this is date of the news line from the u.s. supreme court could be about to get a further push to the right donald trump announces a federal judge any coney's barrett to the country's top force if the republican controlled senate confirms her it could ensure a conservative bloc on the court for decades to come also coming out africa confounds predictions and avoids the worst effects of the ground of ours pandemic the continent fares better than the industrialized world and we'll find out why. and in fairness take a football out for our block horns with dortmund on saturday in

a david versus goliath match. i'm rebecca ritter's welcome to the program u.s. president donald trump has nominated a conservative federal judge amy kearney barrett to succeed supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg an outspoken voice on the court's liberal side who died earlier this month and have confirmed by the republican controlled senate trump will have put 3 of the 9 justices on the top court possibly handing conservatives long sought wins over contentious legal issues such as abortion and gun rights. it wasn't a surprise decision but that didn't make it any less significant i loved and i studied and you are very eminently qualified for this job you are going to be fair cares to thank you. president trump moved quickly after the death of ruth bader

ginsburg aiming to secure his supreme court appointment before the election the stakes for our country are incredibly high. that the supreme court will issue in the coming years will decide the survival of our 2nd amendment or religious liberty or public safety and so much more his pick amy barrett saying she plans to follow the constitution as it was written. judges are not policy makers and they must be resolute and setting aside any policy views they might hold. but it is a soap described devout catholic and has strong support in the conservative community where they hope she will influence laws on health care gun rights and abortion. i think it's a big win for christians and it's a big step to take we're taking that next step forward in abolishing abortion.

this must be a happy day for barrett but she now faces a bruising journey ahead to officially secure the nomination thanks i'm sure it'll be extremely non-controversial we said that the last time didn't weigh. all have to front talked of public hearings in the republican controlled senate where democrats are we doing everything they can to slow the process down thanks. to. strong. this nomination it will be decided by a simple majority vote which republicans will win if they stick together barrett will now spend the next few days meeting with senators hoping to secure their vote and making her the youngest supreme court justice. on this contentious nomination

i'm joined by stacy bivins hi stacy thanks for coming in what do you make of this announcement do you think barrett has done enough to win over liberals convincing them that she's going to stand on their own and not just play up to the republicans wishes well i think that she did what she had to do in the sense that she presented herself well was very interesting with her 7 children and her husband there. but short answer question no i don't think i think the she did she said the right things about are the. and the legacy that she had but at the end of the day she's more in line with justice antonin scalia who she clerked for somebody who's very conservative somebody who's very little of the law when it comes to interpreting the constitution based on the 18th century framework of what so it's not very modernizing their current. law what do you think our impact would be almost supreme court if she is in fact appointed well she would drive it more conservatively and
8:05 am
this is what conservative earth are happy about the balance would be 6 to 3 the one conservative justice who kind of is a swing voter he would no longer be so important so they would have the votes that they need to to do things like maybe overturn roe v wade and get rid of reproductive rights be harder on immigration and really the affordable healthcare act because that's coming up soon so. that's the a bomb ok actually yes many millions of americans health care yeah yeah still quite conceptions in the us it is people with with preexisting conditions could lose their health care and the thing is with this candidate with this she's very bright and she's very experienced however her writings and judgments on ac and the way she talked about justice roberts and how he as the conservative helped propel a poll that she was very critical and so democrats are very concerned about what
8:06 am
she will do if she is confirmed or to give an indication of which way she might vote on that all right so what happens now how will the confirmation proceed and what cards to democrats actually have to play still if any they don't really have any right that that's the reality what they can do is they could try to slow down the process with procedural things or as people are talking about they could try to use this as a moment to try to educate americans about why it's so important to get joe biden in the office according to them so they could really hit on the affordable health care act because that's going to come up on the docket a week after the election so this is something that tangible that democrats can use in order to say you might not love joe biden but look at your health care you're not going to have it anymore you're going to have to get to the polls and vote so that's what they're hoping to do now of course this supreme court appointment is is really contentious because happening just weeks before the election despite the

fact that in 26 thing republicans argue that such an important decision should wait what but you know when the democrats are in the same position in 26 thing and the republicans really went out and said no and you hear our voices if we've this happens again next time we will definitely stand by the fact that this should be happening by the new president yes what how is that impacting what is already a contentious election well. the how. right and i think that you know that senate majority leader mitch mcconnell was saying that if it was on the other foot you would do it too and this is different from 2016 because the republicans have have all of have the majority of the white house and congress so it's ok when obama was president he didn't have that so it's ok that we're pushing ahead with this it's it's a it's a crocker say you know her i was a fascinating to we could talk for hours we don't have time for you haven't spent very much. it's the turn now to some of the other stories making news around the
