to. get enough to eat. u.s. intelligence officials accuse iran of trying to meddle in the upcoming election saying. voter registration details. behind threatening emails sent to american voters. hello i'm terry martin and welcome to the program for the 1st time since the start of the pandemic daily infections here in germany have exceeded 11000 cases per day the southern state is one of the worst hit regions of the country the area around back to scotland has already gone into law down on monday and the regional government in munich says it may introduce a 9 pm curfew is. infection rates continue to rise elsewhere in the state.
11:02 am
here in berlin germany's public health body robert call institute is appealing to the public to follow the rules on social distancing hygiene and mask wearing inspiration is to talk to and the situation is now very serious. so the number of infections is rising quickly in many places we could and we don't know where that number is headed what we can still slow the spread. everyone can play their part. we're not powerless you can trust if we follow all of those rules. well joining us for more is our political correspondent hans von tons put this into perspective for us how serious is the situation in germany. well you just heard the government the government's infection control head talking about how serious the
11:03 am
situation is very serious he says to put this a little bit into perspective 4 weeks ago uncle americal said in the press conference that she expected the number of cases per day to rise to somewhere around $19000.00 by christmas if nothing was done and now we are at over $11000.00 and that's just 4 weeks ago. so it's just been it's almost 2 months to christmas in other words it's going much much faster than i'm going to medical thought at the time and at the time one thought she was being alarmist so the situation really is very serious at the same time one has to say that although the virus is spreading all over germany there is not yet a sense of having lost control of panic in the countries. control of the of the virus at the same time the appeals to the public to stick to the rules to restrict social contacts to have just small groups in which people means to stay
11:04 am
away from large gatherings these appeals are increasing and are increasing in intensity and in seriousness hun's is germany's health system prepared to cope with this how are things looking in the hospitals. at the moment one has to say the hospitals are not yet under strain there are a box just something like 950 people in intensive care with covered 9000 at the moment about half of them being. treated on the respect in other words are very serious cases but one has to say this is a situation that the number of cases in hospital reflects really the number of infections 3 to 4 years a weeks ago because obviously somebody gets infected going to takes about a week for that person to get symptoms and it takes a week or 2 for that person to get serious sometimes and go to hospital so what's happening in hospital at the moment reflects the situation 3 or 4 weeks ago at the moment they are still followers of babes in intensive care available in german

hospitals but if the number of infections increases at the rate that it has been then that will be exhausted pretty quickly within the next 2 or 3 weeks thank you very much for bringing us up to date there d.w. political correspondent hans plant. and here's a quick look at a few other developments in the pandemic ireland is locking down for a 2nd time the 1st european country to do so non-essential businesses will close and bars and restaurants will be limited to take away services the lockdown has planned for 6 weeks infections in the czech republic continue to rise steeply with just under 15000 new cases the country has seen a 2nd daily record high and astra zeneca in oxford university say they're back scene trial will continue despite the death of a ball and tear in brazil regulators say there are new concerns about the safety of the brazilian trials. now to thailand where the government has rolled back an

emergency decree banning protests in the capital bangkok it had been put into place in a murder in an effort to cool anti-government demonstrations that have been going on for weeks but the measures failed to discourage tens of thousands of demonstrators from turning out for daily protests around major bangkok intersections demonstrators are demanding that the time are demanding the thai premiers resignation and reforms to the monarchy. well for more let's bring in philip sure well from bangkok he's the asia correspondent for the french newspaper the sunday times thanks for being with us philip the protesters say lifting the state of emergency is not enough what sort of concessions are they looking for from the government yeah i mean this is a question significant backed down by the by the prime minister he has repealed this old it just a week after it was introduced to try and and these protests and every government
11:07 am
move to try and crackdown is only for the galvanized protests but the basic demands are unchanged and they were that the fullest degree was put in place that demanding the resignation of the prime minister's government which they say was came to power in an unfair and rigged election last year that demanding a major overhaul of the constitution that was drafted under the previous ruling junk. which kind of governs how politics is run in this country and most contentiously that calling for reforms to their own family all those demands that there will be some post last night just as are on the streets again and they held at the johnson. resignation letter which that the prime minister general prayuth which we stay read out in the invited him to sign it ok so the demands are clear dozens of protesters including leaders of the movement were arrested earlier during the crackdown what's likely to become of them. yeah and it's interesting i met
11:08 am
last night the young female protester who read out that resignation letter as they call it fully prime minister she was subsequently arrested in a cafe a couple of hours later around midnight those leaders many of them are now released on bail some of those who made the most explosive demands about their own family are still being held they will face possibly question a long and complicated legal process and given that the government here has failed to clamp down on the protester either riot police all through the decree it may be that this sort of war of attrition through the course of trying to prosecute these leaders will be the next move but the have on protesters who've taken a lead from hong kong on this have said you're only does now this is a leaderless protest you can arrest certain high profile figures but you're not going to be able to wrestle on that is not going to end up protests a part of the demonstrations are focusing on the royal family and that's really unprecedented in thailand what what if anything are we hearing from the royal
