a task of this size can only happen if the world unites we need our best scientists to work together we need all global health organizations to join forces and we need governments business and financial faced to step in and provide funding tens of billions are required and chief international editor richard walker joins us now from brussels with more on the e.u. coronavirus fund raiser richard before we get to the money what's the political significance of this event. yeah well of course i mean the money in itself does have significance in fact the total just over 6000000000 euros has been raised with 5000000000 coming from the european commission and sums of money coming from other donors to germany pledging just under 400000000 or so and you know going to a variety of different aspects of this attempt to coordinate internationally in the fight against the pandemic but if you do step back and look at this from a political point of view i think it's really the instance essentially of the

europeans trying to step in and fill what emerges is this void that the united states might have filled in other times i mean looking back at previous health emergencies for instance you know the last really large ebola pandemic a few years ago the united states really a leading role in leading the international coordination there together with institutions like the world health organization well this year the united states has pulled out of the world health organization there's a president donald trump who is very explicitly less interested in multilateralism as an as an approach to solving problems. and also you have the pandemic in the united states seeming to come back with a vengeance with the number of cases day by day now hitting record levels so you have the united states really out of action on this international level and the

europeans trying to fill that void to do this crucial work. and if we could just sort of drill down into the numbers 5000000000 euros used to sound like a lot of money but it is that a lot these days. well yeah it's true what used to impress us maybe doesn't impress us so much anymore and certainly the few 1000000000 euros are not going to solve the problem to be fair was love underlined the president the european commission is quite open about that i mean she has said many times that you know this is a step by step process and tens of billions will be needed over time. but still i mean here in brussels in a couple of weeks' time there's going to be a summit of e.u. nations trying to find agreement on a recovery fund to get e.u. economies moving after the pandemic as they as they emerge from it and they're

talking of raising 750000000000 euros so more than 100 times what has been raised today so i think many of our viewers watching perhaps from poor countries in the global south might be watching this and thinking will also leave you know the west you have rich countries that are more interested in helping out other rich countries than than helping more vulnerable countries so i think it is going to be a really interesting test in the next few months if the pandemic really continues to get more severe in the global south how far richer western countries are going to be prepared to go to really step up their one wonders if they won't suddenly become more generous richard walker in brussels thanks so much. now to some of the other stories making news this hour. authorities in germany have closed roads to popular baltic coast resorts as summer holidays begin in many parts of the country it's an effort to enable social distancing at the beach crowds of people have

sports to max what was left to play for on match day 34 well by and have been crowned champion a few weeks ago so that wasn't any mystery regards to who would take the title but there was still a few key battles left namely the one for 4th place the final champions league spot that was glad and live accusing both vying for that and further down the table relegation was still a bit of a hot issue because although possible and have been relegated already at the bottom the other 2 teams there was still vying for that 3rd from bottom spot which gives you a relegation playoff to try and save the season after the season ok so how did the relegation saga play out then well it was quite dramatic to say the least 10 goals across those 2 matches and you can have a look at those goals actually braman hosted cologne who had nothing left to play for and despite off posted i went to a new one believe that nothing left to play for and brave and got off the mark rights away scoring early on and then berlin did them

a favor by scoring against us will go off and in the end this will go off how torrid afternoon it didn't really look like they were still playing for their survival and meanwhile braman have had this very very bad season defensively but also in their attack the joint worst attack in the league with disallowed off actually suddenly look at this playing fantastic football little bit of luck then you've got to add that. all big rivals of just a little so perhaps they had an ulterior motive here and were quite happy. you to lose. you can see here another fantastic go on your own berlin wall that's in the distant off matching the coach not looking very impressed with his side meanwhile braman just kept on scoring 61 their biggest win of the season they've only won one home game before this in the whole season so it's really out of character they suddenly found the spot and that's exactly what this will do often turn lacked they just didn't have that fight in them to try and get them over the line and now braman are going to be contesting for that relegation play off and that means the

3rd. from top side in the 2nd which will be determined on sunday they're going to be playing against braman to fight it out who gets to go up or who gets to stay up ok let's go up to the top of the table what about the top 4 who gets to move on to the champions league a little less dramatic. they did win but it wasn't enough they needed got back to lose and strode to a 21 victory so glad i'm going to be going to the champions league as well as well as leipzig dortmund and byron representing germany on that big international stage and just very briefly the bonus thing was a 1st international sports they to start playing during a pandemic how did it go well actually they did rather well i have to say in terms of the health aspects now a lot of people have been a fan of not having fans in the stadium and of course that does make it very eerie and not very atmospheric but overall they've been safe it's a real model for other sports leagues that are starting out now it's been a success and now it's all done and dusted ok thank you max merrill.
