to c.w. news live from berlin the crime that shocked germany goes to trial the man charged with murder after attacking a synagogue on judaism's holiest day makes clear his views i have no problems with religions but i have problems with semitism is what he tells the core which. also coming up u.s. president donald trump changes traffic on the coast in 1000 and demming he warns americans that it will get worse before it gets better and says the people should wear face masks plus the women and children stranded by the collapse of the

so-called islamic state many of them are european citizens we need a frenchman trying to bring his daughter and grandson home. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program a man accused of attacking a synagogue in germany in the city of hala last october then murdering 2 people has made clear his anti semitic and racist sentiments as the trial began he told the court quote he had no problems with religion but a problem with semitism he also made racist remarks. under armed guard and wearing a coronavirus face mask 28 year old stephan b. was led into court to answer for one of the worst anti semitic attacks in post-war
9:02 am
german history it left 2 people dead but prosecutors allege he intended to kill many more $43.00 victims and relatives have joined the trial as co plaintiffs they want answers but there are concerns the suspect could seek an opportunity to spread more anti semitic hatred. because. the peculiarity of this case is that the perpetrator has already confessed he doesn't deny what he did and i have learned from the files that in the end he only denies his guilt by arguing that he believes that armed struggle is necessary to achieve certain political goals. and. xenophobia and related to anti semitism. it was your last year judaism's holiest day when an armed men tried to storm the

synagogue in halla $52.00 worshippers were inside only the stood in his of the door prevented what investigators say would have been a massacre. the man then shot and killed 2 people nearby this video was filmed by a member of the public the perpetrator live streamed footage of his attack on an internet gaming site. the case has drawn huge interest the start of proceedings was delayed for 2 hours while dozens of reporters and others passed through security. across germany people are concerned about a rise in the number and severity of anti semitic crimes according to official figures such attacks rose by 13 percent last year the interior ministry says right wing extremists are to blame despite that context the authorities say they're reacting to violence with fairness. the defendant is presumed
9:04 am
innocent until a final judgment has been made his statements in the investigation and the videos which are supposed to show parts of what happened do not change anything the presumption of innocence applies without restriction playing. the suspect told the judge today that he liked using the internet because people could talk freely their charms with warnings for instance from the government's commissioner for protecting jewish life that social media gives a new outlet to hatred that's just one of the aspects to consider as the call tries to understand an attack that struck not only against jews but against german society as a whole. and for more on this trial let's bring in political correspondent thomas there or who is in baghdad or hala where that trial is taking place thomas walk us through what happened on day one and what we can expect going forward. this is a trial sorrow that is being watched closely here in germany but also internationally and that was absolutely clear from the 1st day of the proceedings
9:05 am
it was the 1st opportunity for those attending the trial among them many of the co plaintiffs on their relatives to hear directly from the alleged perpetrator about their own his guy but also his his motives it was also an opportunity for people outside of the court to protest to commemorate the victims not only of the attack in khalid but also of right wing violence in germany in the last few decades i actually spoke off the 1st day of proceedings to one of the co plaintiffs who said that certainly off to hearing what the alleged perpetrator had to say he did not belong in germany he did not belong in dozens fired to here but at the same time they said it was a difficult day for co plaintiffs a botched one where they could have at least an initial sense of closure and they believe that that is particularly important in this time when it comes to judging to do this trial here in the city of market and the defendant i mean really making
9:06 am
some horrific statements we have to say tell us a little bit more about him. most of the day yesterday was discussion of question or non so between the judge on the defendant that was the goal of the 1st day of proceedings on in that 1st day of proceedings it was possible to clearly find out from him what were his motivations as you mentioned he did not hide his political views he repeated some of those conspiracy theories that were clear also from the money festa that he published online before the attack actually happened i did one point the judge said he could be shut out of proceedings if he continued or if he expressed hate speech and so at times it was certainly very controversial what he had to say but he did not show any remorse any emotion when he was explaining the day in holland in october last year how he planned it why he planned it and what his political views and motivations are
9:07 am
