i see a sure. but how would the world sound without the biggest composer of all time i can't you can begin to imagine. a world class horn player center willis on a musical journey of discovery. world without beethoven starts to temper 16th on the w. . and israeli el al plane bearing the word peace in english out of a can hebrew touchdown in abu dhabi today the 1st ever passenger flight between israel and the united arab emirates the u.a.e. broke ranks with its gulf arab neighbors this month by normalizing diplomatic relations with israel the palestinians describe the deal as a step in the back but will other arab countries now follow i'm phil gayle in
10:31 pm
berlin and this is the day. we just completed a truly historic flight. the message that we carry for the palestinians is also one of hope you will not have it is very painful for us today when an israeli plane lands in the emirates we put an offer to their leadership on the table that will enable them to have a state and self-determination no how you see the position of some arab states who are against normalization with israel. we can't want peace more than they want peace it can't be stuck in the past they have to they have to come to the table. also on the day lebanon's president has asked a career diplomat to become the country's next prime minister but some on the

streets of beirut think the new man is part of the problem. i'm here to say thank god you are safe and we are here for you and i am one of you and hopefully we will work together and form a government as soon as possible. we don't need you we have the revolution we are the revolution. the 1st of a commercial passenger flight from israel to the united arab emirates has landed in abu dhabi from tel aviv on board a top israeli and u.s. officials including president trump senior advisor and sudden jarrett caution by starting flight comes 3 weeks after its rather u.a.e. established diplomatic ties and a u.s. brokered deal to many residents of both countries to agreement to means they can finally bring their business and personal relationships into the open. down of them were these are unusual days for mark a jewish israeli palestinian businessman from his small office in jerusalem and
10:33 pm
through travel he has been doing business with the united arab emirates for several years but always under the radar the country's had no diplomatic relations until recently as a 1st step phone lines were officially established but right now my friends are just call me for the fun of it hey man i wired the call it got i just heard the news that we could call it sort of directly communication. is something we humans are known for civilization requires communication and work together. i really praise that wonderful great vision of this country united arab emirates. who facilitates the certification of helen crucial products between. its where its owners on coal to the emirates for years people had to use foreign providers or the internet to connect and to leverage.
10:34 pm
great just imagine the deal breaks with the long held view among arab countries that normalizing ties would only come after israel and its military occupation of the palestinian territories in israel there have been a lot of firsts in the past days 1st direct interviews with and morality officials like here a t.v. channel 13 is tell of the reporters were sent immediately to darby and israeli new sites very reportedly until in the emirates you know what is amazing normally in those cases it takes time but now everything is on the table relationship embassies flight stories and everything is moving very fast we can so on the emirates we can go there we can every interview is there only egypt and jordan have signed peace treaties with israel in the past. hopes that this new agreement will go beyond
10:35 pm
business and security matter this i suspect that this will be a war more peace than the relationship with jordan there was never about blood there was never wars there was never any misunderstanding or political disagreement direct between us and the united arab emirates or anybody in the gulf for that reason so i'm really optimistic view arab countries have signaled that they might consider following the u.n. this move it could affect if the map often line says the region. so how big a deal is their state. is professor of middle east studies and international affairs at johns hopkins university joins us from washington d.c. welcome to day to. start with the point that we heard at the end of that report how likely do you think. countries are to follow seems.
10:36 pm
not immediately at least not in the way that the trump administration would like for them to be in washington in september for a signing ceremony and the reason is that other countries don't necessarily have. already the relationships that you he had with israel they don't have necessarily the incentives that u.a.e. has for signing the deal at this point in time and also most of them have much larger populations that they have to listen to the u.a.e. has a very small indigenous population and it can contain any kind of adverse reaction that the population may have had the leaderships move at this point in time very successfully other countries don't have that calculation but but nevertheless i do think it creates momentum for additional countries to come forward over talk ok so you could it was just as a question has to be asked what's in it for them what you know what shifted abu
10:37 pm
dhabi from the long held out of positions the relations with israel to be no lies once israel ends its occupation of the palestinian territories i don't think this was ever set in the manner in which now the administration is putting. a new way had pretty much normalized relations with israel over several years there were meeting of intelligence officials military officials there was business relationships it's just that he was not completely out out in the open. this towards israel because it has an admiration i'm sorry the line for moving towards israel because. because 1st of all they have what is about iran they have worries about turkey you know he's a very small country is looking for israeli support against iran and against turkey u.a.e. as sees itself as a modernizing developing country that sees israel as
10:38 pm
