place have. and to deal with the coronavirus the time he says he is also one of the 1st to go back to some degree of normalcy what can the world from there and from the. business i'm ferguson thanks for joining me over the past few weeks the united states and kenya have been holding talks aimed at hammering out a trade deal an agreement could serve as a model for other american deals with african countries parts of u.s. president donald trump's preference for bilateral deals over multinational agreements in a few moments we'll speak more about the negotiations with our correspondent in nairobi but 1st let's take a closer look at the 2 countries economic relationship. kenya is considered east africa's economic engine a fast growing country with an expanding middle class well kenya already exports textiles and coffee to the united states a trade agreement could bring further investments in the industries kenya hope soon
8:18 pm
prove standards to meet american export requirements 2 way trade between kenya and the u.s. was a little over 1000000000 dollars last year kenya sold goods worth $668000000.00 u.s. dollars to the u.s. and the u.s. exported products worth $402000000.00 to kenya. pales in comparison with kenya's total trade with its biggest partner china that's 5 times as high. so more let's bring in our correspondent in nairobi joy to reindeer joy good to see you what are the big issues in these negotiations. well kate over one of the biggest issues in these negotiations are the fact that kenya is looking for a predictable trade agreement with the united states considering that the current unilateral agreement ends or expires in the year 2025 so for
8:19 pm
investor confidence they are looking to a solid predictable agrement the united states so they can be able to offer that city invest right up to the year 20000 to $5.00 and also they're looking to expand the range of goods exported to the united states as well as look into offering more job opportunities for kenyans in the united states because under the current agreement and goa this has not been happening because it has been more of the united states benefiting as opposed to how much kenya is benefiting from the current agreement that they have and go on now kenya has a much bigger trading relationship with china than itself with the u.s. america trying to play catch up here yes and these conversations have been going on for some time about how america is playing catch up but also on
8:20 pm
the other hand the united states is kenya's largest export market and so caught up with might not be the case this time around but maybe now looking to defend those relations in terms of investment in kenya knowing that some of it is being lost to china as well and also china has gained a lot of momentum on the african continent in terms of trade partnerships so there could be some competitive age that the united states could be trying to catch up. and do you think an agreement with the u.s. could influence kenya's trade ties with europe. not up the moment because currency kenya is negotiating or has kicked off talks we've been i think kingdom to see how different the can move forward right after breakfast in december of 2 of the 20 kenya's president who are working as a husband for the talks with the united kingdom prime minister barak johnson and
8:21 pm
those talks also started the beginning of last month which was july and among the issues that they're looking at of course is also to see how different the trade agreement or economic partnership agreements are going to be different from what was happening before when the e.p.a.'s were under the european union in general so those talks are ongoing and also kenya has fronted issues like. this before kenyan citizens who are working in the united states and how different that is going to be now that the united kingdom will be away from the european union and so i finally do you think thing you could feel a little bit threatened by kenya coasting ties with. say that again do you think that the european union might feel a little bit threatened by kenya nearing ties with france. i
8:22 pm
don't think so because kenya has been riding on its economic partnership with the united kingdom to reach out to the larger markets in the european union and so having to know negotiate separately with the united kingdom now means that kenya will now have to negotiate how the economic partnership agreement with countries out kind. of the united kingdom will be and in this case the the european union and how best they can now strengthen those ties because the united kingdom has been one of its strongest partners and helped kenya connect with the rest of europe through this partnership so i trained there and i read and thank you so much. a day after receiving another batch of stacie aides german travel group to me has hosted. revenue is down a staggering 98 percent amounting to
