what will it mean for the video platform and its millions of users plus. sirens blare and poland's capital marking one of the country's most solemn occasions 76 years ago the warsaw uprising against nazi occupation began. a mommy and use of welcome to the show here in germany there's been a sharp spike in the number of new corona virus infections the country's leading public health institute is warning that people are letting down their guard and not observing social distancing measures despite these developments in central lin today thousands of people were out on the streets protesting against coronavirus restrictions police broke up the event. after many participants ignored hygiene and

distancing rules. we are free people chance this crowd during the coronavirus pandemic they say wearing a mask and hearing to restrictions is violating that freedom and it seems thousands agree the mixture of conspiracy theorists far right figures and citizens concerned by the economic effects of the lock down took to the streets of berlin to say the corona virus has been a false alarm. that's just plain scare tactics i don't see any danger i don't know any sick people i knew many sick people in march is vacationers it was really something going on in february and now there's no sick people anymore. i've got a friend who is 93 she's in a care home in her room totally isolated there's no corona in our home and yet she wasn't allowed to leave her room now she's allowed to go out for

a walk again but if she meets someone she has to give their address i think that's extreme but high. demand is back to democracy get rid of the laws that restrict us to get rid of the masks that turn us into slaves. hardly any of the demonstrators were wearing face masks or adhering to social distancing protocols early and police attempted to enforce distancing measures over megaphones eventually dissolving the protest and telling people to go home i gem and politicians mostly condemned the demonstration saying that it risks harming germany's relative success or handling the outbreak. that success might just be why these people feel impatient to get back to normal life but with a fresh spark in covert cases across the country a gathering of thousands of people not wearing masks could jeopardize the freedoms germans are enjoying compared to now. any other countries but

a pandemic. our reporter elaine only found how much fun was at the protest and she spoke to people there a lot of the people i talked to many of them really just concerned about the coronavirus restrictions being put in place by the german government there saying well coronavirus numbers we have a situation here under control they're not diluting the existence of off the virus and saying we need these measures too and they worried about their children not being able to go to school they're worried about their parents not being able to see people but this protest has been used by other groups conspiracy theorists to capitalize on by fire right groups of mobilize for this protest. that was only fun hamish on reporting talks general manager for its u.s. market so the company is quote not planning on going anywhere that's after u.s. president donald trump announced he bans to plan the chinese owned video app because of security concerns u.s.

officials are currently looking into whether to talk could be used by the chinese government as a tool for gathering intelligence. to take quick hits viral dance routines and political activism video is a favorite among teenagers worldwide with more than $2000000000.00 in loads and $17000000000.00 in revenue last year the app is extremely successful and influential but its exploding popularity has also raised red flags and the u.s. officials are investigating whether text talk is a threat to national security there are concerns that the data collected by the app owned by the chinese for by could be accessed by beijing the company denies any connection with the chinese government but donald trump is threatening to ban the app in the u.s. . well look you know we may be betting we may be doing some other things. but a lot of things are happening so we'll see what happens but we are looking at

a lot of alternatives with respect to. one of those alternatives is spurred by duns to give up its ownership of the potential buyers are reportedly already in talks to take over including tech giant microsoft in the face of presidential threats to u.s. assures its influencers and audience that this is not the end. we procure outpouring of support and we want to say thank you we're not planning on going anywhere to talk to the home creators and others to express their ideas and connect with people of different backgrounds and we are so proud of all the various communities that hold to their heart. it's not clear if president actually has the executive power to ban the app in the u.s. but a national security review of tech talk is expected to be presented to him in the coming days and joining me from san francisco is in a fried she's the chief technology correspondent for access hi you know thanks for

joining us so we heard the head of to talk usa they're saying we're not going anywhere how much of that is an empty promise well it's certainly not entirely in tick tocks hands that's what they hope and there's reason to think that a deal should be able to be reached but that doesn't mean that in this administration it will happen who knows with donald trump what exactly is issue is and what will say to it what will solve the issue for tom and we've heard reports that microsoft plans to buy to talk or at least they're in talks to do that the u.s. operations anyway would that put an end to the security concerns of the u.s. u.s. government. well i would have thought so but the administration has indicated in the last 24 hours that it doesn't solve their concerns so i'm not really sure what their concerns are that a deal wouldn't solve but microsoft has apparently and tick-tock have been in talks
3:08 am
they thought they had a deal they thought they had a deal that would please the white house with by selling all of a stake perhaps some of its non china investors remaining investors and microsoft taking over which would seem to solve the security issues but that doesn't appear to be enough so it's unclear what the trumpet ministration once it's unclear what their main issue is if it's a national security issue with microsoft owning its all that it's really puzzling to be honest and i've covered tech for 20 years ok so despite the fact that it's not exactly clear what they want what are the basic concerns that they have with tech talk in its current form. well i think there's up to 3 concerns that the one that's being voiced is the national concern or security concern that data of americans could end up in chinese hands the 2 other things that are at play here that don't get talked about are the broader trade war with china certainly the u.s. and china are at a low when it comes to relations and there's

a lot of threats going back and forth about companies and then the 3rd is donald trump at a rally in tulsa and a bunch of popular to talk users managed to get free tickets so that trump campaign thought they had the rally sold out and in fact it was a prank if you will and that may be weighing on the president's mind it may not but that's certainly an issue underneath the covers no it's clear that this is still speculation at this point but what would that mean for users of the app and there's millions of them if it was banned would just disappear from their phones like what would that look like well it really would say i mean you know in theory the administration could use emergency economic powers to stop the app from being legally distributed so probably at a minimum would stop new people from downloading it it's not clear whether they would force it also off off the air if you will and then you might see users turned a v.p.

ends because it would still be in lots of other countries you might see some of those creators go to other services which would seemingly play into the hands of facebook which just last week was the subject of antitrust hearings we've seen that facebook is also interested in duplicating other apps what it did to snap chat and now instagram is trying to duplicate some of the features of this app so could you foresee that there would be an alternative out there and that this might be one of the goals here. for sure i mean you know if they talk actually does get banned i think you will see i mean the teens are going to suddenly shut their phones and go do something else so they're going to go somewhere to a facebook owned rival it could be to a new start up in a fried chieftec correspondent with in san francisco thank you now to some of the other stories making news around the world. hurricane is a yes has been downgraded to
