a challenge to lucas shango who's been in power for 26 years. a fresh show of determination and defiance thousands of women braved heavy security and an official warning to raise their voices against the government once more. they're demanding that president look at shank step down and that jailed opposition fakers be freed. after more than a month of protests this rally is just the latest evidence that the ruffians are not going to accept. those people get out of i don't know how many times i've been out here you just can't sit back and watch what's going on but if you don't come out today tomorrow your children will live as slaves and i'm a mother i how children. with previous demonstrations this one took a violent term shortly after the rally began scuffles broke out between protesters

and riot police in the capital's freedom square masked men could be seen aggressively confronting demonstrators ultimately making dozens of arrests. but they're grabbing everyone in sight do they think they can look at everybody or not the. president lukashenko says he has no intention of stepping down he's denied allegations of fraud in an election that saw him win 80 percent of the vote. but for lucien's are planning to keep up the pressure on the president on sunday tens of thousands of anti-government protesters are expected to flood the streets of minsk once more. in standing by for us in minsk connelly hello to you nic so we saw there more arrests and more violence this time targeting women who were demonstrating what's been the reaction in minsk to yesterday's events. well definitely anger if little shock i think
8:04 am
this had been factored in in recent days we've seen the police getting more aggressive and using more violent tactics towards women after a period where as you must remember there had been. the like to touch 2 was a protest as we've seen protests where women would stand in front of men who are protesting or journalists who are said to be arrested and preventing their arrest by standing between them the police that is now definitely over but interesting enough those those arrests came right at the beginning enough that 5 minutes of shock and confusion people the women out demonstrating did manage to get regrouped and spent the next 2 hours protesting walking through the city center getting their message and getting a whole lot of support from people on the streets clapping them keeping their homes i think example marie classic of a who was abducted here in minsk last week and who really successfully resisted the attempt by authorities to throw her out of her own country by ripping her jumping out of a car window that has definitely galvanized many here in minsk. this nic nic where
8:05 am
it does where do things go from see here i mean look as cinco is still refusing to meet with the opposition how does the opposition intend to proceed. that's the $1000000.00 question i think there's no clear answer to that this is unknown territory for a country which basically for a quarter century had no politics in which one man called all the big shots i think this is a kind of cultural protest now where protest spreads beyond the city streets beyond the sunday demonstrations i was in a residential district i mean just yesterday evening in a yard a building presidential building where there's been a mule of some d.j.'s who but he came up with the soundtrack to these protests that mural has been painted over time and time again by the authorities here and time and time again the people living there have replaced the mural but now the police is there 24 hours a day essentially guarding the rules prevent people from the place you are and the people who live in that yard are out talking to the police reaching every evening

drinking tea there was even an impromptu called 6 is the level to which the more the government clamps down the more they're actually forcing people closer to one another bring them closer and actually encouraging this come out to protest just out of out of a spirit of resistance to these attempts to really clamp down on their every day life and their surroundings. well more protests are planned for today so did yesterday's violence and not intimidate people are we expecting a large turnout today. will definitely that arrest of. a disappearance rather last week is definitely something that has angered and shocked many who thought they'd seen everything here so the streets where i'm standing now looks set to be tens if not hundreds of thousands of people today we've seen for the warnings from the government basically trying to make people think again about coming out reminding people to any station this guy demonstration is illegal and we have felt schools for them so far we've seen those threats aren't working. funnily

and journalist ali latif he is standing by for us in kabul hello to you ali so talks have finally started but the afghan government and the taliban have very different visions for the future of the country is there any room for compromise. this is what. everyone is going to wonder is that and i think this is why mike from a.o.l. was sent there the u.s. secretary of state to make sure that they come to some sort of an agreement because if you were following this process all of the preconditions to start these talks included the release of tall upon prisoners in the taliban releasing government prisoners and they all stalled they found different ways to stall the process along the way and it was only a couple weeks ago that the national security adviser of the united states called that afghan president and basically said you need to be sincere about this you need to move on this is taking too long and so pump alles position there is most likely
8:12 am
to do that to ensure that these groups actually sit down and come up with some compromise as much as he said the political system the future is up to you his presence is not there by accident. well what about the people of afghanistan and what do they make of the negotiations are they hopeful that this will lead them out of decades of war. what everyone and i want to see on wants is peace nobody is saying that there is an alternative to peace because there really isn't. and what they're hoping is that these is that the taliban and these political representatives put their personal interests aside and really actually start to think about the people because you have to remember that it's been 4 decades of violence here and it's you know the civilians that are constantly paying the price i mean the city of kabul is increasingly insecure their roadside bombs their sticky bombs all over the city the provinces are less and less secure than
8:13 am
they've ever been services are not reaching people so to a lot of people this idea of maintaining the republic doesn't entirely even matter because they never had access to you know education to health to roads to electricity to things like that so what matters most is peace and you know can they have peace and also retain their rights at the same time these are the kinds of questions that need to be asked you know was it just an absence of war or is an absence of war also with with rights and even the chance for transitional justice all right journalist reporting from kabul thank you so much in few. all right turning now to sports news and tennis gnomeo soccer has beaten victoria azarenka in the women's final of the u.s. open in new york and belarus and veteran as a rank dominated the 1st set 61 but then the japanese youngster
