becomes the 3rd arab state to set aside hostilities with israel in recent months the leaders of both countries have a green to normalize relations in an deal brokered by the u.s. president but palestinians feel the track. i'm jarred rate welcome to the program germany has passed the warring mile starn in the corona virus pandemic a total of more than $10000.00 people have now died from covert 19 in germany this follows a shop rise in cases in recent weeks a new record in daily new infections has also been set in the past 24 hours with more than 14000 cases reported. a grim milestone painful for every family it has touched germany has become the 6th european country to

reach 10000 cobe in 1000 deaths. after a peak in mid april the daily death toll was much lower over the summer for most of july august and september corona deaths in any 24 hour period were in single figures in the last 2 weeks the mortality rate has begun to rise sharply but there are hopes it may not return to the level it reached earlier this year we have very high death toll in the springtime especially for the elderly and now we have more rate is higher in the younger population and that explains why they were telling us you read is lower because younger people do not succumb 19 they usually get sick sometimes also very severe is severely sick however the usually do not die compared with some other countries fewer people in germany have died from the disease the number of deaths per 1000000 of population is 120 neighboring france are seen more

than 4 times their death rate meanwhile china and india have reported much lower numbers of fatalities by head of population those figures show germany may have dealt well with the virus so far but infections are also rising again more steeply than deaths and experts are increasingly concerned as they look towards the coming months. we don't know how the inspection situation will develop we have to assume that the number of serious cases will increase and that the number of deaths will also rise. if that assumption proves correct many more funerals will have to be held under the shadow of covert 19. well joining me here is our political correspondent hans profound welcome to hans what are the implications of germany passing this milestone of 10000 deaths well of course you can say that the figure of 10000 in some sense is abra 3 but it is a 5 digit figure and it's the 1st time germany has reached it it's simply another

warning to the german population and to the german authorities that this pandemic is still there is increasing in impact again that the number of cases is increasing and as we've just heard from one of the experts what is likely is that the number of deaths is also going to increase and increase more quickly again because a number of infections is rising so quickly so it is a warring situation authorities are more focused on a local level in targeting cases does this mean that a nationwide lockdown probably isn't on the way in germany that's something that the authorities are doing everything possible to try and avoid a nationwide locked on is absolutely the measure of last resort in germany so what is happening in fact at the moment is that one is trying to target particular areas where the infection rate is particularly high most prominent at the moment is a section of bavaria in southern germany which has in fact imposed a local locked on already and these kind of measures are likely to happen in other

areas in germany as the number of infections increase ok we know that germany in the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic was largely spared from the scenes that we've seen elsewhere in europe but now we are seeing a shop increase why is that. well this is the question that everyone's been asking all over the world in some sense i think in germany too you had the situation there during the summer time here in the northern hemisphere. people were becoming more relaxed they were outside the infection outside are much less likely to happen and this kind of relaxation extended into this autumn period full period where people are more inside again having parties inside having sort of brushes and start going into bars and pubs and clubs and as a result of this lack of care i think on the part of the population the number of infections has increased drastically ok our political correspondent on thank you.

let's turn now to spain which has the 6 highest number of covert 1000 cases in the world but spanish prime minister will sanchez warn that the real number of those infected with the virus might be 3 times as high as the official figures show now the 2nd wave is putting massive pressure on spain's hospital care with a 3rd of intensive care units already field with that 19 patients the government wants to avoid a new lock down but he's not opposed to a national curfew that would require the declaration of a state of emergency which sanchez has not yet called. let's go straight to madrid now and speak to journalist guy hedgecoe there hi guy how close do you think the spanish government is to declaring a state of emergency. well the feeling is that it's very close indeed we are expecting the government hold a cabinet meeting this weekend probably tomorrow and certainly that will be
9:07 am
a possibility that will be on the table the pederast such as a declaration a new states of emergency and that follows requests from several regional governments over the last couple of days for this state of emergency to be introduced to allow them to have some kind of legal framework which would allow them to introduce restrictions particularly on movement and on social contact now it's the northern regions of the country in particular which are being hard hit by the 2nd wave at the moment catalonia the basque country. as well all those regions have requested this state's emergency so it looks very likely that we could see that being announced by the central government in the coming days why do you think spain has struggled so much to deal with the 2nd wave of the pandemic. well this is what people been asking constantly here in spain why you know why is spain had now over a 1000000 infections the 1st european country to hit that particular mark and why
9:08 am
is it had more than 30000 deaths there is a feeling that's often not very strict lockdown but the country hats in the spring which did appear to work that things were rather too relaxed off there was that the regional authorities in particular allowed people to try and go back to some kind of normality perhaps too fast there was a lot of movement over the summer people travelling within the space between regions and those so there was a loss of contagion between different areas of the country there's a feeling that that may have been a problem and also perhaps that the authorities didn't take advantage enough all of that time when infections were low in order to suit reinforce the health casts and to prepare for a 2nd wave which everyone seems to be expecting to arrive at some point in the autumn a guy how to spaniards feel as they faced a fresh round of restrictions i mean you mentioned that they had this lockdown then they got more relaxed now they face tougher restrictions how do they feel about.
9:09 am
well you know obviously that frustrates you know it was such a tough lock down earlier in the year they don't want to go back into that i think you know the restrictions we're looking at the restrictions which are in place at the moment which i will likely to be introduced in the coming days or weeks are probably not going to be as strict as that lockdown we saw earlier in the year but nonetheless it is very frustrating but when you talk to people in the street they seem to be quite divided about this many people seem to think that it's a good idea to have much tougher restrictions and to try and knock this on the head the 2nd wave which is this thing dragging on and on and getting worse and other people are very worried about the economy for example you know we're told that the economy is like that dip by 13 percent over the course of this yet people earning bala's and restaurants for example of being really hard hit so there's a concern there and i think people around the divided about whether it's a good idea or not to introduce tougher restrictions dana very concerning situation
