this is video we do is live from berlin the u.s. and now says it plans to remove one 3rd of its troop presence in germany 12000 soldiers will either be posted elsewhere in europe or head back to the u.s. the plan carries out president trump's wish to punish germany because he says the country doesn't pay nearly enough for defense also coming up as corona virus infections rise again in europe governments are bringing back restrictions just as tourism hubs we can welcome back visitors.
8:01 pm
hocked thank you so much for your company everyone the united states will withdraw nearly 12000 troops from germany president germany as a been paying enough force defense and the u.s. quote didn't want to be the suckers anymore on defense secretary mark esper announced the move as part of a redeployment of forces in europe that he says well strengthen nato take a listen. to current eucom plan we're a position approximately 11900 military personnel from germany from roughly 36000 down 224000 in a manner that will strengthen nato and hance the deterrence of russia and make the other principles i set forth. of the $11900.00 nearly $5600.00 service members we will be repositioned within nato countries and approximately $6400.00

will return to the united states though many of these or similar units will begin conducting rotational deployments back to europe that was the u.s. defense secretary speaking earlier i'm now joined by our nato correspondent to teri schultz in brussels good to have you with us terry now a retired u.s. general and commander of the u.s. army you're been hard just spoke to us earlier and said this and i'm quoting now the decision is wrong by its core what do nato officials say where you are. well i watched that interview with general hodges and he also calls this a gift to the kremlin of course one of nato's core tasks is to deter any attack by the kremlin and so of course i think many nato allies behind the scenes are feeling very uncomfortable about this move in public nato secretary general yen stoltenberg put out a statement on behalf of the 27 saying that that this shows a continued commitment by the u.s.
8:03 pm
to european defense i mean basically he has to say this he can't rile up the largest ally and you know nato is is forced to look at this as as glass half full the u.s. has threatened to do much worse things than pull 12000 troops out of germany they also could have sent the whole 12000 back to the u.s. which is not in the u.s. his own interests but i think nato is you know happy that only you know 6000 are going back terry are there any beneficiaries of this move. well other than if you if you listen to general hodges the kremlin here in brussels i don't think anybody is feeling particularly grateful for this i mean you could look at perhaps belgium getting more u.s. forces you know it will bring in more money if you if you look at the 2000 and some that will definitely be moving to belgium if these plans go through and i would emphasize that this is a plan and there may be many stumbling blocks in its way but i mean belgium is will
8:04 pm
be getting more getting more u.s. forces italy will be getting a couple of battalions so those countries could be happy for more u.s. forces poland secretary esper announced would be getting some more rotational forces although it's not clear yet whether those would be under a deal made with poland by laterally earlier so. inside nato countries really would like to see u.s. troops stay where they are and in fact to be increased not decreased in any way not necessarily moved out of germany so again i don't think any nato allies are cheering this move on so that begs the question terry how does this affect u.s. needle relations. you know again things have been worse between the u.s. and nato when president trump summarily announced he was going to make this move that he was going to pull troops out of germany nobody was warned and that was
8:05 pm
a cruel cruel surprise for both nato allies as well as even some u.s. military officials so this time in the secretary general's announcement and. i noted this very very carefully he said that the allies have been consulted on this move now i know that there was a meeting monday at nato where they were briefed on what was going to be announced today so again if you are nato and you've seen much worse treatment out of washington this doesn't look so bad you were consulted you were told what was going to happen and not all 12000 are going back to the u.s. so it's a matter of relativity really i would say u.s. nato relations have been worse teri schultz certain reporting from brussels thank you. swelling numbers of corona virus infections have forced some european governments to reimpose restrictions on us as a number of states were we opening their tourism destinations will still many tourists
