terms as a congressman lewis often acted as the moral conscience of the country the vote is an opportunity to be on the right thumb at a district. you know the chance to cast a vote by the people are the people and for the people and icon of the civil rights movement lewis remains a hero to a black community experiencing discrimination to this day. but his compassion was not limited to one cause all of us in 2018 he fought against the trump administration's executive order some parading immigrant children from their parents on the border. some of these young children may never ever see a mother again that's not right it's not fair and it's not just this mural in atlanta georgia is a place where people come to express their grief and pay their respects in life as

in death john lewis looms large. we're going to go now to selma alabama where kyle ghassan from detroit public radio is standing near the edmund pettus bridge kyle it's a nice to see you again and this is going to be an emotional event here i want to let our viewers know something you know this is a man who served at the in the u.s. congress for over 30 years and at one point as you may well know he once famously told his brother i've come a long way from the cotton fields of alabama i imagine that there are a lot of people gathering there today who are feeling the emotion of this. yes michael there are a lot of people who had that same experience has been with coming from the cotton field and alabama still to this day and of course there are people who have benefited from his work in congress and from his work in civil rights so i think today it's it's a mixed emotion as as if there is a time for reflection a time to think about what lewis did for this country it's also

a time to be joyous and celebrate critique the work of him and of course the icons that he served with and admired that you can jr and rosa parks. of course we've heard a little about the historic significance of bridge that you're standing next to tell us about its connection to. play again. this was of course the site of the infamous bloody sunday protest in march much by lewis and other protesters gathered they were prompted by the death of one of their fellow activists jimmy lee jackson galvanized to march from selma to montgomery to protest for voting rights and of course on that fateful day they assembled here at the foot of where not far from where i'm standing marched by to a very narrow sidewalk to the top of the bridge and looks down and of course what they saw were alabama state troopers were given orders to stop them at all costs necessary even with violence and of course that's what ensued when the marchers