a mark and not just as a result it has been building these relations with israel the reason why you can make that recognition right now at this point in time i think has a large measure to do with coming in american elections the trump administrations put a lot of pressure for this to happen now so president trump can claim a victory and also u.a.e. has been very close to trump and would like to basically have something to show that the democrats if they come back into power does that it is on the right side and it has built relations with israel and protect itself in what might be adverse reaction in congress if the trump administration were to lose the election ok so the palestinians have talked about this deal in terms of being a stop in the bath and the betrayal where does this leave them because they must be wondering well who else is next. well you know the palestinians have not been at the center of middle east politics for some time you know the region has been
10:39 pm
focused on civil wars in iraq in syria in libya on i says you not palestinians have for a while been an afterthought and in fact the region did not react when the u.s. embassy was moved from tel aviv to jerusalem they have not reacted to news of an extension they did not react to news of the united states recognizing an extension of the go on hikes and so in a way. this is already been happening for a while and it just shows that the palestinians or the palestinian issue has lost its hold on arab politics and that arabs are making strategic decisions based on larger issues like their confrontation with iran and turkey like the balance of power in the region and as a result this is this is really reflects the shifting reality in the region and supposedly the just look at the u.s. and if this did you do you think that the president trump is going to get
10:40 pm
a lot of credit for this still and called press. not in congress. he definitely would like to claim some kind of diplomatic success he doesn't have much to show for. it was unable to bring iran to the table for negotiations he doesn't have it deal with north korea so this is something that he wants to show that he's successful with but what is really is particularly very popular with evangelical voters within the republican party and that obviously will it will play day well with them and also he's hoping that he will impact the jewish vote as well and so it's not so much in terms of. you know how much coverage he's going to get on a daily basis in the u.s. that's not likely to happen but that is that at least he will have some kind of it important foreign policy 32 counts during the election anderson thank you for that
10:41 pm
professor professor massa from johns hopkins university. i i was only today to meet the president of the republic michel who informed me of the decision of the legislators in the binding consultations to designate me to form the new lebanese government. i thanked him and the legislators for their confidence we prayed to god to enable us to form a new government as soon as possible it will be asked i am. lost mr. having got the job lebanon's prime minister designate that went out onto the streets of the capital beirut to talk to the people and get an idea of the scale of the job facing. the she'd be able to say nothing can xpress words fail to describe this horrific scene but. i hope we can join hands as soon as possible to rebuild what has been destroyed by this explosion someone has
10:42 pm
a job we will try as soon as the government is formed to speed up the investigation and to have the investigations result made public as soon as possible after a bad move in. the last way they must do more to help people people want to go home many have moved in with their families it's hard we were already suffering economic hardship this is. this will be our 1st priority i'm here to say thank god you are safe and we are here for you and i am one of you and hopefully we will work together and form a government as soon as possible in order to start working immediately then i didn't believe we should follow the church. we don't need you we have the revolution we are the revolution. began. it's well let's look at the scale of the job facing the stuff at the. deeds from the arabic is with me now welcome
10:43 pm
to the studio i'm our prime minister of lebanon sounds like. a job that can only end in failure not only does he have to make sure the various clans and religious and sectarian affiliations feel like they're getting what they're entitled to but he also has to bear in mind the desires of the bigger regional powers like iran and saudi arabia. if the regional powers hadn't approved him he wouldn't got to the to where he is today there was definitely some sort of agreement among the regional powers through their through their tools and political parties in lebanon that allowed for naming stuff i deem as the prime minister designate even though we haven't heard any reactions from regional powers like saudi arabia or iran. or we've heard from there from the political parties backed by either saudi arabia or iran in lebanon who named a db and made him the prime minister designate today he has to definitely to go
10:44 pm
through a lot of a lot of dirty water in his new mission and some say some analysts say it's a suicide mission that he's that he's taken what can he change he said it himself that it's a short chance for levanon it's a small chance he will either make it or not the question is what will he do and how will he managed it well let's let's let's just stop all that question and talk about the issue of change we'll listen 1st to the lebanese president michel i would say in the country's entire political structure needs reforming to turn it into a secular state he's part of his speech from some. time to think of a new way of co-existing or a new consensus lebanon's youth are calling for change. their voices are everywhere calling for a change to the system so should we listen to them. these young people are the future of lebanon so for their sake and the sake of their future i say yes the time
10:45 pm
has come. now. at the outset this looks like you should be a great job because the political elite wants change the people want change but we know that the people within the political establishment the clans and and the religious sects is a majority are they really going to allow much change which is likely to diminish their power by choosing someone from that exact establishment it's highly doubtful that any real change will come oh it's. relations are very powerful within the system he might be he might look right now as someone who has never heard of but he has been an advisor to to one of the previous prime ministers of lebanon as you've mccarty's been his political advisor has been
10:46 pm
