tobacco industry is in danger of going up in smoke. this is day to day business i'm robots in berlin it's great to have you with us 5 g. is spreading around the world high speed mobile internet networks have already been installed across the u.s. in many parts of europe and in asia meanwhile in africa south africa is seeking to be the continent's 5 g. pioneer. the 1st high performance antennas are already in place here in johannesburg one day they'll be pumping out super fast 5 and 10 it it can be used to control robots discover augmented reality and power the internet of things that is if the power itself doesn't feel a recurring problem in south africa nevertheless the operators are optimistic and so their figure for example your fixed font their traditions or this is. so what
8:18 pm
you find is that a number of these areas will not get fog. so far g.d.p. should have potential to offer our block services in these areas. but the reality is still different large parts of the country still have no internet and 4 g. is only white spread in the big cities the rest of the country is cut off from the modern telephony or enjoys only 3 g. speeds 40. 5 little public seems to me. so when we're talking about i see an iteration it's great to be quite slow and middle only in the beginning they do the more i learn. with. you know like they can get a huge take on the news. even if south africa hopes to pioneer 5 g. on the continent this technology will only reach
8:19 pm
a select few most of the country's people live in abject poverty and this situation has only worsened the. problem as i speak to our reporter chelsea delaney welcome along chelsea so we'll talk about the global fixtures shortly but in africa with 5 g. how much progress has already been made well very little so far we do have south africa beginning to roll out some $500.00 services but it's really the only place and africa that's been able to do that so far and really there are a lot of constraints or african telecom companies it's extremely expensive most companies have to invest billions of dollars and to the into building up these networks and in africa it's unclear if they'll be able to get that money back because most customers aren't going to be willing to pay the very high fees for $5.00 g. phones or 5 g. service so there's really not a lot of incentive for them to be spending all of this money on $5.00 g.
8:20 pm
networks at this point meanwhile in europe it seems at times like 5 g. masts a popping up all over the place for europe how much work is best. to be done there's still definitely a lot of work for europe to do there are certainly farther ahead than africa but they are certainly lagging places like china south korea the us that have been able to launch these very widespread networks at this point so there are about 17 countries and europe that have launched 5 g. services but there are the coverage is quite spotty it's really a patchwork of different services and there's still as in africa our constraints it's the 5 g. phones still are widely available they're very expensive and that's not even talking about the industrial uses of 5 g. which are expected to be really the future of this technology so things like connected factories driverless cars that's really where 5 g. is supposed to be particularly useful and that's a much more difficult and
8:21 pm
a much more expensive. way to go forward so there's still definitely a lot of work here as well when we talk about 5 g. we have still about qual way the united states and the fact that president trump's white house doesn't want to european allies to be involving the chinese tech company in their 5 g. networks all european come countries are they are the heating that coal from america so there have been some countries in europe that have put in place restrictions on hallway france for example has put it has not completely restricted holway from its network but they have put in place some restrictions europe as a whole though has not wanted to ban holway they say they do you really want to diversify the suppliers some telecom companies are much too dependent on hallway they don't want them in their core network so they are going more towards companies like erickson or nokia which are european companies but we haven't really seen countries implementing large bans and in part going to really rely on what germany
8:22 pm
does germany is under a lot of pressure to exclude holway chancellor merkel has that she doesn't. want to implement a blanket ban on hallway that they are expected to make a decision and the next month or so they've said they're planning to announce what they plan to do in september and that really what determines the future of holloway and your up we have seen countries changing their policies on huawei the u.k. was one of them now it's not involved at all and it's. any thanks for bringing us up to date. now it's been 3 months since greece reopened to tourism one of its most important industries of course the sector accounts for a quarter of greek g.d.p. with $33000000.00 visitors a year in a normal year that is but 2020 has hardly been a normal year. tourists are returning to sun to renie if spearing really normally the alleyways are full at this time of year but this summer many hotels

this is malawi's main to bacco auction house in the capital a long way. unlike in the past when the auction floors would be population with tobacco farmers this time no farmer is allowed inside. authorities say this is to prevent to control the covert 19 pandemic. capacity study a 35 year old father of 3 has been waiting outside for his tobacco to be sold but the price offered this year is low. to fasi grows tobacco in his village 70 kilometers outside the capital he obtained a loan from a tobacco company that enables him and others grow the crop on a contract basis. but capacity claims that it is the same company which buys the crop at very low prices this is left him with more deaths to settle. he remarked. i'm not growing tobacco any more for me there's no future in tobacco

farming i don't want to go into more debts as such i will embark on a different kind of farming. teresa 10 wicca and is a public relations manager for auction holdings limited which operates tobacco markets in malawi she says new strategies are being put in place to ensure that farmers participate in the bidding process and benefit more from the crop. well covert $1000.00 has negatively impacted on tobacco sales she is optimistic the price will be better for farmers. we are thinking of doing more like i need it shouldn't be the same process but electronically where now the good the bias will be beating secretly but it will be displayed on a screen here in sight that the families will all stick with that able to witness what you can buy at present be on a particular bill and we think that in the long run that will also be beneficial

for the family. according to recent statistics from the auction holdings limited current volumes of tobacco sold on the floors across malawi are less than those of last year during the same period. if the current trend continues it will affect the much needed revenue from malawi whose major foreign exchange earnings is dependent on tobacco. also for me in the business team hey you can find more from us of course on our website there's a little com slash business we're also on facebook and twitter thanks for joining us to.
