corona virus pandemic came on to say the u.s. and now the record rise in cases with 157000 new infections. in or around the united states 4th of july fireworks displays and parades have been canceled due to the spread of the virus with experts calling on americans to practice social distancing at public and private gatherings not many feel like celebrating the national holiday. has. less chance to enjoy an mt washington mall before the celebrations begin this is where a large crowds will cheer to fly overs and file works on america's national holiday the loudspeakers are ready for tens of thousands of visitors but not everyone here feels will of being among masses of people at the height of a global pandemic and makes me anxious to be like around the crowd to be honest so
5:03 pm
that's what i want to be. but i think i think it. sucks that you know we won't be able to celebrate the way we used to. but we're going to try to make the most of it with you know family and close friends that we've been kind of with during the last few months. this year the 4th of july will be a completely different holiday number one because a security fence will set up you're keeping people away from the wide tolls for security reasons us we're expecting many protests potentially riots on the 4th of july and later on saturday this is where the president will deliver his speech addressing the nation. at the black life's a matter applause a t. shirt vendors are hoping for good business and a large turnout. oh man it's a lot. in the paper. that we have achieved over 200 years. should apply to everyone and obviously
5:04 pm
a. demonstration sure problematical for everyone i just hope that more and more people will wear gold. because that is so critical at this point. the holiday under strain by the pun demick and racial divisions this year not everyone feels like celebrating. and let's cross over to washington now where data is in as paul is standing by him is today's independence day it's a very symbolic and important day for most americans how's the country celebrating this year amid the coronavirus pandemic right very different than from the moment we are here actually right in front of the white house on the constitution avenue normally the big parades here and you know it's a day of joy for many white americans but this time it's led by fear many many
5:05 pm
people we talked to are going to celebrate at home they stay with their friends because they're just worried to get survivors yeah understandably but given that president trump mentioned the coronavirus only once during his speech at mount rushmore yesterday and instead he accused black lives massive protests as of trying to quote wipe out our history let's take a quick listen to what he had to say there is a growing danger that threatens every blessing i read says jews for so hard for struggled they bled to secure. our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history to fame our heroes a race of values and indoctrinate our children. and as i'd like to get your take on that what was president trump trying to change with that statement.
5:06 pm
well i think we have to think about the bigger picture right i mean the corona wires cases are exploding the hospitals are totally overwhelmed and here is the president of the united states not encouraging people to stay at home quite the opposite. that's what like really many doctors and others really say it's not the right thing to do he should be the leader and urge people to do social distancing and wear masks but he obviously does quite the opposite yet not really setting the example you might expect but i'm in this with so much division in the country at the moment are protests expected alongside the celebrations. absolutely and that's another thing from do their mind rushmore not only that you pick those plays this holy place with most of americans who stood in front of 4 former presidents of whom to have been former slave owners and in this time with all the black lives matter is shoes with all the anger and fear in the country he's also stirring up the pot so yes we do expect
5:07 pm
a lot of protests here there are already more than 20 protests scheduled just here in washington we already see on the streets quite some native americans so that is kind of you after the speech you do live it yesterday so yeah we do expect some tense times today i'm sure we will be speaking to throughout the day in this poll in washington thanks very much. and now turning to some of the other stories making news around the world more than a dozen people are presumed dead in southwest in japan after torrential rains triggered flooding and landslides tens of thousands have been evacuated and troops are being deployed for search and rescue operations heavy rain is forecast to continue until sunday. german chancellor angela merkel has paid tribute to the elderly saying they have faced particular hardship and loneliness during the coronavirus pandemic during her weekly radio address merkel urged germans to

protect the elderly by respecting a social distancing rules and ending with her. but after decades of war the pandemic is placing immense strain on medical facilities in afghanistan hospitals face accuse acute shortages of medical oxygen and other supplies needed to battle the virus the country has recorded more than 32000 and fictions but the real number is thought to be a much higher one ex-pat doctor here in germany is doing what he can to help colleagues back at home. assemble software is speaking with a colleague in afghanistan they're discussing how to treat covert 1000 patients who suffer as an orthopedic surgeon who has worked at a hospital in the german state of growing since fleeing afghanistan in 1980 s. deeply worried about the effects of the pandemic in his home country he offers help to afghan doctors online. where 30 years of war has left deep wounds in

afghanistan over the years people who had money those who could would go to pakistan or india or now the borders are closed because of the grown a virus. you can see how bad the situation has become and help bridge and doctors there need training. recently. in kabul dr hobby fata is inundated with patients every day 80 percent of them are infected with covert 19. soffit gives him advice whenever he can via video link and fatah is grateful for the help. usually how to. treatment to the new rich emerge or to do. although cobbles population is around 4000000 it only has 250 intensive care beds for covert 1000 patients many people have to be treated outdoors now the country is facing a new wave of infections officially only $700.00 people have died of the virus but
5:10 pm
each day more and more graves are being dug on the outskirts of kabul. for more i'm joined by alan live from kabul give us a sense of how fast the coronavirus is fighting now in afghanistan. the kora virus is spreading sri marie quickly we saw in the beginning you know there is less than $100.00 cases and then it built up and now we're at a point where every day there's 2345 even 600 new cases registered every single day and the most important thing that we have to remember is that the registered the reported case count is probably only a fraction of the reality for instance anybody that you talk to in kabul or any other major city will think that they have friends and they have relatives who feel as if they have the illness and have essentially just isolated themselves at home or quarantining at home and using over the counter remedies to try and heal
5:11 pm
themselves and you'll see so many people who are going in burying their relatives very quickly and coming back not having proper or funeral ceremonies and things like that so the official count is really by a by a by all that's them it's just a small fraction of the actual toll this illness is taking on the people now the pandemic is striking afghanistan at a time of continued hostilities between the government television and other insurgent forces how are people coping with the health crisis on top of the ongoing instability. so this is precisely the problem ray is that is that we have a health crisis that's only sort of further alumina aided the problems within the health care industry here you know i've spoken to doctors in hospitals who say that they can't find medicine they can't find bleach to clean the floors with they can't find hand sanitizer their hospitals without clean running water so this again you
5:12 pm
know makes people fearful to go to a hospital there even a government hospitals that start segregating patients because they felt it wasn't worth it that they that they couldn't you know take up an entire ward for only a few possible covert patients when they already had such a shortage of food really exposing that and then obviously you know the violence is only adding to it you know because we've seen so many very violent very very dramatic attacks in kabul in the last month alone that once again put the fear back in people you know for a while there was a bit of a law in kabul so they dealt as if ok well now we just have to deal with covert but now it's covert and once again you know not knowing for instance mosques have been attacked a maternity clinic was attacked human riggers were attacked in their cars so it's a state again where people don't feel safe you know in terms of health and in terms of security for carious situation and tade journalist al imitate as speaking to us

5:14 pm
seldom did except in the brenda's league we were always in the stadium. others are just always from what is a sad when you've got the chance again after 27 years to be in the final and to win the cup. never cruise and be fair to berlin's amateurs sede to win their only german cup in 1993 with kiersten scored the winner in a one nil victory and the striking stalwart hopes for an end to the trophy drought for a club the tories for its ability to snatch 2nd place from the jaws of 1st one had just won and i don't on the we could or should have lifted one or 2 trophies we're always close we were in the final twice and when you factor in the last league championships we should have won more i had to munch on and i don't. the current team is desperate for a 2nd german cup captain last bend left that in no doubt. i'm going to move is god's will this year we have the chance and the ambition we'll approach it hungrily tomorrow so that we can finally bring a trophy back to live
5:15 pm
