hit what happened what to the president say he said don't worry it's going to go away begun by easter don't worry quorum whether they'll worry maybe inject belief he said he was kidding when he said that a lot of people thought it was serious a whole range of things the president said even today he thinks we are in control we're about to lose 200000 more people present the perhaps just to finish this i was kidding on that but just to finish this one eye closed he said i shouldn't have closed and that went on for months at one eye closed he said this is a terrible thing it is then a phobic i think he called me a racist even and because i was closing it to china now he says i should have close it earlier it just it doesn't i didn't say either of those things you certainly. did i talked about his in a phobia in a different context that wasn't about closing the border to chinese coming to the united states are our washington correspondent. was following that debate and she

joins us now from washington symbol of very different atmosphere to the 1st debate which candidate do you think came out on top this time. terry good morning to you you know i think i go out on the limb and say perhaps we the viewers came out on top this time because we actually got to see a debate you know some of the changes that were made in advance of the format of this debate the muting of the mikes for example really served us the viewers and voters really well and the moderator got to cover a lot of ground cover a lot of topics i mean the candidates also covered a lot of topics they got to actually spar on a number of questions that are important to voters now the consensus here is that president trump certainly delivered a far better performance than in the 1st debate he was far more disciplined he was able to stay on point on a number of policy issues it was far less combative and republicans here really are saying this is the president that they were hoping for and waiting for in that 1st debate and they were glad that he showed up this time that joe biden's campaign and

his supporters are saying that he also delivered a very strong performance particularly on the covert 19 pandemic but also on those more moral and ethical questions the question of bringing decency back into the white house and they believe that he really scored a big win on some of those topics i have to say that we did see both candidates issue some a half truths and some false statements that made it more difficult for viewers and that is something that fact checkers are catching up on now because of the campaign managers are probably happy with their candidates do you think voters will have a clearer picture of the candidates visions for the country after this debate. well i think what voters got here was a reinforced view of what the visions of both these candidates are and that hasn't really changed much from the previous month so for example on covert 19 we saw the president sticking to his perspective that the country is turning the corner of the

country is on the up that places and states that are seeing outbreaks are tamping down those outbreaks again and that a vaccine is imminent now joe biden also sticking to his perspective perspective which is namely that the president has mismanaged this crisis that. more than 220000 americans have died and more will die and he said that the president has as not been responsible in this crisis and that he would have a plan to keep americans safe here and that those were where they were on covert 19 on foreign policy what we saw was that president trump said he would tell it where you tell it it rather has more on orthodox policy there for example is relationship to kim jong il and of north korea joe biden they're saying clearly well kim jong un is a thug so if we were looking for daylight between the 2 candidates on policy we really saw that they are night and day in the way that they see where the country is right now and where the country is headed ok what do you think is this debate likely to actually influence the outcome of the election. well terry i think
8:07 am
that's pretty hard to imagine at this point i mean there really aren't that many undecided voters so voters who are on the fence i saw a number today saying that between 2 and 8 percent of voters are still undecided so there really aren't that many minds to change at this point what do you think that both candidates and campaigns can say is that there are candidates delivered good strong performances but i don't think either candidate can say that they came out of this being able to change the outcome of the election so we thank you very much steve washington correspondent for now so let's count them. germany has recorded more than 11000 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours for the 2nd day in a row the surge in corona virus cases here is mirrored in other countries across europe with many countries reaching new highs in a section writes faced with the spiraling crisis governments around the continent or tightening restrictions and imposing new law or report begins in france.
