this is deja vu news live from berlin and there is no letup in the wave of protest in russia's far east thousands of people rally in the city of coveralls following the arrest of their governor on murder charges they say he's guilty only of defeating the ruling party's candidate in the last election. sounds and standing straight and good of passion for media freedom after dozens of journalists at hungary's main new site resigned in protest after the shocking of their editor in chief. and a big surprise for the reindeer herders in siberia when they pulled the remains of a long extinct believe them.

i'm michael oke who appreciate your joining us protesters in the city of kabul in the far east of russia have taken to the streets for the 3rd weekend in a row tens of thousands of people are calling for president vladimir putin to step down and demanding the release of the regional governor he was arrested earlier this month accused of ordering the murders of 2 businessmen 15 years ago his supporters say the arrest is politically motivated. protesters were out in force on the streets of kabul for the 3rd week in a row despite a ban on public gatherings due to the pandemic. the arrest of a governess sergei for girl has triggered the biggest demonstrations this region
6:02 pm
seen in years the 50 year old member of the opposition liberal democratic party was detained earlier this month he's charged with ordering the murders and attempted murders of several business men 15 years ago but many here see the arrest as politically motivated retaliation for defeating president putin favored in the 2018 gubernatorial election. people sent in i think people take to the streets because their vote gubernatorial election was taken away. with it but these protests are about more than the arrest of big gov it's about fighting back against what they see as president putin's increasingly or far tarion grip on power. with chants of freedom and putin is a thief the protests have become a battle cry of freedom freedom from the rulers sitting more than 6000 kilometers away in moscow whom they see as self-serving and out of touch. but then the market

was sucking up all the resources from the far east and we get nothing in return this region used to be so rich people were doing so well and the production was thriving now all the big enterprises have been bought up by muscovite in the us be genuine sprawled on the air just watching them put ins appointment of a successor hasn't helped that's even though michel dictated you off a member of the same party as for gold was seen as an attempt by the kremlin to assuage locals anger if you know it but the people of could have fired back saying the 39 year old outsider lexx experience and has no connection to the region. the anger against putin ism is rise. across eastern russia and there's no sign that the protests will fizzle out as moscow hopes although police have so far left the much as in peace moscow has a habit of coming down hard on dissent. journalist even good
6:04 pm
has been covering this story for us his assessment now of the protests in russia's far east it's truly one of most surprising protests we've seen in years in russia in all of its 20 years the 1st protests that took place here 3 weeks ago was 40000 people a week later last saturday we saw 50000 and today estimates around as much as 90000 and to put that in perspective there's about 600000 people who live in the city of kabul so it's like 10 percent of the city is coming up to protest the main thing that the protesters have repeated day after day is that they feel that their choice was taken away they feel that even if the governor is guilty of these crimes he should be tried here in combat if they voted for him they feel that moscow the kremlin has now taken him away for a political reason these alleged murders were 15 years ago so if they did take place they believe that the kremlin would have dug this up a long time ago and so they believe that their choice was stolen away and so at the end of the day it's about the right to a fair choice it's called democracy it seems there's also the notion that the

