entire city of more than $9000000.00 after detecting. coronavirus cluster authorities say only a handful of cases. have tested positive so far the latest live from china. and the confusion surrounding coronavirus rules here in germany restrictions change quickly and vary from place to place critics say there are too many different directives which make no sense. following terry martin good to have you with us u.s. president donald trump has held his 1st election rally since contracting cope at 19 trump flew to florida the 1st of 4 battleground states he's planning to visit over the next 4 days with just 3 weeks to go. until the election democratic candidate

joe biden is ahead in several national polls and is outspending his republican rival both contenders have held very different events in key swing states. back on the campaign trail 10 days after it was revealed he was positive for cove of 19 u.s. president donald trump headed to a rally in florida on monday a white house doctor announced that he had tested negative for the outdoor event in florida is the 1st of several stops kegel this week trump seemed confident patients across the country would get the same treatment he received and we've made tremendous progress if you look at what we're doing with therapeutics and frankly cures we've made tremendous progress and i said to my people we are going to take whatever they're oh they gave me and we're going to distribute it around our spittles and everyone is going to have this thing and. meanwhile
9:03 am
democratic nominee joe biden visited another battleground state after one of several socially distanced events across ohio he attacked trump's handling of the pandemic that's donald trump's presidency $250000.00 dead because of crude. experts say we're likely to lose another 200000 people in the next few months unless we take some serious action and he doesn't know what he's doing all because his presence only worried about one thing the stock market he refused to follow the science it's estimated we just warn is mass nationally we save over $100000.00 lives between now and the end of the year. biden has now headed to florida himself with election day just 3 weeks away both campaigns are in overdrive . well let's bring in d.-w. is william glue croft william trump seems to be in fighting form again with his
9:04 am
doctors saying and when trump says to the american people that i'm going to get the same treatment for you that i should they believe him well that's would be a difficult claim as as is the fact that he's negative his doctors did say before the florida event that he was negative but there's a lot of questions about exactly what kind of tests and how many tests and when the who the hows and wherefores of him being negative are still very much a matter of speculation there's thought that he was only getting these rapid tests which are far less reliable in a p.c.r. test that's a p.c.r. test that you need to show your negative to really claim and confirm that your negative and as far as the health insurance issue you know the united states has some nominal health care but it has terrible health access you know america has great hospitals and doctors and research and medicines and if everybody got the kind of care that donald trump was able to get sure coronavirus might not be such a big deal but if everybody in america was even theoretically able to have that
9:05 am
kind of health care access it would also crush the health care system because not everyone can have that kind of interval individual eyes attention and all the medicines he got some of which for experimental so it's really a far cry to look at the kind of care the president got the kind of care that average americans get right when as we see in the senate right now with these judiciary committee hearings the main issue with especially the democrats would bring up is health access and health care which is coming up to the supreme court that could be struck down as unconstitutional. trump is in florida has been in florida he's putting a lot of emphasis on that state he seems to feel he needs to win it how important is florida in this election i think anyone who follows presidential elections knows that florida is an important state an interesting state always causing some trouble for the campaigns we know the infamous case in 2000 what really came down to a few 100 votes in florida is a very important state 29 electoral votes often razor thin margins regardless of
9:06 am
who wins and that's because florida is a very diverse state you have a large jewish population of large l g b t 2 populations you have very rural conservative voters you have cuban vote a large cuban community and they tend to be the most conservative of latino voting groups so it's a very interesting diverse mix of people and that's what causes these razor thin margins but it should be noted that biden in a composite of polling is up $4.00 to $5.00 points in florida so regardless of the pictures that we saw there in the rally that might not be what many floridians are thinking so biden is looking pretty good and florida is looking pretty good over the whole country of course with some exceptions but overall biden has a strong lead over trump what does he need to do to keep it that's right biden is up nationally is up by about 10 points and many of the key swing states he's up anywhere from 5 to 10 points right now it looks very difficult how this doesn't stay as far as polling data goes doesn't stay in biden's favor by then would really
9:07 am
have to put his foot in his mouth which she does have a history of doing we should note but would really have to do something insane for these kinds of polls to really change back towards trump's favor but we should also note that these polls were also in hillary clinton's favor in 2016 and the probability is another another question a look at probability right now has trump excuse me as by then with about an 86 percent favor billy of winning this election which is better than hillary clinton that's a 16 when i was about a 7030 split between clinton and trump but we should by no means be calling the election 3 weeks before it actually happens 3 weeks is a long time and all of the 6 william gluco from our team covering the u.s. elections thanks so much. it's a look at some other stories making headlines around the world today the u.s. senate has opened hearings into the confirmation of president trump's supreme court nominee any kone barrett republicans are pushing to fill the vacant seat before next month's election if confirmed bare would reinforce the conservative tilt of