a number so there are 2 germany since 2013 and we all know the power and importance of germany as european countries in international politics but also it has good relations with the french his wife is french herself and he's on good terms with french diplomats so given all that context he is parts of that establishment how could someone from inside that establishment can bring any change that could jeopardize the existence of such a power sharing formula a wow so that did this sounds like you're saying that nothing's really going to change it's highly doubtful that anything will drastically change there are calls for reforms and that's what the various lebanese components agreed upon and also based on the upon the quest of many donors and supporters specifically european donors to lebanon such as france and we've all seen the arrival of money on mccrone just this evening to be do it and his main. so it was let's do it let's change
10:47 pm
let's have some reforms the government should have a clear mission he didn't specify what that clear mission is but reforms and changes on the top priority let's guess at it because what you have in lebanon is a country that was in economic meltdown before the pandemic aids and now the new prime minister has to deal with the disasters of the economy on the pandemic and the aftermath of this beirut airport explosion so why should he starts a report came out today by coincidence probably by the world bank assessing giving a 1st assessment of the major losses and money needed to rebuild beirut the number the estimate the number has ranged between $8000000000.00 and $10000000000.00 and this report issued by the world bank was also done in accordance or and collaboration with the if united nations and the european union this huge amount of money is needed to reform beirut and this way for income or this money in order to
10:48 pm
rebuild with comes with a clear agenda of freeform and the country a country that has been already dealing with economy crises and up endemic where will that money come from very brief and very briefly where where will that money come from and upon which agenda will this money be dealt with ok m l m l d i'm from did a bit arabic thank you so much thank you so much for having me. chance of i'm going to battle has condemned a shameful an attempt by the far right to storm the german parliament here to that in the extreme east broke through police lines during a larger value against the government's pandemic policies chance of nat'l says those who try to access the bill to abuse the right to demonstrate peacefully a condemnation has been echoed by leaders from across the political spectrum. it looks like a normal monday in central berlin the tourists are back the vice tigers open for
10:49 pm
visitors again but the scenes of unrest at the weekend are on many people's minds. saturday evening far right extremists pushed through police lines to the top of the high stuck steps. just pictures that my generation just isn't familiar with. these people stand for different values and to see that also here in germany there are so many people who think differently and have different values that pains me. to. stand the demonstrators shouted resistance. and veers into us folk we are the people. the black white and red of the colors of the old imperial german right used now by neo nazis in front of that i stuck it makes for shocking symbolism. other demonstrators who filled berlin at the weekend and consisted largely of
10:50 pm
peaceful coronavirus skeptics were no longer the center of attention. 6 policemen and women were invited to the official residence of the german president frank photo steinmeyer thanked them and their colleagues for their composed reaction at the weekend and had a message to the demonstrators. my 1st dent in that of a dog my empathy ends where demonstrators let themselves be instrumentalist by enemies of democracy and by political agitators. they're after us and in short if you close ranks with right wing extremists in the streets or even if you just walk side by side with new nazis xenophobes and anti semites if you don't distance yourself clearly and proactively you're on their side. an accusation that corona skeptics have rejected in a heated discussion with journalists they insisted the far right where
10:51 pm
a fringe group and that the organizers had indeed distanced themselves. according to polls the vast majority of germans support the government's anti corona measures . but it's also the message anglo-american spokesman had. mostly i don't want to thank the vast majority of the 83000000 people in this country all those who behave in a reasonable prudent and respectful manner and adhere to the rules in this pandemic even if that's not always easy. the corona skeptics are making plans for their next demonstration observers will be watching to see whether they succeed in distancing themselves from far right groups more clearly. datable reporter joel dole roy you can tell us more welcome joel so least started
10:52 pm
of course with a demonstration against coronavirus restrictions that did seem to be a lot of people there is this resistance to the government's coronavirus measures widespread then well the numbers are quite impressive $38000.00 people were estimated to be at saturday's demonstration that's almost twice as many as were estimated to be at the last demonstration resort about a month ago so there does seem to be this growing number however they still are in the minority in germany the latest opinion polls show about 90 percent of germans are actually against these coronavirus skeptic demonstrations and are supportive of the government's measures to control coronavirus and those measures are actually quite lenient when you consider what's going on in other countries here in germany schools are back in session public life is generally resumed and you can go out in the restaurants of full i actually had some guests visiting here on the weekend who came here from spain because they said they wanted to enjoy a bit more of nightlife and so forth and i don't think we should be encouraging that but that's what's going on so the measures here are quite large in comparison
10:53 pm
there isn't that much to complain about the majority of germans are supportive of what the government is doing to control the coronavirus measures so these demonstrations although they're quite vocal they are still in the minority is interesting when you look around the world pandemic control measures have become politically charged nowhere more so of course in the united states i mean the case here in germany is that a particular party leading what you might call the anti masking charge well what people were so upset about on the weekend when that group stormed the steps of the reichstag and waved those flags was that seemed to be an affront an attack on germany germany system of democracy which of course if you want to have your voice heard inside the parliament is supposed to get elected to go in there and raise your points now this movement has not yet got that kind of democratic legitimacy there is one party that is trying to position itself close to these with demonstrations and that is the alternative for germany. deep now the leaders of that party actually called for people to take part in these demonstrations the
