venice film festival gets underway but it might not be quite as you remember it our film critic is at the scene to tell us to lose food behind the mask. i'm married to evanston it's good to have you with us a series of twists and turns in the u.s. in the run up to the november presidential election and another in a long line of tell all books from former white house insiders has been leaked this one from president trump's former personal attorney michael cohen now cohen was known as trump's fixer and is now serving a 3 year sentence for campaign finance violations and lying to congress one line from his book and time. disloyal says that trump is guilty of the same
11:02 am
crimes that landed cohen in prison. we'll talk about this i'm joined by reporter joel dolerite who's in the studio with me hello to you joel ok so can you tell us what exactly is cohen alleging in this new book cohen is referring to payments made to silence 2 women who claim they had affairs with the president one of them being the porn actress stormy daniels now in his book cohen gives detailed descriptions of negotiations to pay the women now prosecutors say that those payments were essentially campaign contributions to donald trump's election campaigns that were undeclared and were there for a crime cohen says that trump all through as the payments and therefore if he was guilty trump should be to now trump has denied both your fares and making the payments and the white house has called cohen a liar and
11:03 am
a convicted criminal which is factual cohen is now serving out that 3 year sentence from home detention all right but is there anything else in the bull anything new or surprising that could potentially damage traveling these things we've heard about before haven't we we have heard much of it before but this time it's coming from a person who was close to the president his personal lawyer right up until 2018 and he says he's even still loyal to the man now cohen says that trump is a chief ally of fraud a bully a racist a predator and a con man more specifically he says that trump disparaged religious leaders who prayed over him saying can you believe that anyone believes that b.s. he also alleges that trump made racist comments about hispanic and black voters saying that they were too stupid to vote for trump and he said all countries wrong by black people were s. holes specifically referring to notes and mandela south africa the full book comes out on tuesday ok i know you're. the reading and joel interestingly so the leaked
11:04 am
the leak details from this book follow a report in the atlantic magazine that also came out the other day that alleges trump made disparaging comments about american military dead now according to that report trump refused to visit a military hostile military cemetery rather in france because it was quote filled with losers that now not surprisingly trump denies the story here's what he said you know it was a fake story written by a magazine that was probably not going to be around much longer but it was a totally fake story and that was confirmed by many people who were actually there it was a terrible thing that somebody could say the kind of things and especially to me because i work for the military than almost anybody else all right so we just heard it trump denies the original story but joel parts of it are actually being
11:05 am
corroborated by different media outlets i'm right so it 1st came out in the atlantic magazine but since then a.p. c.n.n. and most interesting fox news of all the cold corroborated parts of it of course fox news is usually quite loyal to the president now in response trump has called for the fox news reporter to be fired ok well understandably these allegations of these statements by trump have has angered many veterans and also not surprising that the democratic presidential nominee joe biden has also jumped on this story let's listen to what he had to say. trump has demonstrated he has no sense of service. no moral to do any cause other than himself 5 the honor be. the next commander in chief i will ensure that our american heroes. no i have their backs honor their
11:06 am
sacrifice and those who've been injured will be in military parades all right joe biden speaking out there now joel there are only 2 more months left until the presidential election how do all of these things play out how will they affect the how military voters are going to go to the polls well 4 years ago trump went into the last election with a commanding lead in that particular demographic military voters he had a 20 percent lead over his opponent well now joe biden has a 4 percent lead in that demographic it's not much but it's still a huge turnaround from the last time however it is still quite a long time until the election on november 3 in political terms at least but we'll have to see how these new allegations and michael cohen's new book affect voters and their responses. all right thank you so very much for following the story for us. all right let's turn our attention now to some of the other stories making news

11:09 am
. and even hollywood actors are expected to follow the rules. also following the rules with his mask is do roxboro from d.w. culture of who is in venice scott i am very envious that you get to go now the festival is in full swing tell us what are the highlights so far. yeah no it's actually delightful here in venice and if i had to pick out some of the highlights the sort of big way festival i'd have to pick out vanessa kirby the british actress who maybe people know from netflix the series the crown where she plays princess margaret she has 2 films here 2 very different movies in pieces of a woman she plays a mother who's traumatized by the death of her child and it comes she plays a pioneer wife in 1900. 80 neighboring woman very very different but she's astounding in both of them very very different performances
11:10 am
than i've ever seen from kirby and i think that of a necessary will definitely be at the top of the the list when it comes to the ending of the awards next week but if i have to pick my absolute highlight so far the film festival it's outside the venice competition there's a film apples a greek movie and it's set it's sort of a fairy tale it's set in a analog world so no cell phones no digital devices but something's happening people are losing their memory there's a wave of amnesia and it's basically the film is an allegory for what's happening to us where we're sort of uploading our memories into apple like digital devices a very very charming film and shows sort of the magic of cinema really by highlight so far at the vet is told us. well of course after months of the coronavirus lockdown scott the film industry is hoping for a sort of restart with this festival and also the city of venice itself now the city needs tourism but many locals hope it can resume in a new way let's have
11:11 am
a look at this report and scott i'll be talking to you again in a moment. it's only a stone's throw from venice is famous st mark's square to the arsenal quarter where many born and bred venetians live. like ariana and her husband even on the run their own small pasta factory it's a traditional business bridge. resisting being displaced by mass tourism. business is fragile it's a delicate fine city and it doesn't need a certain kind of tourism if all you want to do in venice is take a walk then go to las vegas and visit the fake friends they're not here. at the front of the store marianna wants to buy pasta quickly he has to repair electrical appliances but he couldn't make ends meet or get interested i had to change jobs because the local population was decreasing and i didn't have enough work to live off in short i became a gondolier so. many people asked what kind of tourism really benefits venice
11:12 am
during the height of the pandemic in italy the city was shut down for 10 weeks it's still unusually empty the guggenheim museum now opens only 4 days a week the majority of visitors are italians the director recognizes the power of art particularly in a time of crisis. we must also think that about protecting it for us but also for future generations so if there is an opportunity and we have to see whether this opportunity will be will be taken and understood by the right people and the younger generations look we'll say corona could represent an opportunity to reimagine venice. yes without mass tourism we aren't slammed all the time we can be more cultivated ourselves this city deserves that. this
11:13 am
is a moment for objectivity a new chance to rethink our city and protect it gentler of them welcoming to tourists but in moderation a potential path forward as venice looks towards a post corona future. so scart fewer people this year in venice at the festival and lots of rules obviously the masks give us a sense of the feeling the atmosphere in the city under these circumstances yes i have to say probably at least it's been delightful i was just couldn't see it mark's square yesterday and i have the place almost all to myself it's so different i come here. all these other. folks it's the 1st time in my memory that you can really experience dennis as it used to be and i think it's
11:14 am
a like well i mean obviously the city survives on tourism and it needs the tourists to come back but i really hope that they do find a different way post pandemic a different way of doing a tourism so that you can really enjoy the delights of the city without having to. all right we seem to be having some difficulties with the audio from venice that was scott ross perot's speaking to us from the venice film festival. all right to austria now where an extreme athlete has managed to keep his cool and sense a new world record for standing in a box of ice just the covert was submerged in more than 200 kilograms of ice cubes for just over 2 and a half hours he broke the world previous record which he set himself last year when he emerged from his custom made ice box cobras said he was happy to feel the warmth