america's highest court. well asian opposition leader anwar ibrahim has met with the king in a bid to prove he has the support needed to oust prime minister we have seen last month the clarity he had the numbers in the parliament to form a new government the country has been in turmoil since the cult the government collapsed in february amid in 5. severe flash flooding in tembo dia has killed at least 10 people and forced thousands to evacuate seasonal rains and exasperated by tropical storms across the region thailand laos and vietnam have also been attacked . china is testing more than 9000000 residents in the city of chained after a small cluster of corona virus was detected there authorities say more than 3000000 samples have already been collected and of the more than 1000000 results so far received only 12 have come back positive china says it has been largely
9:09 am
coronavirus free since mid august with all reported cases coming from outside the country this latest outbreak has been linked to a hospital that had been treating imported cases. let's bring in correspondent ts berlinger he's in beijing for us good to see him it is the national health commission says that quote the whole city will be tested within 5 days we're talking $9000000.00 people how's that spose to happen. china has impressive testing capacities they have tested the whole city off one which had even slightly more people 11000000 not in 5 days but a few more what they do in these cases is they pool the samples and test them in batches and then if the whole batch is negative they can all be considered negative if that batch has one positive case then the whole batch will test positive and
9:10 am
they will have to retest these samples. that way they can do a lot of process a lot they will off course get a lot of assistance from laboratories all over the country. the fact that they have these singular outbreaks of course allows them to concentrate on these outbreaks and to get this testing done quickly and system that is paid in place in china where every household is registered to a committee also allows them to keep it pretty good track of who has already tested and who has knowledge. the new cases materials they come just days after china's golden week holiday when people travel across the country are chinese authorities keeping track of all those people. well chinese authorities collect a lot of data for example every train ticket every plane ticket and every night
9:11 am
spent in a hotel is registered in the police computers i don't know whether they are going to mobilize this data for for this purpose they also have these apps everywhere where you need to scan a code when you enter facility a restaurant or whatever shopping center and this app then theoretically registers you to that place and if there was somebody found positive one also visited that place they would theoretically be able to track you down now with these apps it's a bit more complicated because every province has their own and they're enforced sometimes more thoughtfully sometimes more leniently so i don't know whether these apps who do not really do geo tracking but only these registrations whether these apps will help them to find everybody who has potentially been in contact with these 12 cases or how many there will be turning out but there is a lot of data collection going on and tracking so far has really worked not to

mount in cases that we've seen before at least spreads were brought under control or outbreaks were brought under control quickly. but is thank you very much for bringing us up to date there that was material piling up in beijing. now to some of the other developments in the global health emergency u.s. drugs giant johnson and johnson is temporarily halting its coronavirus vaccine trial after participant fell ill the company is investigating whether the illness which it calls unexplained is related to the shot prime minister boris johnson has unveiled a new 3 tier system to combat rising infections in england regions will be listed in one of 3 co the alert levels and the world health organization says it is quote scientifically and ethically problematic to claim herd immunity could end the pandemic. well germany has so far weather the credit bias pandemic
9:13 am
better than many of its european neighbors but the number of new hotspots here in germany is increasing especially in the big cities politicians have brought in a range of new restrictions which often differ from one state to another critics complain that the rules are too confusing. 2 weeks of fall vacations are in full swing for many people across germany but travel will be difficult this year especially for those living in the country so-called corona virus risk areas. various areas have surpassed the threshold of 50 infections per 100000 residents over one week including german cities like berlin munich frankfurt and cologne. to try to stop the spread of the virus many german states have introduced travel restrictions for people who live in the risk areas in the states they can't stay in
9:14 am
hotels or guest houses unless they show a negative covert 19 tests no older than 48 hours or quarantine for 14 days but other states haven't imposed restrictions the picture is chaotic making it hard for people in germany to understand where they can travel to and under what conditions the federal government is the fending the measure but critics say the domestic travel restrictions won't help stop the pandemic and will put a strain on germany's testing system. in my opinion really a reasonable. measure because most travelers are no really infectious are low risk. of very important and very very p.c.r. terrorists in order to make sure that. it is also very burdensome for the travelers
9:15 am
and it is basically useless for controlling the penned in germany. the new restrictions have disrupted travel plans at a time when many families across the country normally go on vacation people are frustrated by the lack of clarity. on the one hand they think it's confusing for example i live in brandenburg and work in berlin and sometimes i wonder which rules apply where this always leads to some confusion and i would have liked more consistent rules i would prefer some uniform rules citizens would be more aware and maybe the rules would be communicated better. and if people understood the measures better maybe more would respect them. german chancellor angela merkel will meet with state leaders on wednesday as. it is i'm of the accommodation band grows they will try to bring some order to the chaos.
9:16 am
is chief political correspondent linda crane is following the story for us melinda germany was doing pretty well fighting the pandemic it was considered a good practice country is that still the case well germany's situation at the moment is certainly better than some of its neighbors but government authorities say that the situation here is very serious that the infection rate indicates that germany is at the beginning of a 2nd wave and that the current moment will be decisive and the juror and germany's chief vi rolla just its chief expert on corona said just a day or 2 ago that in fact he agrees that it's decisive and that this is the moment when we will see whether individuals behave responsibly enough for germany to preserve the advantages that in fact and the credit that it did build up in the springtime and we saw in our report there how is german state seems to have its own
9:17 am
rules it's causing a lot of confusion why is there not a more coherent approach in germany. germany is a deeply federal country it has a very very long history of federalism and therefore it is in fact legally up to the local states and authorities to impose and also lift rules regarding health and hygiene so certainly the states are within their legal rights here and the fact is that there are very very different situations in regard to the pandemic as between say big dense cities like grillin munich frankfurt cologne and far more rural regions for example in the northern part of the country sleighs we hold steiner at the state of mecklenburg for parliament and therefore exactly those states the more rural ones perhaps somewhat understandably want to try to prevent a spread out of the virus hotspots and that's where these travel restrictions are
9:18 am
coming from but as the report pointed out they are leading to frustration and consternation among those germans who had planned to travel domestically and therefore there will be a meeting tomorrow between the state leaders and the chancellor to see whether some consistency can be brought into the picture. europe as a whole is struggling with rising infection some countries are closing schools and restaurants could we seen could we soon see tougher measures here in germany to melinda. i think we're likely to see tougher measures in germany if we don't see infection rates come down pretty quickly certainly here in berlin the mayor has even warned of the possibility of a lockdown and there's also talk here and elsewhere for example in the netherlands of trying to create some form of the european system to pool intensive care beds because germany and this is one of the advantages is had has a relatively large number of intensive care beds whereas other neighboring

