debate questions ranged from coronavirus on the economy race relations and violence in the u.s. but the answers often devolved into i agree exchanges and personal insults that use the word smart. so you said you went to delaware state but you forgot the name of your college even go to delaware state you graduated either the lowest or almost the lowest in your class don't ever use the word smart with me don't ever use that word give me because you know what there's nothing smart about you joe we're going to get the final word low it's hard to get any word in with this clown excuse me just let me stay. for more i'm joined here in the studio by dint of these stacey bivins good to see you stacey it. was really much of a debate i mean we solved almost civil cut there from the debate it was more like
8:03 am
a shouting match most of the time did we learn anything it was just really messy very distracting and it managed to thread the needle between being extremely boring at some points and then just being really stressful for the viewer and other points but i think that was part of the strategy for donald trump because he's had a tough week with his taxes coming out and with the coronavirus and the fallout with the economy with the crown of virus so i think that his strategy was to try to keep joe biden office so it's like keep them off center and to distract him from from the issues and confuse the rest of us course the pandemic is foremost in everyone's mind right now getting up behind as joe biden was trying to press donald trump on his handling of the pandemic but the president definitely pushed back let's take a listen. you know you could never have done the job that we did you don't have it in your block you could have never done that you know i know how to do the job i know how to get a job where you don't do very well in sworn in h one

n one you were a disaster your own short sales 40000 people died not 200000 there was no their economic recession or you may have regarding letter words no you made a point there was no one no we didn't shut down the economy this is his economy species shut down. saying biden couldn't have done what he did to protect americans in this pandemic but so did biden say he what of what he would have done differently in handling the coronavirus him only fail focused on the fact that they're one of the people and that he would have made sure that that would have happened that there had been enough funding for small businesses so that so many would have gone under and then there would have been enough money to open up schools because it's expensive to keep them in line with the c.d.c. guidelines but one of the points that he did get in was it says here it
8:05 am
was it is what it was because you are who you are and that's talking about donald trump when he got to the 200000 number and donald trump there his hands up with a well it is what it is so joe but joe biden was able to point out that this was chumps economy and this was his handling of the chrono virus that has impacted so many americans of the baby also touched on i mean such a lot of issues but including racial tensions and beilenson the u.s. here's one exchange on the court say almost everything i see is from the left wing not from the right you know what do you want to do or do you say i'm willing to do anything i want to. do it sir. you want to call him what he want to call him give me a name give me a white surprise us and like me can die proud process on right proud of our lives stand back and stand by but i'll tell you what i'll tell you what somebody has got to do something about anti for and the left because this is not a right as we were i'm his soul is our levee our direct this is

a lesson we've got about writes about his mistress and teachers an idea not an organization you got it not to listen that's what. i have p.r. director said well then you know now that we're not we're done sir harry moving on to the next i've learned that i secured his generation had an idea there. very contentious issue there not just for the candidates for the united states as a whole reflecting those tensions how did the 2 candidates or the president and his challenger approach the issue of race in this debate will have to say that is disappointing that a sitting u.s. president can't outright condemn white supremacy and he refused yet again when he had the opportunity to do so and he also didn't focus on why people were protesting in the 1st place and it's racial injustice and we have people of various economic backgrounds ethnicities men women different ages all marching because they see an injustice and you can't tell people like my white brother in law who is
8:07 am
a teacher who's marching for the rights of his 2 black sons that there's something wrong with him that he's a man a member of and he for donald trump also double down on this idea that. he is the president of red states so the way he was talking about the democratic governors and how they handle things he focuses mostly on the red states and he fails to understand or care that he's the president of of all the united states and that's an issue refusal to condemn just distance himself from white supremacy and condemn them one of the main takeaways from this debate i would say politics is incredibly polarized in the united states right now do you think that undecided voters watching this debate will have been swayed either way by what they heard i mean this was pretty bad right this was a horrible worst ever see but i will say that if you were donald trump supporter before you were still at our top supporter you felt like his tactics were
8:08 am
good and that he he showed how weak joe biden was and if you're joe biden supporter you're still a joe biden supporter and you feel like he was thoughtful and that's what you want to see in a president the the amount of people who are still undecided is so small and i think that those people probably have an idea. who they would vote for they just needed to have a little bit of a push to force them to go outside of their homes to the polls and vote many are saying this is joe biden's election to lose he is ahead in the polls right now and many were hoping you wouldn't trip up too badly last night which many say he did not but it would trump him biden will face off 2 more times in televised presidential debates before the election which is just a little more than a month away. and we expect much of the same you think we'll see anything different let's hope it's not the same that this was really horrible but what i will say is that one of the upcoming debates is a town hall and that's where joe biden usually seems to shine because he's able to

connect with people and let's just see what happens because donald trump is having so many problems now in the press with his taxes and so forth so let's see if he brings forth a different strategy this time around so you see them thank you so much for your analysis d.w. stacey bevan's thank you. german chancellor angela merkel has announced a new measures in response to local spikes in covert 19 infection rates she vowed to avoid a full national lockdown instead announcing what she called a hotspot strategy after a meeting with the leaders of germany 16 federal states merican met with german state leaders for 3 hours to address disagreements about whether measures to curb the spread of coronavirus should be ratcheted up the outcome they will be. if you get out and visit often we've learned a lot we got through this summer pretty well but we know that more difficult times lie ahead in the fall and winter months in the middle of the busy man we are seeing