thomas on where you are there is a lot of international attention for this trial just walk us through why that is. not only many international media outlets but also the proceedings are being interpreted into various languages for example english or russian and there are reasons why this is particularly important from an international perspective one is the fact that the alleged perpetrator published everything online so he lifestream the events and this has being seen as an event that is linked to other similar attacks like for example christchurch new zealand in fact that he found that said for the 1st time on record that he felt inspired by the events in christchurch new zealand in march 29000 so this is something that is seen not only important from a german perspective but also internationally in order to understand how these people actually work their scene obviously as actors but they have connections on they have networks online so this is why this case is also understood as
9:08 am
a president when it comes to these kinds of events thomas sparrow joining us from back to burn as day 2 of this trial begins thank you thomas. well u.s. president donald trump has made a shift in rhetoric over the coronavirus crisis in his 1st pandemic briefing in nearly 3 months trump told reporters that the virus will probably get worse before it gets better noting quote a concerning rise in cases in southern u.s. states he was previously refusing to acknowledge that there is a problem now trump has been reluctant to wear a mask himself in public also change that stance on facial coverings by encouraging americans to wear them have a listen. america's youth will act responsibly and we're asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance wear a mask get them is whether you like the mask or not they have an impact they'll
9:09 am
have an effect and we need everything we can get. and correspondent stefan simons is in washington d.c. he has more about the possible motivations behind president trump restarting coronavirus briefings absolutely appears as the pres if the president really turns around here does are one how do they do create turn and now is facing the coronavirus crisis which many people call here coronavirus coronavirus disaster in the making some experts say we're not even halfway in america halfway in the 1st race however the president is for sure for sure having 2nd thoughts why he's doing this and that is a political motivation of course there is because he is down in the polls specifically when it comes to how american see the president handling the coronavirus crisis or disaster or whatever you like he is really in the basement in
9:10 am
terms of his numbers ratings are not great at all poll numbers not good and he knows even the president knows he has to do something though this is him trying possibly to get in front of the way and and increase his chances of reelection in november because as of now when it comes to handling his management of the coronavirus it really doesn't look too good for the president's staff on time and there in washington also in the u.s. the city of portland has seen further clashes between protesters and federal agents sent by president donald trump to end racism protests there but complaints over law enforcement officers concealing their identities has sparked criticism. clashes between demonstrators and federal law enforcement officers in major american cities are ongoing one side claims to fight against what it describes as police brutality the other to restore law and order the situation has become
9:11 am
increasingly politicized people say protesters these people are advocates these are people that hate our country. this is how the u.s. president explains sending in federal agents. we have federal officers on our streets further escalating tensions and causing harm to portlanders right now. the deployment of these federal officers who answer directly to the white house and operate in total anonymity valid name takes or other visual identification is highly controversial a large likeliest. to conceal their identity it's just a step toward a secret what is america has always been proud of never having had a federal. insurer or its force historically it is usually the republicans who want to limit the influence of the federal government but when it comes to
9:12 am
protesters everything seems to be turned around these days the words and actions from president trump and the department of homeland security and showed it this is an attack on our democracy. the escalation of tensions in chicago has seen trump unknowns he sending federal agents there also this is worse than afghanistan by far this is worse than anything anyone's ever seen. all run by the same liberal democrats and you know what a biden got that would be true for the country the whole country would go to hell with protests not expected to end anytime soon and president trump appearing to capitalize politically to do lucian in the united states puts even program. and let's get a quick check now on some other stories making news around the world thousands of

israelis have protested against prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic business owners and anti corruption activists marched here netanyahu is official residence in jerusalem and yahoo has been under pressure made an ongoing corruption trial and surging infection rates. a hostage drama in western ukraine has ended all of the people being held on a bus have been freed and the hostage taker are arrested by police 13 people were held for more most of the day as the gunman made a move rights demands. chinese emergency services say that they have managed to rescue most of those trapped by flooding in a free province last week and more than 3000000 people have been hit by flooding which worsened when levees dug to keep flood waters back failed and.

