well the u.s. election campaign kicks off a real with joe biden and camelot harris laying out their date for power in front of a virtual democratic convention so how convincing was joe biden was he presidential i'm so gail in burlington this is the day. the term drug is called american doctors for much too long joe biden out of the radical left. george fear too much division there's only one thing standing between your family and the radical left wing and that your vote this november i'll be is how i have a life. at stake in this election is the survival of our nation.

because we're dealing with crazy people on the other side it's time for us for we the people come together. also on the day germany's covered 19 case loads on the rise again as the bus reopen and people socialize not everyone is taking hygiene rules seriously another rule customers ever quiet to fill in these contact forms but then name and telephone number but that's also a problem. at all but most does i don't know i can't believe that mr donald duck this weird address came to this look for yourself. in the recent action campaigns kicked off the field with the democratic party staking its claim on the white house joe biden has accepted the nomination for the presidency after this week's a 4 day virtual convention speech to the party and the electorate was the most important of his long political life. former rivals are rally behind him and there

was just a smattering of show business come to the 4th night the final night of the virtual democratic national convention rolled out a show of unity and support for the party's presidential candidates place where former rivals for the nominations praised joe biden's leadership and compassion. democrats have build the choice in november as one between biden's empathy and donald trump bullying and chaos at a time of twin health and economic crises primary against joe biden this is a life changing the election this will determine what america is going to look like for a long long time character is on the ballot compassion is on the ballot decency science democracy they're all on the ballot biden's empathy was underscored by a boy who bonded with the former vice president on the campaign trail over their struggles with stuttering while he described by as someone who cares biden accepted the nomination vowing to heal a country torn by crises and contempt the current president's call american

darkness for much too long too much anger too much fear too much division here and now i give you my word if you entrust me with the presidency i will draw on the best of us not the worst i'll be an ally of the light not the darkness it's time for us for we the people to come together. make no mistake united we can and will overcome this season of darkness in america. darkness dominated the picture at a rally held by trump hours before biden's speech evoking scenes of recent unrest he had a warning for voters. if you want a vision of your life funded by presidents think of the smoldering ruins in minneapolis violet anarky of portland the blood stained sidewalks of

