a financial hole. or welcome to the show unseen beers in berlin it's good to have you with us microsoft says it's in talks to buy the u.s. business of his social media platform tick-tock the american software giant which owns linked in but which is focused in recent years more business applications like cloud computing hopes to seal a deal by the middle of september behind its push or the heightened tensions between the u.s. and china. office life today would be unthinkable without microsoft word and excel but so far the world's leading software producer hasn't had a social media hit among young people that however could be about to change. president donald trump is giving chinese own social media platform tick-tock 45 days to sell its u.s. business a chance for microsoft 2 8 3 2 2 4 8 9. tick-tock is an internationally successful social video platform that allows users to upload edit

and mima fi short clips and watch clips created by others available worldwide it's owned by chinese company bite dance that's a problem for the u.s. government trump wants to curb beijing's influence in the united states along with other chinese companies might dance is under pressure but china isn't backing down . well look we call in some individuals in the u.s. to listen carefully to the voices of the international community to provide an open and fair environment for each market and its investments in operations in the u.s. to stop politicizing economic and trade issues to stop abusing the concept of national security to promote discriminatory policies at the 2. in beijing residents are you surprised that an app has been dragged into a fight between politicians. yet of our show that i think it's because the united states china relationship has really deteriorated recently.
6:19 pm
we use many apps and software is that were developed by the u.s. to take talk has been successfully gaining many users around the world but i didn't expect that due to political reasons this could affect the economy and even after users personally. see me on my so from microsoft successful ventures into the world of social media have been limited to linked in platform full career professionals but this deal with tic talk could give microsoft a launch of market share with younger millennialism generations ahead with pressure from the u.s. government on tech talk microsoft says it's looking to purchase the american business operations by september the 15th. and let's talk more about this with chelsea delaney from the business shows you could have you on the show we know that there's been a lot of heightened rhetoric in the past few years between the u.s. and china especially as it relates to businesses as well should we believe that this is part of the heightened rhetoric or is there evidence that there should be
6:20 pm
concerns frankly about relationship to china there's no evidence so there's really no hard hard data no evidence that shows that that tech talk has been giving to the chinese authorities but what a lot of what the u.s. administration is saying and what experts are saying is that it's possible so if you're a chinese company you do have a responsibility you have a legal mandate to hand over data if the government asks you for it so that's definitely part of the concern but you do have to take it you know as part of this is this broader backlash and this broader escalation in tensions between the u.s. and china it's not just tech talk that's really come under pressure we've also seen this with holway which is the chinese telecom equipment produced. that is also getting a lot of a lot of. criticism from the united states as well so it's certainly part of this bigger escalation in tensions this strikes me as a sale at gunpoint basically the u.s. government saying you know you're not going to exist or do business in the u.s.
6:21 pm
unless you still can buy tickets which owns to talk and get a fair deal with washington looming over the negotiations it's definitely ultimatum and we've heard from from both the company and from chinese officials today just how angry they are about this they're saying that this is the u.s. trying to sabotage what's become really the crown jewel for the chinese text china obviously has a lot of big tech companies but this is really its 1st big international internationally popular tech companies so the fact the u.s. is basically saying you need to sell to a u.s. company or we're not going to allow you to exist anymore it is certainly being taken quite hard and china today when i think of microsoft i don't think of social media how much of a risk is this for them or is it just upside it's certainly a risky business it is very difficult to make money off of social media but with many of the other big social media companies like twitter snap chat or the other
6:22 pm
predecessors of of tech talk like vine they just really weren't able to make the business side of this work but you know microsoft is a really big company they have a lot of they have a lot of money so they do have sort of deep pockets to invest in this company is huge right now they have about 100000000 users in the in the united states so for microsoft it is potentially a big big market for them to be getting into right now or right from linked in to talk to seems like quite a departure. business for us thank you very much. kenya's flagship airline on saturday held its 1st international flight since march as the country eases coronavirus restrictions a kenya airways estimates the virus will cost between 40500000000 dollars this year as forcing the airline to lay off hundreds of workers and seek government support for. it was

a day of celebration at nairobi's jomo kenyatta international airport after $130.00 days on the ground kenya airways is flying again the airline kicked off the restart of international travel with a flight from nairobi to london we are extremely excited. to start this because. it's been 130 days since we did these. airlines are supposed to fly and so we are back to business the airline is planning to serve about 30 international destinations for now the restart also means a restart of tourism in kenya a boost for the struggling economy i think it's very important for kenya to want to me to be able to invite them to the country. really important especially for a living because it provides a lot of very great for trade attendant. with losses mountain dew to the coronavirus the airline has already laid off more than $600.00 employees and will

soon be read nationalized this means a return to the air will be a return to normal for kenya airways. and let's go now to nairobi and talk to correspondent joy during biro joy good to see was always so kenya airways was already in trouble before the pandemic isn't that true. that's a very true steve and kenya airways troubled started as far back as 20142015 where the deed encourage huge operational costs occasioned by the patches of new aircraft or new planes dreamliner is and then there was no demand after these planes will reach really deep deep their revenues and then we did have also over time and over the years we've had issues to do with a drop in crude oil prices as less as the outbreak of ebola that happened in 3 to
6:25 pm
p.p. in the deed effect as well revenues for the airline because most of the air traffic in africa for kenya airways comes from west africa and then the other half comes from outside of africa a good point there ebola now coronavirus is government renationalisation really the only option for the airlines here it appears seoul from villages latest point of view. say that if kenya airways was to pay back what they owe the creditors then they will have to wind down the airline but as easy have tried different options to date restructuring as well and be monish men strategies have been put in place but the legislators did use the example of ethiopia airlines when coming up with a decision to nationalize or to read nationalize the airlines saying that if you could be airlines who do well being funded by the state then kenya airways as well might as well go the same route and hopefully these schooled years revenue but
6:26 pm
critics say that kenya airways was there before it was privatized so we can't guarantee that this time around he's going to be a turnaround with revenue. all right choice arena beer there for us in nairobi thank you very much. well staying in africa zimbabwe is having an especially hard time right now the economy is imploding inflation is exploding and more than 700 percent the 2nd highest rate in the world and lock down has cost many people their jobs some resorting to unusual or even illegal ventures just to make ends meet. she used to work at a bank now cynthia done to us those food and other everyday items out of her car in a suburb of the capital harare and she's not the only one. they're not jumps at the moment. my daughter doesn't. inform us it wasn't