agent no vitriol the russian government sists it did not target the bali. the arctic ocean is dying that's the stern warning brought back by scientists who spent a year studying climate change in the region they made the journey aboard the german icebreaker the polish gathering of valuable data about the ocean ice and atmosphere around the north pole. the last few yards of the most complex north pole expedition ever after a year in the arctic the german research ship pull l'arche to end is coming home a special moment for the woman in charge of the alfred figure institute. do you see my tears of joy i am so happy that our ship is back home and when i saw it again after such a long time i thought we are so lucky that everyone has arrived home safely. last

fall the polar stand froze on to an ice floe and drifted across the arctic at a speed of about 12 kilometers a day propelled by the isis movement on ocean currents the crew came from 20 different nations and worked throughout the darkness of the arctic winter in temperatures that sunk as low as minus 40 degrees celsius one danger throughout the trip was hungry polar bears nonetheless they successfully gathered the information necessary to learn more about climate change. the expedition paid off i am thoroughly satisfied with the results we have pushed the limits of polar research we returned with a treasure trove of data and samples from the arctic that will have a long term effect on science the expedition ran up a bill of 140000000 euros but it's not over yet for the scientists who are on board it will take them years to analyze the data and samples that were collected on the polish town. now to south america it's one of the wonders of the world much of

picchu in peru and one man has managed to secure a private tour after a very long wait jesse tuckey arrived in peru in march and planned to spend just a few days there to see the famous ruins but he's been stuck in the country for 7 months because of the credible iris and he site has been closed due to the pandemic cruise government agreed to let him see the park before he returns to his native japan he said it was an amazing experience. well here in europe there's a growing backlash against sexism in advertising last year the u.k. banned commercials which include gender stereotypes paris has its own law against sexist ads as do several german cities one of the driving forces behind the campaign is the protest organization pink stinks.
9:25 am
do we really still have to talk about this sexism in advertising about the fact that women are objectified to sell everything from pizza to beer to cars to whatever. one person who is battling the way women are represented in advertising is gender researcher dr steve. meant in fact that he can decide i ask myself how it's possible that we're allowed to have the advertising that so backwards in terms of gender while the state of spending money to bridge the wage gap between men and women who's responsible for that stand here and it annoyed me so much that i thought we have to have a public debate about it. so show me the took action and organize the 1st worldwide demonstration against sex isn't an advertising she gave up her university career and founded the german branch of the organization pink stinks. that kind of. tank is a. a color of course and often little boys like it but they're quickly told that
9:26 am
pink is not for them and there's a lot of sexism is not just because he is and then we have the problem that women don't stand up for themselves because they're not allowed to be aggressive they should be pink fluffy and sweet was a lot they're not raised to have tough jobs in business then you take a job they'd like or otherwise assert themselves but i think you've got to have one as he sounds be doing. pink stinks is pushing for a change in consciousness not just among the media and advertising agencies but also within the german government completely approached the advertising council quite aggressively has petitions and campaigns we were also very vocal in the press and this is how we got the attention of the federal government they've supported us for years with the study as well as monitoring advertising national radio and money tooling success to show battle companies are gradually realizing that taking a stand against sexism is good business as seen here in an ad for a german hardware store. was i.