chicago and imagine the mayhem coming to your town every single town in america you're not going to have law and order. might encounter that mood with the means of hope and unity in the speech that marked the high point of his half century in politics. he now heads into the general election campaign with a clear and steady lead in polls over trump. but after the carefully scripted convention the coming weeks will mark a far less predictable period for joe biden and his democratic party. let's have a closer look at the candidates in the speech of this convention with that tyson botha tyson served as a senior advisor in the u.s. state department during the obama years and he's now a fellow at the truman national security project involving welcome to d w so we only heard clips of joe biden's speech but it sounded like the steady kind of unity in togetherness speech you might accept from any candidate this not donald
12:07 am
trump what did you make of it well i mean it clearly the big themes of the of the entire convention where the idea of unity and empathy and really what's striking is how a political the entire convention was it was 4 days of saying you know we're all americans political identities are secondary to our national identity these kind of things and that this is an inclusive pluralistic style of democracy in contrast to of course president trump by. it was a pretty stark speech i mean it was i represent the light against the darkness i see you know this is this is kind of star wars language thing right so who what is who is the darth vader in this is the scenario ok a nonpolitical political convention but where was the file where was the tosh and where was that the yes we can where was the make america great again a lot of that stuff came from well 1st of all it was a lot
12:08 am
a lot of what is at stake you know michelle obama put it on the line the 1st night of the of the convention saying you vote like their lives depend on it because it does i mean that is putting the terms pretty starkly president obama on wednesday night said you know our democracy is on the ballot and basically saying that you know joe biden is the representative democracy but the big moment of the convention i think was the roll call itself where as opposed to just having a roll call in a big convention center they went to all 50 state and 8 territories getting a peek into every representation from every state and territory having normal people just make the case for their state and they and their candidate that was really moving for a lot of people voted to talk about these normal people who were going to talk about the boy with the stuff i heard about the speech i presumed when i heard about it but it was a cynical bit of political child exploitation the phone put it that way but watching the video itself if i actually found it quite affecting so let's hear from 13 year old braden hunt. and my name is brian harrington lent 10000 years old and
12:09 am
was out joe biden talking to you today about a few months ago i met him in new hampshire he told me that we were members of the same club where we. were. i think that actually back out i have a great big void where my heart should be and that actually that it affected me but this is about joe biden being empathetic so how is the strategy of the 77 year old multi millionaire. emphasizing his empathy how is that working it's i mean it's part of his authenticity right and if you talk about both of these candidates their biggest strength is their authenticity not necessarily their honesty particularly the case of their own trumpet what connects with people is authenticity and with joe biden it isn't pathy and a lot of times that expresses itself in moments that aren't or weren't caught on
12:10 am
camera or not photo ops so for example a representative the 1st trans representative in the state house also spoke at the convention and she was talking about traveling up to beau biden funeral his son's funeral and being there because beau biden in the state of delaware was the person who pushed for trans inclusive rights and saying you know your son meant so much to me and he said your fight is our fight and that is my fight and this was just a personal moment and his own son's funeral these are the kind of anecdotes that really draw out the person that joe biden is so this was a virtual convention because of. the convention as the democrats were holding the virtual convention president trump was trying to steal a few headlines with an in person rally just outside biden's hometown in pennsylvania so how much is the pandemic going to affect campaign big physically as an issue well i mean campaigning is is just completely changed the entire get out
12:11 am
the vote used to be knocking on doors talking to people shaking people's hands that can't really happen so it's become much more electronic it's become much more phone calls it's been much more mailing not just you know ballot mail in ballots but also mailing explanations of how to go to vote it's changed everything the good thing about this convention if you're looking at the process is how well it was managed and if you look at something like this which is very intricate and involves a lot of logistics and see how well this convention was managed it gives you a sense of what kind of leader and manager joe biden could be as well and i think we'll see a little bit of that next week as well the interesting thing about the democrats as they start. to take on a couple the republicans tactics also politically in that they plan to seed next week's convention with a lot of videos a lot of charm messaging chum just like trump always does so easily it's going to be election campaign. i wouldn't imagine otherwise i mean look
12:12 am
at what is drawing a lot of the fire right now joe biden a lot of trump's attacks have not stuck on joe biden. harris probably the best choice he had for a vice presidential candidate they've kind of drawn off the tax there are aiming their attacks on the post office which is kind of as american as apple pie i mean this was the 1st headed by benjamin franklin so the fact that trump is basically sowing doubt on the capacity of the post office and the voting process itself just shows how dirty this campaign is going to get down to us we will speak again about if and thank you tyson baka from the truman national security project in the thank you. germany has recorded more than 230000 cases of coverage 19 since the outbreak began although the latest infection figures are nowhere near where they were at the height of the outbreak this week has seen the highest number of new cases for
12:13 am
a month many of the new cases are amongst people returning from holidays abroad but a significant proportion of new infections is also about people socialising in large groups this report from but we are in the center of a possible corona hotspot but lim central this neighborhood popular for its bozza nightlife is now seeing a rise in infections we are still around but most young people didn't seem to be worried some agreed to talk to us but want to stay anonymous and i understand. that to get infected. well no not at all. i would not go. you know if we don't think about it at all we just want to go out they said that a 2nd wave would come so why would it be triggered by people going out we don't know how long time just around us and the last so you can just keep being scared like. yeah all the time so infections and rising and rising