well british government minister has said that there is no evidence that russia meddled in the brags that referendum he was responding to a report by a committee of lawmakers that criticize the government for failing to investigate alleged russian interference in u.k. politics the report by the intelligence and security committee says officials turned a blind eye to allegations that moscow was trying to influence key votes. now the british have it in black and white who the kremlin interfered in the 20 fourteen's or not to independence referendum members of the intelligence and security committee also believe russia intended to influence the brics that referendum to help so discord in the e.u. but they say the government was not interested but no one in government knew if russia interfered in or sort influenced the referendum because they did not want to know the u.k. government are actively avoided looking for evidence that russia into field the
9:15 am
report says that the 2014 referendum in scotland in which 55 percent of scots voted against secession from the u.k. was the 1st post soviet interference by russia in a democratic election in the west russian influence is the new normal says committee member kevin jones so the question is who is protecting british public from interference in our democratic process when a no show we found no one is parliamentarians suspect that this is why prime minister johnson delayed the publication of the report for so long 4 years british media have reported on the close ties between wealthy russians and the tory party especially members of the house of lords these relationships should be carefully scrutinized given the potential for the russian state to exploit them the must be complete transparency about any links with russian businesses at every level of
9:16 am
politics and we do know how in respect of the hundreds of lords present the committee calls for a full report on russian election interference. well it's a dilemma for many european governments what to do with citizens who have joined the so-called islamic state in syria and iraq among them women and children many of them are living in kurdish controlled refugee camp. aps their status in limbo european countries are reluctant to bring their citizens back home preferred them to face trial in the region instead of human rights groups say that governments should we pay treat their citizens especially the most vulnerable and deal with them on home ground. the biggest group are french citizens including $400.00 women and children and our next report we need and twangs who is fighting to bring his daughter and his grandson back to france a no he asked us not to use his real name. standing
9:17 am
his ground the former trade unionist has defended workers' rights his whole life but when 5 years ago his 26 year old daughter suddenly left to join isis in iraq he had dropped bottom. if. it was my house came tumbling down on top of me. she had always been a good student and we didn't see this thing coming at all her family is ignore stake but she converted to islam without telling us i told to you know what you're getting yourself into and who these people are that you're joining he. last year his daughter was captured by the kurds and brought to the whole camp he kept in touch with her until she and her baby born in syria then his 5 weeks ago on one is today saying his face on camera for the 1st time he says he has nothing left to lose. i don't know exactly what she did but i'm not the judge she should
9:18 am
be held accountable for her actions and she has the right to a fair trial like everyone else that's the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship we're creating a 2nd going trying to move there and what about my grandson 18 months old he's responsible for nothing more. the french government has only repass rated. 30 children from the council and refuses to bring that women and men. go i did want an issue and we are proceeding according to international law people should be judged in the country where they are alleged to have committed crimes like we take back young children different when the mother agrees that we should take charge of them . but this lawyer representing the families of 40 women in the camps says that approach actually goes against international law. so the kurdistan doesn't exist so there are no judges anti-s.
