blame game what is the media's responsibility in the coronavirus i mean we have these political forces that we're mentioning we have we have the media how relevant is that question and that that balance sometimes divide in kenya. i mean it's incredibly relevant and i think one of the things that we need to do as a media 1st is start to explain better some of these a bigger more logical terms that we're hearing and a lot of the medical jargon that we're hearing about called it 1000 what does it mean and specifically when it comes to the numbers not just reporting the numbers by themselves but by contextualizing what those numbers imply for us as a society we've we've very recently had a huge upsurge of numbers we're now when past 5000 which is not big if you want to
5:14 pm
compare us with brazil but in recent times this has been a very big upset how we would we can texture lays out for people living in informal settlements for instance would we say that the measures that are being applied across the country should be applied you know one size fits all. means given that social distancing is anathema to how people within informal settlements live how do you apply these kinds of restrictions to ensure that these things don't interfere what least will enjoy the lives of people in such a read as that their rights then become a question so i think finally it's to set us up yeah so sorry john allen emma we have we have to actually leave it there but but so many really important questions that you raised and so much awareness that you're bringing to the table here as you mentioned you're an investigative journalist in kenya and we thank you very much for joining us here on the program. thank you.
5:15 pm
well the cove in 1000 pandemic has disrupted global trade giving nations a chance to rethink their dependence on imported goods now uganda's president wants to reduce the country's dependence on products from china and support local manufacturers the move to produce more goods at home is putting fresh scrutiny on china's economic practices in uganda and beyond. outside uganda's capital kampala these women and men have a tight deadline to produce half a 1000000 fist musts within 8 weeks they team leader at this government facility once to demonstrate that ugandans can make products that were previously imported how do you go to a hardware store and you can't find a single item that is made in them even a bowl. and on thing to them or from the over the roof of a broom things like. what is there in persisting. exporting or all cotton.
5:16 pm
to end up important coverage when. uganda wants to reduce dependence on imports this electric bass for instance is made by a ugandan company this state does fully funded it as a way of showing how the country's resources can be used instead of simply being exported as raw materials minium that is part of this fuss and is really discussed here the bump on the floor this steel which is the biggest component on this bus we have and all and with and is now said contracting that and localizing the supply chain that fuels production in manufacturing last year you're going to spend more than $880000000.00 on importing goods from china alone researchers see that
5:17 pm
uganda can keep that kurdish if locals produce the goods however the local economy could still lose out if the factories at home owned by the chinese who can rip the profits. some also argue that because china relies on africa's raw materials and its market it might not be ready to lose its to the locos whatever china wants too much of it they come and get here they pick it and grow much are they going process and they bring it back now you're telling them that you know you guys we are going to we want to start our own business entirely what you told them is please get out of here. you do things you break in the ship but that does not seem to deter professor from training up ugandans he's hope is that embracing technology will improve uganda's chances of becoming more self-reliant. have

a look at some other stories making news around the world heavy rains have triggered floods and landslides in parts of eastern and central china more than $200.00 hectares of farmland and hundreds of houses were flooded in the eastern and who have province in central hunan the rains breached downs and displaced some 60000 people. the trumpet ministration is threatening to add tariffs on various goods imported from the e.u. in the u.k. cheese yogurt and all of us would be affected as well as whiskey trucks and aircraft the u.s. plans 3 point one $1000000000.00 of new tariffs. what we have now to the united states were a growing list of companies is set to boycott facebook the companies say that they will stop advertising on the platform in the month of july the move follows calls by high ranking politicians and rights groups for advertisers to use their money as leverage to force the social media giant to take tougher action on the

misinformation and hate speech. reporter rebecca reuters is on the story she joins us now here in the studio not the 1st time that mark zuckerberg has faced this sort of criticism so so what's going on this time well we're talking about some pretty big companies like the popular outdoor brand north face patagonia is another one and just today ben and jerry's ice cream of the latest big name to join the growing list essential telling. enough is enough they're rising up against facebook continuing to allow inflammatory rhetoric and misinformation to fuel division and hate in the u.s. particularly this time when there's a lot of upheaval already going on in the u.s. now it's comments like this one from president donald trump in which he posted in late may there it is when the looting starts the shooting starts how many took it as an incitement to violence against black lives matters protest that blacks. lives
5:20 pm
matter excuse me protesters out as a comment that even facebook's own employees had kind of fearing for their lives basically it led civil rights groups to launch this campaign stop hate for profit now in a strongly worded statement the campaign accused facebook of amplifying i think we have it we might be able to pull it up for you but if not it's amplifying white nationalist allowing incitement to violence and turning a blind eye to voter suppression something else that trump has also posted controversial comments about now this campaign ams to his facebook where it hurts advertising dollars advertising makes up about 99 percent of the company's revenue and with such great big brands joining i think it's likely that we'll see others following suit so what is facebook's response well facebook are responding as many companies do in such situations big companies throw money at it and hope that the problem will go away among many things they've listed in a new blog post they have promised to invest more than a $1000000000.00 to support black and supplies and communities in the u.s.
5:21 pm
now to be fair facebook it they've also announced a new feature on the platform aimed at amplifying black voices and they also say that they want to increase representation of people of color in leadership by 30 percent in the next 5 years so these are all positive but we're not seeing in that blog post is a commitment to make this kind of. speech this sort of like inciting incendiary divisive content such as that by president trump is put on the platform and that's basically what critics really want to see and including many of facebook's own employees did have a reporter about courageous thank you. for. while a group of residents in egypt's capital cairo are fighting against construction that will bring hundreds of thousands of cars just outside of their front doors the government says that the new highway is necessary to improve life in the crowded city and the apartments were built illegally but attorneys and neighbors say the

government is and. the view is certainly unusual but it's not something i can enjoy the government is building a fool lane highway overpass just 50 centimeters from his balcony. scene of 750000 cars and trucks will be whizzing past his home every day the 55 year old jokes about opening a snack bar in reality it's no laughing matter. i find it depressing they didn't give us any warning they started building without informing me. it's hit me really hard because in glimmers of the morgue the concrete monstrosity cuts right through a residential quarter of cairo a middle class area home to doctors lawyers and office workers and
5:23 pm
a few small shops. they started building in september the highway is designed to connect the south of the capital with the north it's a prestige project for the government but most residents had no idea it was coming they bought their apartments for up to 50000 euros in egypt that's a lot. my apartment is now under the overpass it's cut off my sunlight and my air it's made the apartment practically worthless there and i've got 2 kids in kindergarten and primary school soon i'll have to breathe in exhaust fumes and be exposed to constant horn honking every day that will kill them but no one seems to care about the health life or future of the children the well head well hell when all is a issue for me as a player. cairo is a crowded and congested city endless traffic jams are the order of the day in the mega metropolis building projects like the new highway are meant to bring relief

the government says individual interests must take a backseat. but lessons are not giving up easily. some may go hard is representing $150.00 plaintiffs from the area and he's putting up a fight with only about a little it's not fair and it's unacceptable we're going to sue the government the amount they're offering in compensation is totally inadequate. the balcony used to be his favorite place quiet with a nice view sued on a farm he will have to seek sanctuary from the onslaught of traffic in duels. russia's president vladimir putin says that the world owes the former soviet union a debt of gratitude for its contribution to the defeat of nazi germany in world war 2 he was speaking at a major military parade in moscow marking 75 years since the end of the war the