kremlin is hoping that this will simmer down but as we're seeing 3 weeks in it's only growing so time will have to tell whether the kremlin will decide to crackdown or not but so far they haven't. as journalists even. we move now from russia to alleged russian influence in foreign democracies this week the british government published a long awaited report into alleged interference in its political system by russia or its agents the report criticized the u.k. government for failing to prepare for or fully investigate possible attempts to influence its elections and referendums the british parliament's intelligence and security committee looked into the influence of bots in tolls fake accounts used to spread misinformation on social media it found the u.k. was vulnerable to digital influence campaigns by foreign groups researchers have
6:06 pm
been looking into how they can use technology to identify misinformation campaigns spread by trolls dubey reporter even him has been looking into this i it's good to see you here so let's start with this what is a troll campaign and what exactly are they trying to achieve well researchers from princeton university have just published a paper this week that might help us understand this better they've basically trained software that can automatically spot troll campaigns on social media platforms like twitter and reddit where these conspiracy theories where conspiracy theories by trolls sometimes spread and this is how they defined what a troll is their definition is a troll campaign is a cordon needed group of accounts that simultaneously spread a specific hash tag or share a link to a misleading article the researchers focused particularly on a russian group called the internet research in cincy we spoke to one of the
6:07 pm
researchers from princeton university who worked on this and we asked them what do these trolls exactly do. what is obvious about their activity is that they are trying to seize any opportunity to. to to divide people over sensitive or stuff for example like life matters was one of the topic which they almost always are active on that the 2nd one was. a lot they were very active on topics related to islam and infos of these cases they usually pose 2 different and. they pose they posed both in favor of the subject and in about a position of the subject and then the 3rd subject which they are rules are very
6:08 pm
like active since 2015 was of course donald trump of course there's a clear division of labor in the russian campaign so it's obvious that for example they have one department dedicated to targeting the republicans one department in the case targeting the democrats yeah stuff like that. my goodness so if these trolls are essentially blanketing all aspects of politics essentially how can we be sure of anything that we see online well it is getting increasingly harder to be sure of things we see online that's for sure but the lesson is always to be skeptical of whatever you see out there you know pay attention to these chain messages that you're getting on whatsapp or other social media platforms and you know that these troll campaigns are getting more and more sophisticated with time i mean they these fake accounts sometimes actually appear very genuine they've also program them to post about things such as gaming or music so it is getting
6:09 pm
difficult and russian trolls are especially researchers have found especially good at this you know but what there is hope with the science there is hope with this kind of research that if the researchers can develop a software that will detect these campaigns they can also develop the software that can detect and stop these campaigns or at least create some sort of dashboard on social media that can help journalists like us or even the public know when a troll campaign as a told him to resign abraham thanks so much for the fascinating as we just heard from meyer there that the issue of outside interference in the work of journalists and the media is one that many countries are dealing with hungary is no exception thousands of protesters there marched through the center of the capital budapest in support of journalists at the country's most popular news site index dozens of journalists have now resigned over the sacking of its editor in

chief earlier this week his dismissal has raised concerns that the prime minister viktor orban and his national government is intensifying its effort to muzzle critical voices. a sea of solidarity lighting up central budapest thousands of hungary and standing up for press freedom which many fear is disappearing under the rule of right wing prime minister viktor orban the latest victim hungary's most retinue site next to seen as one of the country's last independent media that's made it a frequent target of the prime minister who once called it a fake news factory but its independence has come under threat after an ally bought control of the sites at sales. the final straw came a few days ago when the site's editor and she was fired prompting more than 80 staff to resign on friday. the 1st said. our editor in chief was fired at this story and while i don't want to speak on behalf of all of us to me

this was the red line and i cannot watch that any more. pointed out the. shortly after south of protesters flooded the streets. when they want to find a showed real news and it's getting more and more difficult almost impossible to get that in hungry now we don't know what's happening around us because the state media isn't telling the truth. and honestly regardless of the website the reason why it came to demonstrate is that another independent news portal has fallen victim to the government i really don't like and that's why i came i don't think there's any free press. hungry foreign secretary denies the government poses a threat to press freedom the show me a concrete case one was a journalist in hungary not allowed to write what they thought. index is just the

mammoths were larger than today's elephants and weighed up to 5 tons researchers were quickly called in and recovered several more pieces of a prehistoric puzzle for more than a decade no one in this region has discovered such a well preserved mammoth all of which the lady we don't even know yet what else is in the water there are definitely more remains but we are not yet sure whether it's an entire or partial skeleton of the little playing out in the next few days scientists plan to bring special tools to this remote region in the north of russia they hope that in the mud at the bottom of the lake they will find more mammoth remains on. a reminder now of the top story that we're following few. people in the 4th eastern russian city of coveralls following the arrest of their governor on murder charges they say he's guilty only of defeating the ruling party's candidate in the last election. you're watching the news we'll have more
