you could never have done the job that we did you don't have it in your blood you could have never done that yeah i know how to do the job i know how to get the job where you don't do very well in swine flu h one n one you were a disaster your own chief or it stands out in disaster t.v. 1000 people died not 200000 there were no their economic last session or you made i regard a letter as no or just made a point but i now and there was no one no we didn't shut down the economy this is his economy and speed he shut down any attempt at meaningful debate was spoiled by cross talk. to the scientists that are insured the way they will have the vaccine very says. that it was not going to get the final word mellow it's hard to get any word in with this clown excuse me this at one point the exasperated moderator ton teacher scolding donald trump i think that the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions i am appealing to you sir to do that perhaps the moment that will live longest in the news reels was when trump

to claim the invitation to condemn white nationalist groups than you give me a name give me a white supremacist unlikely to conduct out process on right proud of my knowledge stand back and stand by but i'll tell you what i'll tell you what somebody has got to do something about anti fair and the left because this is not a right as we know of them is else is a levy. it kept on an edifying spectacle and which donald trump people over his policy blindspots and his competitor to biden papered over his each the pair managed in this view of formalization t. he was the consensus where no one went to us. and let's get some analysis on the debate now we have to use international editor richard walker with us here in our studio hi richard you could say it wasn't really much of a debate there was a lot of interrupting a lot of mudslinging a lot of insults as well what do you think we actually learned from the debate yes
1:05 pm
i mean it wasn't really the most illuminating debate was it and i think joe biden after after the 1st section even even said that himself i think what we have learned from this is on the one hand we've seen their debate strategies how are they going to position themselves in these debates each candidate and what kind of a strategy they're going to pursue and i think it's fairly clearly on the biden side it's to play the kind of the reasonable guy the reasonable alternative to donald trump and to portray him as extreme. and on donald trump's side is to try to wrong foot joe biden every opportunity hence all of the interruptions. and i think they you kind of see revealed in the strategy that each of them to some extent wants to make this a referendum on the other you know neither of them unnecessarily playing on their own strengths they want to reveal the weaknesses of the of the candidates so i thought that was quite interesting and we'll see if they continue to pursue that i
1:06 pm
would imagine they will in the in the coming debates. and then i think the other point is that i would pick up on is on this whole issue of the result it was the last thing within the debate where the moderator asked both kind of the scene will you your supporters if there's not a clear result on debate night which is quite likely really will you words them to the calm and will you respect the result once it has been certified do you promise to accept that result. and from joe biden was very clear answer of yes from donald trump there really wasn't such a clear answer and he even said things like it's a rigged election. this is not going to end well and that it could be months before we know the result and i would pick up on that and say if he's talking about potentially months of uncertainty that's a hint that he might even be interested in trying to stay on beyond or inauguration
1:07 pm
day or thought about the voters here because politics is so tribal right now in the u.s. do you think they might be swayed by what they saw yeah well it's true i think one figure i saw is that only about 14 percent of voters are undecided at this stage so a lot of people have made up their minds when we think about you know will these strategies of appeal to them the strategies we just mentioned well on the one hand what does joe biden want to do he wants to portray donald trump as essentially too divisive too chaotic donald trump wants to portray joe biden as too old so that's what he's trying to do with these interruptions and trying to wrong foot him he's trying to play into this idea that joe biden is too old. to kind of force biden into these situations where his stuff it comes through he's unable to completely stay on message with joe biden i think he was most effective where he was just
1:08 pm
trying to stay calm and not responding to those attacks. i think on either side i think it's hard to say that there's really a clear winner like whether those undecided 14 percent you know some of them will be thinking yes joe biden did seem old times some of them will be thinking donald trump did see totally chaotic a non-presidential so i think it's too early to say how that will come through right our chief international editor richard walker thank you for your analysis. well what's the reaction here in germany again to the 1st presidential debate we asked and very authentic a member of the committee on foreign affairs and i wonder father for chancellor c.d.u. party. what we've seen. unfolding the last night also means i think that we should be prepared for the democratic process in the united states and for the democratic institutions to be tested to the maximum in terms of the resilience of the what we increasingly hear is that one of the candidates seems not to be prepared to accept
1:09 pm
a defeat in a democratic election that. is the highly vora sum in terms of what it means for what happens after december after november search i fear that institutional set up of the united states will be tested to the limit. to recall the historic quote by benjamin franklin we have a republic if we if you can keep it. clearly if that were to happen this is also dramatic consequences for the standing of the united states closely and as a measure ally of. germany of the european partner so we look at that was a lot of. exile but we also have a lot of trust in the ability of the american people to make the right decisions in their own responsibility in a in order to democratic process but it will come up to the institutions to protect that maybe ultimately to the supreme court to the chief justice. unfortunate in the
1:10 pm
party of our prime winkel and roll reagan of george w. bush and john mccain has largely failed in being safeguards to what is going on but we have a lot of trust in the in the viability and resilience of the institutions of american democracy but they may be tested to the limit and brass neck a member of the committee on foreign affairs in the bundestag joining us there. let's take a look now at some other stories making news around the world belgium has a new government after almost a year and a half of negotiations the flemish liberal leader and former finance minister aleksandr to crewe will lead the 7 party coalition as prime minister in 2010 post-election wrangling left belgium without a government for more than 500 days the world record. more than 16000000 people in india may have been infected by the corona virus 10 times more than the official figure that's according to a nationwide study by the country's leading biomedical research agency it shows a far greater proportion of the population had anti-bodies than previous survey

