a german backlash against the project would hurt them to perform for an hour or so but it would be wrong to assume that what's happened will not have any consequences after this point. must go denies the allegations of an avowal nature and to hit back with its own assertions the kremlin says germany has not responded to russian requests for legal assistance but in rejects this meanwhile ukraine has joined calls for tough sanctions to be imposed on russia be all from us money in the lean we. will react with tough measures that the month so that putin is left in no doubt country. and many german politicians agree. understands only 2 things money and gas stream $2.00 is crucial to our future relations with russia. the green party believes russian gas is incompatible with

clean energy. it. government must find ways to exit this project all states can't even if accepting ends up costing money and it is time. it all adds up to an uncertain future for a controversial pipeline. of more oil it's bring in our chief political editor mikhail kushner here in berlin and our correspondent in moscow emily sherwin good morning to you both mchale at the u.s. has been pressuring germany to scrap north stream 2 for a long time could we're lin's dispute with moscow over that novelli poisoning end up killing the pipeline. it could in the end but at the moment it very much so that the german government is not speaking with one voice necessarily we heard the foreign minister saying that one shouldn't rule out that this would have an effect on the north stream to pipeline than the violin the attempted murder at the same

time we have tons that ungrammatical wanting to see this decouple despite the fact that she called this attempted murder on him a direct attack on the fundamental rights and values we stand for those were the very strong very unusually strong words she used and the big question now is whether it will in the end have an impact despite the chancellor refusing to really raise the issue with vladimir putin and one must bear in mind that it's not just the americans it was deeply unpopular project throughout the you with very few exceptions from the word go. emily you're in moscow what can we make of the russian government's response to the bell these poisoning is moscow showing any interest in a transparent investigation. well judging from the words that we've been hearing from the russian side they are very interested in an open investigation that's at least what they're saying they've been talking about the
8:05 am
fact that they sent a request from the general prosecutor's office here in russia to germany asking for information about not viney on friday we heard from doctors here saying that they would be open to work with german doctors on the case to find out what's really behind this sort of showing that they are very open for dialogue but in fact we've heard various different versions of what may have happened in the past few days and weeks and there hasn't been an investigation that has been opened despite calls from these team from the word go to open an investigation we haven't actually seen that happen and i think that's a strategy that we've seen a lot in the past from russia including on things like the crash of the mh 17 plane a few years ago kind of different versions of what may have happened questioning the veracity of the other side and kind of creating almost

a smokescreen of war and so we'll have to see going forward whether the russian side is really open to open and open to opening an investigation rather. to both those tensions between the e.u. and the west in general and russia but 1st let me tell you a tell you about this pipeline project again germany's green party opposes north stream 2 on environmental grounds do they have a voyage alternative to meet germany's energy needs. well we're deep into geopolitical territory it's not just the environment without wanting to belittle the issue for now germany doesn't have an alternative it's an open secret that even ukraine through which a pipeline runs from to europe is receiving gas through that pipeline and that's also planned in the future but the big overarching question is whether there's no alternative whether this is i tend the tea for that was the word that the german
8:07 am
chancellor is used so many times in the past the american argument is hey by our liquid nitrogen gas build more terminals in europe which would create greater dependency on the united states but there's no easy one stop solution or alternative to north stream 2 the big question is what is the biggest party right now getting distance between the e.u. european values and russia or energy security in the future ok north stream 2 pipelines clearly caught up in the tensions between the west and russia russia is already at all with the west or is actions in ukraine and its position on bella reuss among other things could we see relations emily deteriorate even further between over the only case. well i think the words that we're hearing from the german side from the e.u. really are serious and russia probably knows that the fact that the threat of north
8:08 am
stream to kind of being cancelled is hanging in the air that is also very serious i think for the russian side but so far the german position has been to keep dialogue open with russia and that hasn't changed despite the kind of poisoning of sergei scrip olive few years ago a russian spy despite accusations of hacking at the top the german bundestag despite the murder of a citizen in the tear garden in berlin so despite really serious things happening german russians relations have remained especially on the economic front a very important for both sides and it's hard to know whether that really can change over this we'll have to wait and see. only correspondent thank you so much emily sure wonder and here in berlin our chief political editor became a coastal thank you very much to both. well let's have
