condition is now improving after he was possibly poisoned with the soviet era nerve agent noby check the case is being treated as an assassination attempt on a volley who is one of president vladimir putin's harshest critics western leaders are calling on moscow to cooperate with an international investigation the kremlin denies any involvement. and chief political editor michel are following the latest for us hi michelle tell us more about what the hospital has said here well the hospital issued a statement saying that he was responding that he was no longer in the medically induced coma and that doctors were successively trying to wean him off a breathing assistance which he has been on for some 2 weeks now so this is a 1st a positive sign at the same time there are still big question marks and it's simply a question that can't be answered right now how significant the long term effects will be and whether he will in fact be able to once again become fully healthy

again so these are early positive signs but we're still waiting for details and doctors are waiting to see whether this is actually a recovery that. this has led to a serious diplomatic escalation between germany and russia where do things stand in the investigation into what happened. well at the moment there's a bit of a standoff between berlin and moscow with moscow saying that germany wasn't volunteering information and germany insisting that russia is not doing its part in not showing any clear signals that it wants to find out the truth behind what actually happened to alex in of on the if you speak to politicians here either on camera or off camera many will tell you that they simply lack the imagination for this not to be tense somewhat with the russian government because this after all

nobody talk is in the agents that was produced in the former soviet union and that is difficult to produce and even more difficult to store and transport safely so this is seen pretty much as a fact that russia at some level had something to do with this and this raises big question marks about a big project the north stream to direct pipeline that is currently being built and we've seen a significant shift there but even german chancellor angela merkel who wanted to decouple the issue from than of on the case is now following the lead of her own foreign minister who said nothing should be ruled out so that could yet be an impact on that particular project but it's still early days to assess the diplomatic damage our chief political correspondent know with the latest developments there for us thank you now reports from ballerinas say a prominent opposition leader has been abducted by masked men in the capital minsk

the website t u t dr b y says maria called a sneak over was pushed into a minivan by men in black clothing and driven away now here she is at a massive rally that was held on sunday more than 600 people were arrested at that demonstration protesters have turned out for the past 4 weeks calling a long time authoritarian leader of extended look i shan't go to step down after contested election. andy of usenet connelly is following this story for us in minsk and he sent us an update well this seems to be a continuation of the government stress g.o.p. attempt to deny ability not using police in uniform to do these kind of things sending out security agents in plainclothes sometimes wearing balaclavas sometimes on the backs on to do their dirty work as it were yesterday we saw that happening with detentions at the end of the demonstration i was just standing on the street and suddenly students were running past running for cover and cafes and shopping centers sometimes these people in plain clothes following them as a classic of

a well we understand she was in the downtown him mintz on her way to the post office because some legal documents as part of some court cases again when suddenly that unmarked van stopped and pulled her in plastic of his team hasn't been able to reach a curfew as they do believe this is a situation interesting enough police here interior ministry denying any official detention so for now they're not willing to own up to this arrest medically sicko's one of 3 women who really set the election campaign on fire earlier this summer the other being said logical also who ventured was the presidential candidate was then forced to flee and if you ania and there's also a 3rd woman but i think it's that caller who himself is now in poland somebody because he was the only one basically who hasn't taken the hints from the government he had to leave the country he was basically forced them to detain and now by refusing to be edged out of her own country as so many other opposition figures have she has also been involved in the founding of a new party but i think that early early early days of that kind of thing now at

hundreds of people trapped at a remote campsite were airlifted to safety a heat wave is pushing temperatures up to a record levels 8 people have been killed. in wiki leaks founder julian assange has resumed his london court battle to avoid extradition to the u.s. now the u.s. government wants to bring a songe to trial over wiki leaks publication of secret u.s. military documents a decade ago the extradition hearings hinge on whether a son's actions are considered journalism. you commission president was a funnel and has warned the u.k. to respect its withdrawal agreement with the block or risk any future trade partnership her tweet comes after british prime minister boris johnson set an october 15th deadline for a deal or he would pull the u.k. out of negotiations and reports also say his government is preparing legislation that would override parts of the withdrawal deal that was agreed upon last year that would mean a dramatic reversal after years of dialogue. it's not 12 months since british prime