azerbaijan with every means available the un is calling for an immediate cease fire but leaders on both sides have brushed off the suggestion of peace talks. this man's heart of it has been shelled beyond recognition. it now resembles a number of other civilian homes in the disputed nagorno-karabakh region. everything's broken well what else can i say. officially the separatist region lies within as a by shun but it has been under the control of ethnic armenian forces backed by the amenia and government since 1994 fighting has now also spread well beyond the borders of the contested xyron like in this bordering town in gaza by shown and is threatening to spill into an all out war. despite the growing death toll both military and civilian neither are mania nor azerbaijan appears ready to take steps

towards pace or to build new york area hard to talk about negotiations when specific military operations are underway. monday night is especially concerned about the alleged involvement of turkey which it claims has begun aiding its ally as i've shown. there is no evidence of turkey's involvement in the conflict and there is no such name in the azerbaijani army is sufficiently prepared to ensure the protection of its people and its territory we will not. both sides have accused the other of initiating the latest hostilities attacking civilian targets and obstructing negotiations the clashes have continued into a full day despite internet. kohls 1st ceasefire. french president emanuel macron is planning to hold discussions with both russia and the u.s. on ways to end the conflict. meanwhile both armenia and azerbaijan continue to see

this citizens queue to unloosed in the military and join the battlefield. chance on america is warning of tough months to come during the winter ahead and says the people of germany need to prepare in order to avoid a 2nd nationwide coronavirus lock down she made those comments during the annual budget debate in parliament michael defended her handling of the crisis so far rejecting criticism from the far right opposition a.f.d. that the government used the pandemic as a pretext to spend taxpayers' money but michael acknowledged the difficulty of coping with coronavirus restrictions but said that it is too soon to ease up completely this one time you didn't begin with on the woman what i miss most is the spontaneity in encounters with other people. that's the way it is and i think we all want that spontaneity that naturalness back we all want in life as we knew it back especially our country's young people. but we are currently putting everything
1:15 pm
that we have achieved in the past few months at risk. we must not allow a nation wide restrictions high economic and emotional losses again. we cannot allow a dying person in a hospital or nursing home to die all alone because their loved ones aren't allowed to hold their hand to say goodbye. i'm speaking here because i want to do everything i can to prevent another nationwide shutdown. let's bring in our chief political editor michelle or because now she's at the german bundestag for us. so is germany like other e.u. countries moving closer towards a full lockdown scenario again. well it isn't for now but certainly there are more nuts and bolts in place is a common agreement on when more measures are needed at this particular moment is the threshold of $35.00 infections per 100000 people per week so
1:16 pm
there's now a so-called hot spot formula in place that was agreed upon yesterday and now we're here to day in and usually emotional speech appeal to germans to keep that discipline to be patient and to prepare for worst times to come once again this autumn once again vowing that she wants to avoid a nationwide shutdown but it's by no means being ruled out despite the fact that is in terms of infection rates and deaths doing so much better seems to be pretty much an exception within the european union for now well germany is halfway through its 6 month european union presidency as well on the agenda there also is being dominated by the pandemic what did she have to say about that. yes she's determined to take the lead in making this a european issue also an international issue but there she sees this as the moment
1:17 pm
for the european union to actually pull together she herself of course has done that policy turnaround where she after a decades long resistance from germany suddenly allowed the european union to take on joint bet so it's the closest germany's come to so called a euro born scenario so far that says have a listen to what she specifically had to say on europe the america we noticed information was the case before the pandemic but that has intensified with the pandemic that multilateral cooperation is under considerable pressure in many areas . we hadn't experienced such pressure in recent decades this changes the world and if you look at history a pandemic like this kind tends to find such a development and that's why i think it's very important that we resist the tendencies towards renationalisation and protectionism. so it's a tool of that has nothing to do with being able to be sovereign on certain matters
1:18 pm
of i'm with my but over all we have to push for joint collaboration with force you can and we also understand in this to a certain extent aggressive world that we're faced with. the e.u. member state we can achieve little alone. so maybe they say it is europe's our. hero. so a pledge there for you have to stick together and the absence of her mentioning the u.s. let alone us president donald trump quite clearly that's where she sees the risk for that multilateralism that she is so calling e.u. leaders but also internationally leaders to act upon and worrying times as she maps out both geopolitically but also specifically and regional regionally through the corona crisis our chief political editor michelle of the bundestag for us thank you