fast potties on the street problem the bars and restaurants up in the spotlight we're going to check out this iconic buy here in berlin before we go in i'm going to put on my must. inside we see that germany's strict hygiene measures are being upheld people keep their distance and just khyber everyone wears a face mask when moving around inside the customers are allowed to take it off one seated at a table. but that seems to scare people off tonight only a few guests. when coming in their guests who say next door i didn't have to worry of mosque i hear then they turn around and leave so my feeling is that as a bar you are punished when you stick to the regulations another rule customers are required to fill in these contact forms with then name and telephone number but that's also a problem. i can't believe that mr donald duck with this weird address came to the

spot but look for yourself so it's. on your mind so you have all. the district of the limiter ones to fight the coronavirus by making more random inspections now but their resources are limited explains the many. we can only do so much that we have just under 50 employees they work in shifts 7 days a week but we can't do more than just surprise checks. on the inspectors come check everybody but their presence might remind people of just how serious the situation has become. in the end things can only improve if guess show more responsibility. i next report from zimbabwe homes the world's largest waterfall victoria falls 2000000 people a year used to visit the country to see the border closures that come with covered

19 restrictions put an end to that double is privilege most fun here has been to see how badly this is the country's tourism industry. victoria falls it full flow but the a few are around to witness its glory there once bustling resort town nearby is a shadow of its usual self corner viruses brought to business to a standstill at this talk company helicopters often take off in 15 minute intervals to fly tories over the falls now the aircraft are parked on the ground. well the tourism industry has been worst affected is a fairly gutted all tolls are closed or activities are closed the employees are not on the pedals and they don't stream suppliers or was to the industry also affected unemployment has risen and. is healthy has deteriorated everything

