a place where people come to express their grief and pay their respects in life. john lewis looms large. a short time ago i talked to kyle ghassan from troy public radio who witnessed the ceremony from near the edmund pettus bridge bridge was the sight in 1965 of the bloody sunday march galvanized by the death of one of their fellow activists 2 jackson protesters here in selma decided to march from selma to montgomery protesting for the right to vote they organized and on that sunday afternoon they marched 2 by 2 on the sidewalks of the bridge and you cannot see anything achieve the top of the bridge and look down and as they reach that point they could see the alabama state troopers who are assembled and who were told that they were to stop the march with any means necessary and of course that includes some very violent means and john lewis was one of the 1st to be beaten by the

alabama state troopers very badly there was actually blood on this bridge it was hence the name bloody sunday. now some of our viewers may not be aware of this but the man that this bridge is named after edmund pettus was actually a leader of the ku klux klan and a white supremacist why does this bridge still maintain that name despite its symbolism for the civil rights movement. yes the bridge is still named edmund pettus exactly right confederate general he was also a grand dragon in the land when i making member of the station and he was a u.s. senator representing alabama and as many people know a lot of the icons and and monuments across the south are named in an author of confederate individuals and then in this particular case in 1065 as marchers approach this bridge it was still made the right image but it's. today there have