well as we heard there chancellor merkel has unveiled what she's calling a hot spot strategy after a meeting with the leaders of the country's 16 states the new steps come amid a rise in case numbers here we visited a major clinic in berlin to find out how they've coped so far. uno teagle had just started working here at the helios clinic in berlin and the curve on our virus pandemic reached germany a young assistant doctor is still impressed by just how quickly the hospital reacted last match. we reallocated parts of our central surgery room to be used as a new intensive care unit within 24 hours that's a lot of. parallel to this entire coronavirus treatment centers were set up in berlin equipment was scarse and management was worried there were not enough then to late as many hospitals had to improvise the 1st wave of
1:20 pm
infection also had the helio's clinic by surprise. reason from the cup of tea tape as far as testing capacities are concerned in terms of musts and protective clothing we are prepared because we know where and when to hospitalized patients we can make quick diagnoses and quick decisions. everyone who arrives at the hospital is tested for coronavirus before they are admitted and patients are strictly separated those who test negative go to the green ward those who test positive go to the red ward suspected cases too they get a ward pull no teagle feels this system is safe. if not what you haven't seen a single case of patients infecting stuff since the matches when the she hated now treating coronavirus patients has become a routine one upper 3rd of the rest of the hospital is back to business as usual
1:21 pm
the nursing staff has returned to taking care of patients who aren't infected with coronavirus and i have to be we have returned to our usual activities and the employees are relieved to be able to get back to that every day work the applause heard from german balconies has quieted down people seem to have forgotten how important their work is. in there. was no pay rise or any token of appreciation for the nursing staff. that so many coronavirus deniers are taking to the streets these days is something nasa's and doctors can't understand you tube you need some people say i've never seen corona so i don't believe in it i've never seen electricity but i don't put my finger in the socket we've seen corona here we've seen deaths here. has seen the effects of the corona virus firsthand but he knows that his hospital is well prepared for what the pandemic might bring.

now a majority of e.u. member states have approved a new rule of law tool aimed at sanctioning states that defy the block's democratic principles and values poland and hungary opposed the rule of law checks hungary's government has come under scrutiny for its increasingly authoritarian methods but many also have their eye on poland because of its treatment of the l g b t community. pictures like these are the reason why bart starship ski is getting death threats. he puts up the sign of the entrance to tell me that a so-called l.g. b t free zones shining a spotlight on the difficulties gay people face in poland. the situation they laugh or we are not showing off or we are in the closet where we are at our house not showing that we are scared of being beaten i am scared of being. scared that somebody will wait for me in front of my house almost 100 local governments have

declared themselves free of l g b t ideology these declarations are not legally binding. but rights groups say they fuel homophobia even outside the zones counter protesters have repeatedly attacked members of the our g.b.t. community as you can see here. i have seen do you know if it of this fake is. right we are spreading. that it's not just live it's the people who are trying start on to us. poland's ruling and justice party is behind much of the anti-gay rhetoric it claims to be protecting traditional family values here we have to defend ourselves against this l g b t people their way of life is the road to perdition it leads to the dismantling of basic social structures in which the family plays the most fundamental role.

the european union has condemned poland's treatment of its bt community i want to be crystal clear l g b t q i have 3 zones i assure manatee 3 zones and i have no place and hours union in july and the e.u. commission rejected grants to 6 polish towns that had so-called l g b t free zones. but barge wants to see more concrete action. so i expect that the european union obey not the union of empty wars but something more. that the people. there drinking it until that equality becomes a reality in bud's country he will continue his fight against homophobia. to sports now and in tennis arena williams has been forced to withdraw from the

as often time did very well they kept things very tight so we didn't have the same punch that we usually have but we have to move on from that game and concentrate on dortmund unlike every other match desperate to win it is yours and of 2 for just given the good news for byron is that dortmund also surprisingly lost on saturday going down to no lets out. a young dog one team showed their inexperience at times and could have wily captain michael roy's back in the line up against diane. dozens of sonata months and 171819 years of age the fact they don't play at their best every week is normal we have to have patience and we have to find the right blend the coach must find the right mix we have total confidence for paul on top and of not won a trophy since lifting the super cup last year beating who else but by earn.