is actually been granted to a halt for businesses like at and curio dealers in 1000 feels like a death sentence or knows are struggling to put food on the family table. if you had them times native if you sleep you don't sleep think of how i going to feed my family how our tomorrow we're going to eat because we had to kind of interest more than 2000000 visitors come to victoria falls i knew early but numbers this year have dropped drastically that will cut income generated by foreign visitors to the country normally some $1000000000.00 euros arrivals are estimated to go down by 85 percent. oh rory is it is calling for. showing off yes but seriously
12:18 am
if you people are coming in to witness this look trickling in there you are clearly there but the local industry is feeling the pinch of quote be nice to you but it is now time to restructure the way forward to the future. their hope now is that domestic tourism can help compensate the losses until international travel resumes it is going to be a very tough people to hit. but what good has come out of the 19 is that every just a nation has come back to 0 we're all starting from ground 0 so this means that there is an opportunity for decisions about how to correct it. but economists say domestic tourism is a dead end given disposable income. needs to redesign packages currently geared towards international. what to do
12:19 am
in my view is to put a stimulus package in the tourism sector. which could be tax related they should forget about this sector take money from it when it's in the. in the graveyard head to be buried so they need to risk. their tourism industry here this is a tough period but there is a hope that brighter days lie ahead victoria force is ready to shore of its splendor. but this month marks 75 years since it tomic bombing of the japanese cities of hiroshima and nagasaki the infamous mushroom cloud for. filmed by u.s. scientists who were company at the missions the day w. investigation has revealed that an early mixup of the footage has led to the wrong images being used for decades in t.v.
12:20 am
reports and documentary films around the world t w s e free thoughts. these t.v. reports supposedly show the us atomic bombing of hiroshima japan 1st atomic bomb. are going to drop out of me. but none of these are the bomb they called little boy a d w investigation has revealed that media companies around the world used the wrong footage for decades to portray this historic moment until recently we also made that mistake. let's go back to that mission in 1945 harold agnew a physicist who observed both the hiroshima and nagasaki missions aboard an escort plane brought his personal camera with him and the hoover institution in california where his 16 millimeter film reels are held believes they are the only film recordings of both mushroom clouds. agnew's footage of hiroshima is rarely
12:21 am
used in t.v. reports and documentaries. his shots of the 2nd bomb dropped on nagasaki are often used instead. the earliest misuse d.w. was able to find a short film produced by the us government the associated press gives the date of publication as 1945. and that is that the bomb was immensely more powerful than any irrational weapon exactly to turn a ball and it had far more destructive power we need the mushroom cloud is. substantial it is bigger. you can tell from comparing that to the 2 bombs and the photography a small slice it more convincing as you as your next demonstrate with the 1st but
12:22 am
this shot it's neither hiroshima nor nagasaki a search of atomic history archives suggest that this massive blast is the cherokee hydrogen bomb test over bikini atoll in 1956. did the government and the media make a simple error or was the misuse of the footage intentional. i can't really speculate about whether they were they were deliberately concocting. a misrepresentation that if i was told that was the case it certainly wouldn't surprise me because there were that the american government has been determined to validate using this weapon somewhat desperately at times ever since the end of the war when d.w. contacted the hiroshima peace memorial museum they told us we sincerely hope that every interested party could join us in conveying the destruction in an accurate
12:23 am
way. 75 years on if you remain who witnessed the devastation of hiroshima and nagasaki to tell the story to future generations it's important to many in japan that the facts and the images are correct. report produced by i mean i see joins me now welcome i mean so what made you suspect the wrong image was being used i was doing research for port in the archives that we have access to d w and i was looking for images of hiroshima and when i found them i could not say beyond a shadow of a doubt that i was looking at hiroshima i wanted to make sure i wasn't using a saki there was some things that tipped me off like the ambient clouds the kind of what the weather looked like that day and the time of day that it looked like the sun and things like this and these are actually tools that i use in the capacity of a digital reporter so when i do analyses of social media when i look for videos on
12:24 am
twitter facebook and so on and try to verify them and try to make sure that the videos are what they say they are and what i found interesting here is i was using the same tools the same protocol that we used to verify twitter and facebook videos for some of the most iconic images of the 20th century and it does seem strange that the only images that we have of the hiroshima explosion come from a private camera why was there no official u.s. government recording of this is talking that well there was an official camera operator who went on the plane but when he went to develop his photos his images later it just didn't work and one of the theories is because he tried to develop them on tinian island which is where the planes took off from it was too humid so that's the official account why he lost his footage harold agnew whose footage we still do have who brought his private camera on a plane just thinking ahead thinking that maybe he wanted to film it himself he actually sent his photos to be developed in the us in the contiguous states and it
12:25 am
worked and so we have that record of both of the missions that he flew on as a scientific observer and what i think is interesting here it relates to what i said about social media in that this was the dawn of an era of private. commercial cameras that people could take with them places and so it's really the 1st few years that we had historical. events documented by private citizens and i think that plays a role in why there was a mix up here and so this mix up has been widespread and is just going on for decades right i think it's hard to trace this all back to one source i haven't been able to put my finger on on one moment say this is where the mix of happened but there was a video produced by the u.s. government in 1905 that seems to be dramatize a little bit another had it looks like scenes that were not historical scenes that were filmed with a professional film camera of planes that are not the end all again so
12:26 am
a lot of this film seems to be made up after the fact just to show people what it might have been like to be part of that mission and this got saved in the national archives with footage of nagasaki saying that it was here shima and the national archives labels it as hiroshima and a lot of archives nowadays are drawing on that source instead of the original source material and i think that was the reason for the end of the day a mushroom cloud is a mushroom cloud we know it happened why does it matter that this is the wrong but of well i think that's true in the sense that there are more important facts about hiroshima and nagasaki that we we should try to get to the bottom of the death count for example but if you think about the devastation of these cities and if you imagine that this was your city if your city had been completely destroyed by a bomb a lot of people you know had died and that the media when they reported on this got that wrong they reported images of another city not once not twice but for
12:27 am
75 years then i think this does a dishonor to the victims of that many of whom the survivors nowadays many of whom have passed away and it's up to us now to preserve the record of everything of the images and the facts of those 2 days thank you that i'm in a safe. well there is nearly done but the conversation continues on the body and you can join us on twitter at stayed up and use what you can follow me out don't forget to use the net the hashtag that that was up to him of the test.