minister boris johnson on likely deal from the jaws of defeat after a long negotiations with the european union. i do think that this deal represents a very good deal both for the e.u. and for the u.k. in interviews heat praise on his hard work what you have is a fantastic deal for all of the u.k. at heart the deal would prevent an internal border in ireland now his government has found fault with the details and is reportedly planning to tear up parts of it a move that could see borders return jeopardizing peace in the region ireland's foreign minister said unilaterally reneging on a treaty would be a very unwise way to proceed coming at the start of a crunch week for trade talks the e.u.'s chief negotiator told french radio he was

concerned because but you're. right what can i see today i remain worried it's not the last round of brakes in negotiations that are starting this week we have other runs in late september and in october i went to london again last week so these are difficult negotiations because the british want the best of 2 worlds in a way here to do more good. the u.k.'s health minister insisted a deal was still achievable. the question is whether we can whether we can land. a future trade agreement and i'm confident that we can. johnson won reelection last december on a promise that he could build his way to break. a strategy that proved popular at home but may yet undermine britain standing abroad. let's get the latest on this story now we can bring in our correspondent scared

much as is standing by in brussels and math is in london good to see you both now bigotry that forced johnson on the one hand delivering an ultimatum and the financial times saying that the u.k. is planning to override parts of the brics that withdrawal agreements what is going on here. so one thing is for sure he's definitely trying to put more pressure on the european union to give in to some of the british to monster that he can have his breakthrough deal so he has done this in the policies imposed deadlines and then actually nothing happened so that might be just a form of posturing of maneuvering however what is more controversial and more provocative is his threat to have a new quite liberal interpretation of the withdrawal agreement and this i think is what makes people in brussels very worried and indeed also people here in the u.k. experts who are witnessing this they worry that the u.k.
4:12 pm
could be seen as somebody who's backtracking on the international treaties and with boys always always having said that global britain this what he wants he really needs these international needs an international reputation and so we'll really wait to see how this issue can be resolved between the british government and the you. are coming to you how worried are people are there in brussels i mean what does this mean at this point for the withdrawal deal. looks to me a lot of time money and effort has gone into reaching this withdrawal agreement here in brussels but also it in the u.k. so both invested in order to get this deal done and signed. so i don't really see how i you could now go back and change it all over again the crucial point is also that this deal has been a precondition for the talks that we have now and those are the talks about a future trade deal so it's not just about the legality off the international
4:13 pm
treaty that has been signed but it's also about trust and trust is something the u.k. will need in order to reach a deal not only with the european union but also with other members other states around the world if they want to hammer out other free trade deals it doesn't appear like there's a lot of trust on both sides right now i mean very good is the british government really preparing for a no deal scenario is that where we're heading well it could look like it is if you just look at these facts i mean many people are wondering if there is really a willingness in the british government to really come to a deal however there are also those who say boris johnson really does need to deal he's dealing with the economic consequences of the covert crisis and that really to pile on top of that a catastrophic no deal gregson that really wouldn't look very good and it would give an opportunity to the labor party to the opposition to really paint this
4:14 pm
government as as as a bunch of losers as basically incompetent and bars johnson himself as always said that it would be very easy to reach a trade deal so he will be measured and he will want to get a deal. and gary coming to you there in brussels if there is no deal at the end of all this will there be other small deals in no in order to keep things going. i would say the idea of you know the lower the no profile threat breck's if you want to call it like that the idea of partial deals fixing and replacing a strong trade deal relationship that has been shut down early in the game the brussels has been very clear what is on the table is for instance access to the internal market but at the conditions that all other member states half there won't be a sell out there will be cherry picking and so it will be either this or it will be no deal and today it was an offer on
4:15 pm
a line the head of the european commission was very clear we want a strong and close relationships but not at all cost otherwise it will be a no deal for exit right charismatics for us in brussels and a very good math in london thank you both. this week we are looking back to back at events.