10:54 pm
flags of the party have been seen waving on the streets as part of these protests but it hasn't really translated to electoral success for the f.t. as of yet their polling numbers have not about start as a result of that movement in fact they've dipped down slightly since the last election and it's angela merkel's christian democrats party that has actually gone ahead in the polls another sign that while this movement is loud it is vocal it can mobilize people it has not yet gotten any kind of legitimate to democratic support and the startling pictures that we saw a of these people trying to break into the reichstag being held back by by police at one stage as they they reach the doors of the building just to look like just street police officers one of whom didn't even have a hell which is how is that police operation being viewed as a success since nobody actually did bunny's to break in or a fadia well the individual police officer involved are getting a lot of praise we remember those scenes that you saw you talking about that one police officer who took off his helmet and yelled at the crowd to get back down off
10:55 pm
the streets they're really being held up as heroes they were invited to meet the president of germany today and some politicians have suggested that they should be bestowed these civil medal of honor in recognition of their services however the police service police force in general and that response has been heavily criticized the way that they mobilized against this demonstration it seemed to be rather disorganized former police officers who led demonstrations in berlin has come out saying that they've never seen such a disorganized response to a demonstration for example at one point they tried to block the street marches which forced people to come closer together which is the opposite of what they were trying to achieve in terms of of social distancing and one thing of the other really stands out is the policing numbers it's a sign that the police force seem to not take this demonstration very seriously and underestimated the potential for far right. members to be infiltrating the what was going on there's a lot of focus on left wing extremism in the german police force i'll give you an
10:56 pm
example the last major lessing demonstration in bowen was the 1st of may demonstration which was around 5000 people to pot and that had 2000 officers on the street on saturday we had certain 8000 protesters and only 3000 police are a few in number so it shows that there's a fall they're taking a fall or seriously didn't hold a job thanks. i'm not whilst the day of the conversation continues i'm part. of the. move.

11:05 pm
we saw from saturday evening carry a lot of weight that i starved is historically and emotionally significant to many people both in here in germany and aboard and that's some of the sentiment that we were hearing in that report just now as well but what it is is actually a symbolic remind all of the threats all of the far right extremists seen in germany right now it is real and it is present and we're seeing how they are becoming more present in the public sphere as well something that just a few years ago was very much still a subaru here in germany but now we're seeing how there are known cases of far right extremism and in institutions in germany we've had a feeling there flugel a part of a democratically elected party the alternative for germany party is now under surveillance and on top of that so we've also seen how people are willing at the weekend as well to walk alongside these people many people telling me when i was
11:06 pm
there reporting on saturday that well everyone is able to have their opinion here in germany but of course as we heard from front to steinmeyer the german president that doesn't quite cut it when it comes to foreign extremism but it is at work pointed out that not all of these demonstrations demonstrators attending these protests are far right extremist what we're seeing is a really bizarre to be honest mixed bag of people from coronavirus skeptics who feel that their rights are being infringed by corona virus protection measures you have empty boxes conspiracy theories but also a significant number of far right extremists and what does that what consequence is that there will be arrests made charges brought. a consequence is for the people who planned the police operation. that certainly is going to be a big debate now and there's already a debate on going here in germany about what the future security of the bundestag
11:07 pm
of the christ are building the pollen the building will look like but we're already seeing in a way the effects over the weekend as well the the courts here in berlin have already called off a planned long term counter protest by the same people who organize these coronavirus. skeptic protests that we had that's already been banned that was going to be a 2 week long camping protest between the brandenburg gate in the victory column here in the capital because of the old forces just didn't see that they was going to be possible for processes to to maintain those coronavirus protection measures so certainly as i feel it's going to be a clamp down on these protests going forward especially when it comes to ensuring the public safety of people here in germany but as your correspondent kate brady thank you. alice have

possible to make peace in exchange for peace. the 1st ever commercial flight from tel aviv to abu dabi comes after the united arab emirates as the 1st gulf country and only the 3rd arab nation normalized its relations with israel in the flight as part of a new pact brokered by the u.s. over the last years people have spoken about all of the bad things that have happened in the middle east and all the conflict in the chaos and the division that's existed over the last decades but i do believe that this is our suring in a new hope from this month's all people that he says possible and that there's a new chapter that could be read it. in another historic breakthrough the israeli plane also received permission to cross saudi arabian airspace this is the 1st public sign of saudi cooperation with israel after years of behind the scenes dealings and it goes against the longstanding palestinian position that relations