9:19 am
people are being arbitrarily detained plus their crimes started in france and with that i think they are accused of joining a terrorist organization could move on should be judged here and these children are in mortal danger 300 of them died as all whole and 29000 jews to the living conditions france has an obligation to protect them but his leaving them there to russia is probably. france is not the only country reluctant to repatriate its citizens who left to join the so-called islamic state about 1000 western europeans are still being held in syria and iraq only a few of them have been brought back so far. together with other families on twan has gone to court to force the government to bring back his daughter and grandson he believes repatriation is actually in the government's own interest sonya. during a recent attack on one hand the kurds just open the gates and some women escape to
9:20 am
join i ask so leaving these people in the camps is a lot more dangerous than bringing them back you always wonder if they managed to get away there is a real risk they might commit more attacks here in france or you know he's determined not to lose hope so that one day he can finally meet his grandson. and let's bring in now t.w. correspondent lisa lewis in paris who brought us that report good morning to you lisa just walk us through the rationale why the french government is not bringing these women and men back home to face justice well it's all down to public opinion of course there's one poll from february last year saying that 80 percent of the french i know favor of having these people go to court in iraq and syria when it comes to the children it's not a lot better 2 thirds of the french think that the children actually should stay
9:21 am
down there because they're freight they might get radicalized or be radicalized already so it doesn't really look that good for twan because going against public opinion is very difficult in any country but especially here 2 years ahead of the next presidential elections where all the parties are already preparing that comparing really so then tell us i mean given that given what you've just said and one says that he's now going through the course to try and secure his daughter and his grandsons return what is he facing. well basically you know is that it's an uphill struggle even i mean the french justice system is notorious for being incredibly slow and but although obviously one of these procedures that are ongoing that 2 procedures ongoing could be taken in front of the european court of justice everything might take a lot of time and even if the european court of justice condemned france that doesn't necessarily mean that the country will act accordingly and quickly so in
9:22 am
the past france has been condemned in various matters for example environmental matters ever pollution by the european court of justice and that didn't mean that the country would take swift action really so it's not clear if this will work for the families in france lisa lewis in paris thank you. afghanistan now where years of conflict have left a health care system that is under resourced and struggling even before the coronavirus pandemic hit well now with cases surging there are barely any ventilators and not enough skilled workers to build them but help could be on the way thanks to a team of young afghan women with a keen interest in robotics. this is what the new ventilator prototype looks like and these young women designed it especially for afghanistan hospitals when they're not going to school in herat in the far west of afghanistan they spend their time optimizing robots. the women started working on this
9:23 am
ventilator in may they got tips on line from harvard university specialists it only took them 3 months to finish the prototype it was based on a ventilator from the massachusetts institute of technology that comes in that around $20000.00 but the prototype designed by these young women only cost $700.00 . but when we let it go we decided to build a ventilator in afghanistan because the number of these machines in afghanistan is low we hope it will be able to be used in hospitals. so far more than 35000 people in afghanistan have tested positive for the coronavirus more than 1000 of them have died as a result of the infection one reason is that there are only about 800 ventilators in the entire country all of them are expensive imports the young women's prototype offers
9:24 am
a long term improvement to the current situation. and girls robotics team have built some ventilators and we are in the process of evaluating the quality of their devices the machines must be tested on humans and then we'll be able to use them in hospitals we appreciate their work. and. even in the capital kabul the clinics lack sufficient staff and technology to deal with the corona crisis but the women from the afghan robotics team are laying the foundation for change. for latin american girls turning 15 is a very special birthday it's known as a kids and yet the rite of passage into womanhood a coronavirus pandemic is that exam hurdles to this year's celebrations but as our next report shows a lot of girls in cuba are finding fashionable waist down. schick and safe it's the way to go for young cubans the likes of fia who are celebrating their

queen thing and yet up or 15th birthday during the penn demick. i designed my 15th birthday dress and the mask was very important to me it's a symbol of an important stage in my life which was the pandemic i had to design my face mask to fit the colors of my outfit and it was not just about the combination of colors it was also for security reasons. across latin america turning 15 is seen as a special milestone in a girl's life it's the moment of transition from girlhood into womanhood latinas often mark and yet us with large celebrations including with glamorous photo shoots and d.c. year face masks have become an integral part of their party outfit. for young women this contrast between the mosque and the dress the combination is striking it's a fashion that i think will stay. if you don't. take selfies and it's something
9:26 am
that's part of the whole show the whole experience of the photo shoot of their teeth janja. cuba made wearing masks compulsory early on and credits them with helping the island to contain the spread of the virus. but for these girls face masks will also remain a symbol of coming of age as an extraordinary time. you're watching deja vu news a quick reminder of our top story this hour the man charged with attacking a synagogue in germany on judaism's holiest day has made his anti-semitic and racist views clear stefan was speaking on the 1st day of his trial on charges of attacking the place of worship in the city of hama and murdering 2 people. and what that now you're up to date on t.w.
