against the assad regime within its own strong. and britain's lewis hamilton takes the checkered flag for a record 8 times in hungary and grand prix the reigning world champion is an ominous form as it goes top of the driver standings with just 7 races left. welcome to the show you leaders are meeting for a 3rd day as they struggle to reach an agreement on a 750000000000 euro coronavirus recovery plan member countries are divided on how much of the money should be distributed as free grants and how much as loans that need to be repaid are hit southern states including italy and spain are seeking substantial aid payments but a group of so-called frugal northern countries favor loans and more control over how the money is. bridging the gap between the 2 camps is proving to be

a major challenge heading into a new round of meetings german chancellor angela merkel warned that a deal might not be reached today begins today we are entering the 3rd day of negotiations and it is certainly the decisive one the various issues the size of the fund the way it is managed and also the questions of the rule of law have not been examined thoroughly i still can't say whether a solution will be found there is a lot of goodwill but there are also many positions and so i will make every effort but it may also be there is no result is achieved today so it's a plan that you can let's bring in our correspondent barbara visitor who is following the summit in brussels so barbara quite a sober outlook from uncle a miracle there who was echoed actually by luxembourg's prime minister xavier beto she said quote in 7 years i have rarely seen such diametrically opposed positions on many points so barbara why is this summit turning out to be so difficult.
8:03 pm
because it's about money a lot of money and it's about power it's about control over this money and it is really seems to be quite intractable and on the 3rd day tempers are fraying and the gloves come off it seems the european leaders are rather sick and tired of each other and they're forgetting the usual diplomatic politeness the bad boy of the hour has been from the beginning on the dutch prime minister mark rich he has made himself the informal spokesman off the frugal to the countries who want to pay as little money as possible to the south by lee has as much control as possible over this money at the same time that you've managed to set. teeth on edge and she's using the very patient and just listen what hungary and prime minister viktor orban had to say about that. beef. not because of me but because of the dodgy gun
8:04 pm
because he initiated something i think it's ok. something. which is not good quality off you know understanding what you've done is a brick it's because of them not because of the i don't like blame game but the doc is the real responsible man for a whole mess we have. the french president. seems to be rather tired of this whole thing also and several times already threatened to leave the summit so we are firmly into kindergarten games here at this point and the offices for the rest of the evening on not overly positive a lot of these negotiations are talking about money but there's also an underlying discussion about european values going on here so solidarity rule of law is the european union losing common ground in these discussions it rather looks like it sort of verity i mean this just remember during the last weeks of the corona crisis
8:05 pm
everybody says yeah europe has to pull together we have to sort of come out of this crisis together and only together we can emerge from it and now what we see is the usual haggling and squabbling about 1000000000 here and a 1000000000 there i mean this is the biggest economic bloc in the world so it should be doable and also you also see that the underlying values i mean the rule of law that stands for democracy in the european union that is independent judiciary that's a free press free opinion since one is forced are being undermined in some european countries and hungary as we know and poland increasingly and there was supposed to be a tie between european money and keeping sticking to the rule of law and that is supposedly just about thrown under the bus again and so it is all it all doesn't really look very bright so if no agreement tonight then what's next. no agreement tonight means
8:06 pm
another summit horrible to say but true because i'm going to america will send everybody home she chairs the meetings she will send everybody home and say this was not good enough let's try again within 10 days or maybe at the latest 2 weeks we will be here again so let's hope and pray maybe they can still do it correspondent bob a visit in brussels thank you now syrians are voting in parliamentary elections today in areas controlled by the regime of bashar al assad the president and his wife asma have already cast their votes to damascus and those say there are few real choices for the voters as the ballots are dominated by the ruling party and its allies. assad's government is dealing with a devastated economy after 9 years of civil war as well as new international sanctions. the aftermath of an estrich in aleppo province president bashar al assad is reaching at the last pockets of opposition to

8:10 pm
will be overturned entirely following a review. now protesters say the suspension of the execution is a rare example of iranian authorities listening to their demands w.'s jodelle roy is here to tell us more so joel how did this come about well this all kicked off one shoes day last week after the iranian supreme court upheld the death sentences of these 3 men all aged in their twenty's the court said that they were riot leaders who would help set fire to buses banks and other public buildings and that they had found videos of these activities on their mobile phones however amnesty international says that these convictions were based on confessions obtained under torture including beatings and electrocutions now executions are not very uncommon in iran unfortunately but what followed was pretty surprising an online campaign sprung up in which was shared over $10000000.00 times hashtags such as stop executions in iran according to one internet monitoring group net blocks it appears
8:11 pm
that internet access was attempted to be shut down across parts of iran as these hashtags were spreading now the protest was also joined in by some prominent figures including sports stars and actors one of those actors was not seen in by 90 who posted an appeal online which we can listen to now. we're going to visit and put yourself in the shoes of amir hossain morality mohamed and say tom didi the took to the streets for a better life they demanded their rights they peacefully protest it 3 protesters from november $21000.00 after forced confessions were sentenced to death the supreme court upheld the sentence and it may be carried out at any moment. well there were many other such videos posted online and tweets shared around the world even u.s. president donald trump shared tweets saying that these executions would be a terrible signal and today sunday came the announcement 1st to the men's lawyers
8:12 pm
and then confirmed on state television that these executions ought to be suspended and the case is it to be retried so this round of protests against the executions were about protests that happened last november can you tell us more about those process men accused of leading protests in november against a fuel price increases the iranian government more than doubled the cost of fuel overnight and that came on top of other economic hardships that were already in place international sanctions i mean these protests which took place in more than 100 cities around iran buildings were set ablaze police stations were attacks and according to amnesty international more than 1000 people were arrested and almost 300 were killed by security forces in retaliation so now we've had this these these convictions were the most prominent outcome of those protests have now been suspended but lawyers for the men actually hope that they will be overturned entirely upon appeal so this is
